My first Japanese craft beer! 330 ml longneck bottle with a black and gold label of a ninja warrior and 3-sided ninja star. On to the beer:

The beer's apearance is as dark as the early twilight, not quite dark enough to be midnight black, with a good spongy head on top, but with average retention. Whiff of fruity esters in the form of alcohol and a dash of semi-sweet chocolate chips in the aroma. The taste is mellow, maybe too mellow. It's sweet like baking choclate with a subtle roasted edge. Hints of coffee are there too. Touch of astringent grain flashes towards the end.

No major complaints about the beer, but there's some room for improving the flavor's robustness. Chocolate ice cream sounds like something good to pair with this beer.

Poured a deep dark chocolate brown with a sticky 1/2 finger deep tannish colored head that left pretty quickly.Somewhat sweet aromas with caramel dipped fruit and chocolate notes mainly sticking out, roast is there but not real strong.Lighter bodied for the style with dark fruit and unsweetened but not really bitter chocolate flavors, roast creeps as I drank more.More of a sweeter version of the style in my mind,a little light but not all that bad,but for the price I could do better.

Bottle at Samurai Mama, Brooklyn, NY

A: The beer is close to being jet black but has a very dark amber appearance when held up to the light. It poured with a few bubbles on the surface and a thin ring around the edge of the glass.
S: There are faint aromas of dark roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is very similar to the smell, but has stronger flavors of dark roasted malts.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a bit watery on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a little dryness in the finish.
O: The beer is extremely easy to drink for the style and is a nice pairing with udon noodles.

Had one of these in cask conditioned form at Popeyes while on vacation in Japan. It was very smooth, if a little light in flavor.

A - Dark brown body.
S - Hardly any scent.
T - Light chocolatey flavor. Tastes more like a nutbrown almost.
M - Flavor softly spreads over the tongue. Nothing intense here. Very smooth in the mouth.
D - Very smooth drink. Goes down the throat very easily. Good light stout. Didn't notice the apparently high ABV at all.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass

A- Poured a dark brown/black color with a minuscule dark tan head that almost immediately disappeared. Seemingly very light bodied as the rising carbonation can be seen through the dark beer. Very lively - carbonated.

S- Welcoming smells of chocolate and burnt malt. Smells toasty but with no hop aroma at all. Surprisingly, a yeasty smell is obviously present.

T- Roasted and toasted. Yeast is flavors are present and actually compliment the toasted malt. Chocolate flavor is mild on the pallet and does not shine as much as expected. Light bodied. What does surprise the pallet is a pleasant smokiness. A descent spice note is also present.

M- Crisp and biting. Wasn't expecting this in a stout. Once again, this is light bodied for its style. Highly carbonated and a lively ale.

D- Very drinkable when referring to body but not what you might be expecting in a stout. Carbonation lasts until the last sip. Ribbons of CO2 bubbles continue to rise the whole time. Good beer out of Japan.

Echigo Stout

A nutty, deep brown color, decent sized froth but dies away quickly. Smells of brown sugar, nutty and a bit earthy. Taste follows suit with a light nutty maltyness and very faint roasted flavor. Tea like hop is barely percievable. Mouthfeel had a spritzy carbonation. Overall, a decent export stout.

Japanese Premium Import Echigo Stout, by Echigo Beer Co., ltd., of Niigata, Japan. Purchased here in Seattle at Uwajimaya.

330mL longneck poured into pint glass. Beer is nearly pitch black, with just a hint of red, and a thin brown head. Aroma betrays alcohol and roasty malt -- was this oaked?

The barley blackened by roasting. Surprising level of carbonation, and a heavy but watery rather than creamy mouthfeel. Strong, but not as much alcohol on the palate as in the nose. Pretty good and deep if not particularly complex.

Dark cola in colour. Little head to speak of, not much lacing. Slight chocolatey nose with some roasted malts in support. Bitterness is a little aggressive and body is a touch thin. Finishes OK but not very memorable. Not a bad beer, just ordinary is all.

Pours an opaque black with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy swaths of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and cookie dough aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but smells a bit better in terms of stout characteristics.

Thought I would try something different, when I bought this bottle for $4.50
It poured a dark brown with creamydeep tan head , about one finger high. It leaves good lacing after dissipating.
Smell is of roasted malt, caramel ,coffee and brown sugar.
The taste is quite mellow, with the sweet brown sugar notes up front, little roasted malts in the middle , and some coffee at the end. The beer finishes too sweet for my taste. It is very drinkable, but is not your typical Stout.

poured smoothly with very little head.
aroma had hints of caramel, malts and coffee. the taste on the tongue was very bubbly , but not over bearing. Definitely not a typical stout feel almost like a pilsner feel. The flavor was pleasant, not overpowering or over bitter but eventually smoothed out at the end.

A - Medium foamy vanilla white head. Dark chocolate / red wine colored body. Very pretty. Would be nice to see some lacing.

S - Chocolate and caramel roasted malts smells. Its vaguely sweet. No hops or yeast that I could discern.

T - An initial tiny bit of hoppy bitterness with some roasted flavors. Very pleasant but generic. Easy enough to get a Guinness or whatever you have. This is a generic stout. Not bad but not great.

M - Some better-than-average for a Japanese micro body. Not watery. Its silky going down.

D - A good generic stout. A good average stout. A way to measure other stouts.

Poured from a can purchased for about 270 yen (maybe $3 with today's exchange rate) from a department store in Tokyo. The appearance is OK, dark brown and a little red color where the light shines through. There's a thin finely celled tan foam. The aroma is roasted malts, as is the majority of the flavor. There's a little sweetness in the after-taste which is nicer than a bitter roasted flavor. The mouthfeel is a little thicker than I expected, not bad at all.

Overall this is a good stout, not unlike many American microbrewery offerings (although not to be confused at all with a RIS or double stout). Not a bad beer to get while in the far east.

Appearance is a very dark brown with minimal head and lace. Smell has roasted a nuttiness in the malt with a light chocolate note. Taste has again the roasted nuttiness with a twang and maybe a light burnt coffee note. Mouthfeel is a little light for a stout, but not bad. Overall it's actually better than I expected from this Japanese stout.

Blackish, dark-brown hue, with a tan, billowy head. Good lacing. Smell is sweet and permeating, notes of caramel and molassas.

The taste is wet and clean, highlighted by the soft and creamy mouthfeel. The slightly high, 7% alcohol, is hidden nicely by the excellent hop finish. The ending is a complex mix of sweet and bitter, like a high percentage cacao chocolate. Good stuff.

Both barley and wheat malt is utilized, which is pretty cool. Hops round out the ingredients list.

Poured from a 33cl bottle into a snifter. This pours a pitch black color with a large mocha colored head. The smells are a little of coco, dark roasted malts and alcohol. The feel is medium to thick. The taste is okay, not quite a RIS but still good, dark roasted malts, coco and a bit of hop bite.
