I was on a four country business trip, Indonesia being the fourth, and aside from a brewpub in Singapore, hadn't had any beer that caught my attention until I tried Bintang. I had it from a bottle and poured it into a pilsner glass. The look was classica plisner golden, the smell slightly hoppy, as expected, but the taste a bit more complex than the other regional beers I had (Tiger, Singah, San Miguel). All were drinkable, but this one had a bit more hop character than the rest. It didn't make me think I had been transported to the Czech Republic, but it did comfort me with the knowledge that I would be ok beer-wise while in Jakarta.

The colour is medium yellow with a tint of god. The high head sinks down to a thick lid with a fizzing sound. No lacing.

The smell is malty with sweet notes of barley and wheat dough. Some anonymous bitterness and quite a lot of alcohol. Maybe a hint of honey, too.

The taste is a bit sweet, somewhat malty flavour of French loaf, rice and sweet exotic fruits. Some mild anonymous bitter flavours that grows a bit. The aftertaste brings a mild dry bitterness, some hints of peppermint and hints of alcohol.

The carbonation is very refreshing and quite strong, but as the liquid is very smooth, the carbonation isn't sharp in any way.

In fact, this is one of the most refreshing beers I have had in a long time!

After my merry-go-round from Belgian Tripels, to handfuls of IPA/DIPAs from upstate NY to California, then German Weisse's and British Ale's, I found myself craving the standard. An idiot I hold close to my heart once told me: "Sometimes you just gotta have McDonalds, you know?"

How pretentious for me to say, and of course this is no Micky Ds, but for your basic adjunct lager/pilsner, this will do. I came across this easy-going gem on a trip to Bali, Indonesia, and was pleasantly surprised by how it filled exactly what I needed in that kind of humid, tropical weather; paired with local flavors, ofc (Babi guling!). Good fizz and fair amounts of malt. Very light beer that pours a lighter shade.

A decent brew for a country that is mostly non-drinker. Bintang is alright for the hot nights in the jungle or everyelses you are in the country. There is a bit of bitterness, and its very easy to drink. anyway you can not really complain about the beer cause, with the Guinness thats the only one you can find here. So you enjoy it!!

Appearance: Clear, light golden colored brew. Very pale. Weak looking, fizzy white head.

Smell: Sharp pine aroma, hints of butter, light malt in the background.

Taste: Very mild hop flavor with a limited malt profile. Very clean with no standout flavors.

Mouthfeel: Light body. Crisp and slightly acidic finish.

Drinkablity: A simple brew, pretty refreshing and light. Good for a hot day in the tropics.

Visited Indonesia 3 times over the past several years. This is the beer of choice while relaxing on the beach or a jungle hut. Just standard and boring, yet it's good when travelling in Indonesia.

Bottle of 330 ml, bought in the Netherlands where it's imported. ABV 4,7%. Ingredients are water, malts, sucrose, barley and hops.

Pours a golden yellow colour, with two fingers of soapy white head, good retention. No lacing left behind. Lots of activity in the glass.

My nose is a bit blocked, but I only get an aroma of your typical pilsner, meaning some light hops smell along with some malts
NIce crisp taste, refreshing, very light bitterness on the finish. Quite malty.I thou Nothing really exciting, but quite good nevertheless.

Medium thin body and average carbonation.

Overall not bad. Highly drinkable, although not really a pilsner but closer to a lager.

Having lived in Bali for 5 years, I have drunk a LOT of Bintang!

"Pilsner"? yeah right! It's an average lager, best served chilled, VERY often skunked due to the realities of storage conditions in tropical Indonesia. It's loosely modelled on Heineken (see the big red star on the label?) and does actually have a faint malty taste with discernable bitterness if you get an unspoiled one.

Bintang is no world beater, but sitting on Kuta beach at sunset, nursing sunburn and listening to a local band butchering a Bob Marley classic, there's nothing better!

Well, this is an pretty average international lager. Interesting to try something from Indonesia.

Aroma is weak but there are some typical hop and malt tones with a weak undertone of citrus.

Tastes pretty good, nothing special but ok'. Some nice tones of hops, freshly baked bread. A bit hoppier than expected actually.

Tried this one to some "thai-food", worked out pretty well.

Indonesia did Pilsner/American Adjuct Lagers proud with Bintang. The beer is very drinable and quite smooth. It is interesting that this website lists it as a AAL, when the label infers a pilsner. Either way it is a pretty good beer. The appearance is good...nice golden clear with plenty of carbonation which helps to forms the foamy white head. The smell is ok...well balanced between the grain/malt/hops used. The taste is very smooth....hints of grain and malt help to balance the beer. Bintang is very easy to drink and certainly could put a few away....without issue.

Bottle at Pelangi, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is crystal clear yellow in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high head that has good retention properties and only died down a bit.
S: Light to moderate aromas of adjunct malts are present in the nose-corn stands out in particular.
T: Like the smell, the taste is a little sweet and has flavors of corn and adjunct malts along with a very slight amount of bitterness from the hops.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little smooth on the palate and has a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is easy to drink but isn't very flavorful and seems a little bland.

A crystal clear mid gold insipid looking beer , with very low level of carbonation.
Flat , metallic macro lager smell that is not very enticing.
The flavour is rounded smooth and sweet. There is little variety and little bitterness. What is there is pleasant but is uncomplicated .
Despite the watery smell it is a thickish oily mouthfeel.
This is a hot day quaffing beer. Better than some and worse than many.If I was in Indonesia (highly unlikely0 then I would be happy enough to be drinking this but not excited by it

indonesian treasure. when you spend a week or two on a boat lookin for waves, this pilsner type ice cold (dingin selkali!) brew gets the job done. sessionable all day after a long session, a little bobby marley in the juke and a slab of bintang happening, perfect. the setting makes the beer in this case, average to lousy product served up with indonesian spirit. will never turn one of these down because theres a good chance it means amphetimines and cheap sex. rock on

This beer's label states it's "Best served with friends" but I lament to be drinking it by myself. Does that mean it's not at its best?? Perhaps if others were drinking it with me its score would increase. Maybe not though.

I was not wowed by this beer's looks...although no words come to mind--so perhaps I am wowed.

Nice malt presence in the mouth, giving it a Czech-style flair. Scant hops, clean finish. A pretty boring taste all in all though.

The carbonation is pretty good, which is my favorite part of this drink--sharp on the tongue with a nice, soft fizzling-out sensation in the throat. I would give it an above-average drinkability as well. The Bali Hai, also from Indonesia, was a much better brew I thought.

Had a Bintang at a Thai restaurant in Kyoto, Japan. It wasn't a very busy restaurant and so the beer may sit on the shelf for a while there...or maybe it's just not very good.

A - Not much head on a pale yellow body.
S - Light banana
T - Light banana, hops. Not much else and just not much flavor period.
M - Quick fizzy carbonation which dies relatively quickly, and then nothing else.
D - Smooth after that initial fizzy attack. But this is a bland kind of smoothness and that's no good.

Golden colour with white head.

Somewhat skunky smell with malt aromas.

Pleasant mild taste with flowers and fruit.

Mouthfeel is a little bland and would have benefited from a heavier carbonation.

As for drinkability, though it may not be able to compete with the best German pilseners the Bintang for sure beats most Swedish macro lagers.

A - Fairly clear golden colour with a couple of centimetres of white head that falls away rather quickly.
S - A grainy, light fruity sort of smell.
T - Like the smell but with some slight honey sweet notes.
M - Fairly light bodied with a medium to high carbonation.
D - Pretty boring, lackluster beer. Like others have said it would probably do the trick on hot bali nights when you have no other choice but here, in normal circumstances there are many, many better choices.

Appearance - 2.5
Poured a finger of bubbly, white head, that steadily reduced to almost nothing. The colour is a pale gold and looks quite still.

Smell - 2.0
A strong skunkiness was evident upon opening, but this reduced appreciably with time. Vague whiff of malt and grain, perhaps a whisper of hops. Very weak.

Taste - 2.5
There is certainly more taste than some other macro beers out there, and it is not a bad taste either. Still, you wouldn't call this strong. It is sweet upfront, which turns to a grainy flavour, and there is very little hop characteristics in the finish. Aftertaste is almost non-existant Not too bad, but way off for the style.

Mouthfeel - 2.5
Carbonation is low, and the beer goes down quite easily. Weight in the mouth is light to moderate. A little too flat for the style.

Drinkability - 3.5
This would be very sessionable on hot Bali nights, but otherwise not great.

In a way, this beer is lucky to score this highly from me, as it is way off for its style (almost no hops!) and has very little charater. It gets by by being easy to drink, and not offensive in any way. If I am in Bali again, I will most likely drink some more, but it would be stupid to pay import prices for what is really a very ordinary beer. ABV is 4.8% by the way.

Format: a standard green 330mL bottle with a pretty ordinary macro label.

Appearance: pours out a pretty nasty yellow colour with a very thin white head that dissipates almost immediately.

Aroma: a very weak aroma of cheap grains and adjuncts with some florals or vegetal notes.

Taste: again very weak with cheap adjuncts. A nasty fug is evident -which turns out to be vegetal rather than the floral - however is still very light so doesn't impact too much.

Aftertaste: the flavours drop away pretty quickly per the style. Just a throw-down, cheap macro lager.

Mouth feel: quite light in body which comes across as watery. The carbonation somehow is chunky and yet makes the beer feel a bit flat.

Overall: an okay throw-back lager but that's about it. It has been designed for the hottest of hot weather where flavour is not as important as refreshment. You can still find better for under AU$40 a case though.

330ml bottle poured into pint glass 18/3/14

A pale yellow with lots of big bubbles feeding a finger of foam that's gone in seconds and leaves several patches of random lace

S sweet grains, cardboard, floral hops are faint but there, not skunked but has a chemical thing going on that doesn't work that well, smells like a corona or something similar

T doesn't stray far from the smell, not overly offensive but not exactly pleasant to drink, tastes like cardboard

M thin and watery, bubbles foam it up and its flat in seconds, vegetal aftertaste leaves something to be desired

O not quite awful but undesirable, tastes like so many other crappy warm climate macro lagers I'd pass if given a second chance

I didn't buy this one because I thought it would be good I bought it for the country tic. One of those beers that you could drink on a hot beach if you had to but I'm not on a hot beach in Indo

A - Like clear apple juice, with a thin sheet of head fading to a ring within seconds.

S - Weak floral notes with sweet corn.

T - Faint grass, green apple and white grapes. Very mild and pretty uninteresting.

M - Clean thin body with moderate carbonation.

O - Shouldn't be drunk anywhere but Bali. It does bring happy holiday memories though.

330 ml can, a gift from my Indonesian-born sister-in-law. ABV is 5%. Pale yellow colour, decent head. Typical "Industrial" and sweetish pale lager aroma, notes of maize and/or other adjuncts. The flavour is far too sweet for a "pilsener", but there is at least a certain maltiness and not too many off-flavours. Very moderate hops in the finish, slightly metallic.
