Poured a deep dark chocolate brown with a sticky 1/2 finger deep tannish colored head that left pretty quickly.Somewhat sweet aromas with caramel dipped fruit and chocolate notes mainly sticking out, roast is there but not real strong.Lighter bodied for the style with dark fruit and unsweetened but not really bitter chocolate flavors, roast creeps as I drank more.More of a sweeter version of the style in my mind,a little light but not all that bad,but for the price I could do better.

poured from an 11 oz. bottle into a pint glass.
A - dark brown with a reddish color coming through where it's thin around the edges of the glass.
S - a nice roasted aroma with some chocolate coming through.
T - roasted coffee with some caramel and chocolate.
M - some tight carbonation but easy on the tongue.
D - this is a very drinkable stout. not as robust as some others, but it has a surprisingly high 7% abv. I definitely enjoyed it and will look forward to picking up some more of these soon.

Poured a rich black with a thin tan cap of head that quickly receded. Not the best looking stout around, more head would be nice, though the chilled glass it was served to me in may be partly to blame. Scents of roast malt, black coffee, hints of dark chocolate and a very faint metallic aroma. A nice, traditional stout aroma. Taste begins with a large roast malt presence, mingled with dark cocoa powder and bittersweet chocolate with a slight sweetness underlying the roasted and bitter flavors. Roasted malt and bittersweet chocolate dominate the middle of the sip. Finish is heavy on roasted malt flavors, with some black coffee present as well. Aftertaste is rich roast malt. A good, solid stout flavor profile that hits the style notes quite nicely. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a smooth, semi-dry feel. Quite drinkable and very nice. Overall this is a pretty good stout, fitting into the higher ABV classic stout or perhaps the export stout niche quite nicely. A good surprise from Japan.

Poured from a bottle into a small pint glass at my favorite sushi place.
A - Deep chocolate brown color with hints of red. Small tan head went away quickly
S - Coffee and burnt sugar dominate, with some sweetness underneath
T - Here the bitter/coffee roasted malt flavor takes over, leaving little room for anything else. The sweetness is there somewhere, and the hops, but I found it very one dimensional
M - lighter than I expected, more like a brown ale than a stout
O - When rice lagers are so synonymous with Japanese brewing, it was novel to try their take on a stout. I'd have to say they did a decent job, but it's not going to replace any of my American or European favorites.

Poured from a tall-neck 330mL bottle into my Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.
Very dark, near-bistre body, yet actully transparent when held to a very strong light. Faint rufous highlights, neither brown nor red. Light tan soapy head which recedes to a heavy collar and fine slick fed by a continuous stream of micro-bubbles.
Roast malt, light-roast coffee, chicory, brown bread, and a touch of rye in the nose.
Moderately sweet, grainy, toasty palate entry with a bit of cheap coffee and cocoa as well. No real hops though there is a faint bitterness. Richly malty, well roasted but not burnt. Clean finish.
Spritzy and not-quite-light-bodied mouthfeel.
Simple but well crafted. More of a Foreign Export Stout (or even a dark lager) flavor-wise, but it works on those terms.

Japanese Premium Import Echigo Stout, by Echigo Beer Co., ltd., of Niigata, Japan. Purchased here in Seattle at Uwajimaya.
330mL longneck poured into pint glass. Beer is nearly pitch black, with just a hint of red, and a thin brown head. Aroma betrays alcohol and roasty malt -- was this oaked?
The barley blackened by roasting. Surprising level of carbonation, and a heavy but watery rather than creamy mouthfeel. Strong, but not as much alcohol on the palate as in the nose. Pretty good and deep if not particularly complex.

poured smoothly with very little head.
aroma had hints of caramel, malts and coffee. the taste on the tongue was very bubbly , but not over bearing. Definitely not a typical stout feel almost like a pilsner feel. The flavor was pleasant, not overpowering or over bitter but eventually smoothed out at the end.

Dark brown stout borderline black, gives off a nice chocolate brown hue, with tan bubbles.
The bouquet is kind of weak, with faint malt, and a light mixed nuts quality. Taste improves with a slight chewy light smoke and tobacco, but also of store bought pre ground coffee. There is strangely next to no finish on this beer.
A strange mouthfeel with a small abv content that seems wet but masked easily. Wet but strangely drinkable and easy.

Bottle at Samurai Mama, Brooklyn, NY
A: The beer is close to being jet black but has a very dark amber appearance when held up to the light. It poured with a few bubbles on the surface and a thin ring around the edge of the glass.
S: There are faint aromas of dark roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell, but has stronger flavors of dark roasted malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a little dryness in the finish.
O: The beer is extremely easy to drink for the style and is a nice pairing with udon noodles.

There was something very old-school about this beer that reminded me of when American brewers first started pushing the boundaries of the English concept of stout- amping up the roasted malt aspect and adding more hops, but before the more Americanized style took form, back when we talked about "robust porters" and "American-style stout." The roasted malt flavor of this beer is big and full of caramel and brown sugar, with the barest hint of soy sauce - not enough to put the beer off, more like a dab of Samuel Adams Triple Bock had been added. Not the best example of this style, but I liked it nonetheless.

Clear very dark brown colored beer with a perfectly sized light brown head. Could be darker but the head is great.
Smell is banana, chocolate, coffee, and some faint almond scent. Patent malt scent but not all that strong, there is wheat toast aroma here.
The taste starts out sweet and malty with a good chocolate flavor. Good chocolate this is very much a chocolate beer and it tastes like a milk stout. Gets a bit more bitter about half way through the glass.
Mouthfeel is OK.
Very good drinkability tastes like a milk stout. If you want a highly burned beer though this isn't it.

Had one of these in cask conditioned form at Popeyes while on vacation in Japan. It was very smooth, if a little light in flavor.
A - Dark brown body.
S - Hardly any scent.
T - Light chocolatey flavor. Tastes more like a nutbrown almost.
M - Flavor softly spreads over the tongue. Nothing intense here. Very smooth in the mouth.
D - Very smooth drink. Goes down the throat very easily. Good light stout. Didn't notice the apparently high ABV at all.

Echigo 'Stout' @ 7.0% , served from a 330 ml bottle purchased for $5.25
A-pour is almost black from bottle to glass with some ruby red peeking out along the glass edge , with a small tan head that is quickly dissapating leaving a minimal lace ring along the pint
S-sweet & boozey , hint of smoke
T-smokey , not that big of an imperial stout , more 'RIS' perhaps , lots of chocolate in a slight bitter finish
MF-ok/good carbonation , full bodied ,
Ov-ok beer , decent imperial stout
