look: 4.5 | smell: 3.5 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Appearance - Pours near black with cola brown highlights where light can penetrate. The head is the color of cocoa powder and peaks at 2 fingers thick. Great retention leads to a thick layer of surface suds and a thick ring around the edge. Lacing coats the side of the glass in large spots and exhibits good stick.

Smell - Sweet malt with a roasted edge. Hints of chocolate and metallic earthiness.

Taste - More sweet than roasty. Malty grain sweetness with lesser notes of milk chocolate. Hints of coffee roast and caramel. Low leafy bitterness hits toward the finish, giving the brew a bittersweet aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Closer to medium in body with a moderate creamy texture and low carbonation. Bone dry finish.

Overall - Drinks more like a Euro Stout, like an Irish Dry, than an American Imperial. I'd recommend it just for the experience, but I'll likely pass on buying it again.

Poured from a 33cl bottle into a snifter. This pours a pitch black color with a large mocha colored head. The smells are a little of coco, dark roasted malts and alcohol. The feel is medium to thick. The taste is okay, not quite a RIS but still good, dark roasted malts, coco and a bit of hop bite.

A: Poured a dark red-brown, and clear (I know because it let enough light through to show me). The head was a half-finger of light brown foam; it might have been thicker if the waitress had been a little bit more aggressive with the pouring.

S: Heavily-toasted grain is the strongest aroma. I think I detect some tamarind or another fruit in the background as well.

T: Tangy burnt malts and sweet molasses are the first and foremost flavors. The taste becomes a little acrid with some late bitterness, but it doesn't linger long on the tongue. The flavors are enjoyable, but not complex.

M: Crisp, refreshing, and decently carbonated, but not as thick as I'd expect from a stout.

O: Is there such a thing as a "light imperial stout?" Although the flavors where there, the intensity was much closer to a middle-of-the-road porter. That's not to say it was bad -- it paired nicely with sushi without stealing the attention from the food. I'd order it again, but only at a Japanese restaurant; there are many better stouts to drink as stand-alones.

Blackish, dark-brown hue, with a tan, billowy head. Good lacing. Smell is sweet and permeating, notes of caramel and molassas.

The taste is wet and clean, highlighted by the soft and creamy mouthfeel. The slightly high, 7% alcohol, is hidden nicely by the excellent hop finish. The ending is a complex mix of sweet and bitter, like a high percentage cacao chocolate. Good stuff.

Both barley and wheat malt is utilized, which is pretty cool. Hops round out the ingredients list.

A - Medium foamy vanilla white head. Dark chocolate / red wine colored body. Very pretty. Would be nice to see some lacing.

S - Chocolate and caramel roasted malts smells. Its vaguely sweet. No hops or yeast that I could discern.

T - An initial tiny bit of hoppy bitterness with some roasted flavors. Very pleasant but generic. Easy enough to get a Guinness or whatever you have. This is a generic stout. Not bad but not great.

M - Some better-than-average for a Japanese micro body. Not watery. Its silky going down.

D - A good generic stout. A good average stout. A way to measure other stouts.

Poured from a can purchased for about 270 yen (maybe $3 with today's exchange rate) from a department store in Tokyo. The appearance is OK, dark brown and a little red color where the light shines through. There's a thin finely celled tan foam. The aroma is roasted malts, as is the majority of the flavor. There's a little sweetness in the after-taste which is nicer than a bitter roasted flavor. The mouthfeel is a little thicker than I expected, not bad at all.

Overall this is a good stout, not unlike many American microbrewery offerings (although not to be confused at all with a RIS or double stout). Not a bad beer to get while in the far east.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and cookie dough aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but smells a bit better in terms of stout characteristics.

Japanese Premium Import Echigo Stout, by Echigo Beer Co., ltd., of Niigata, Japan. Purchased here in Seattle at Uwajimaya.

330mL longneck poured into pint glass. Beer is nearly pitch black, with just a hint of red, and a thin brown head. Aroma betrays alcohol and roasty malt -- was this oaked?

The barley blackened by roasting. Surprising level of carbonation, and a heavy but watery rather than creamy mouthfeel. Strong, but not as much alcohol on the palate as in the nose. Pretty good and deep if not particularly complex.

Thought I would try something different, when I bought this bottle for $4.50
It poured a dark brown with creamydeep tan head , about one finger high. It leaves good lacing after dissipating.
Smell is of roasted malt, caramel ,coffee and brown sugar.
The taste is quite mellow, with the sweet brown sugar notes up front, little roasted malts in the middle , and some coffee at the end. The beer finishes too sweet for my taste. It is very drinkable, but is not your typical Stout.

Dark cola in colour. Little head to speak of, not much lacing. Slight chocolatey nose with some roasted malts in support. Bitterness is a little aggressive and body is a touch thin. Finishes OK but not very memorable. Not a bad beer, just ordinary is all.
