12 oz bottle, purchased from Nijiya Market in San Francisco. First time I'd ever seen it. Poured into a wine goblet.

Nice dark coffee appearance, although not as thick as most American stouts. Beige colored head, a bit on the thin side. A bit of lacing, but not much.

Aroma was barely there, especially for a stout. The barest hint of alcohol esters and toasted malt. I swirled and sniffed and swirled again, but I couldn't get this to open up. Maybe if I let it warm up or microwaved it.

Nice taste, though. Well balanced, alcohol hidden well. Smooth, mouthfeel less thick than other stouts, not as in-your-face as most American stouts, but tasty and enjoyable. High drinkable, goes well with food.

Pours with a frothy, initially finger and a half thick, lightly browned, dark tan colored head. The beer is a dark chocolate brown color that shows a brilliantly clear, reddish-black color when held up to the light. The aroma is malt focused with a nice balance of roast malt notes and sweet grain character. Aromas of dark chocolate, lightly burnt toast, a touch of carbonization, lots of toasty grain notes towards the finish (browned soda cracker notes and biscuit aromas) and a touch of roast grain huskiness is all noticeable.

Lightly sweet in the front and middle, but this is offset throughout (though especially in the finish) by a substantial roast character. A fair amount of carbonation adds a peppery bite to the middle of this brew and helps to cut through a light-medium fullness. The beer is definitely quite quaffable, despite the fullness from the caramelized / sweeter malt notes. The finish is dry and bitter from the burnt grain flavors; reminiscent of dark roasted, black coffee in both its burnt acidity and roasted flavors. This beer has flavors of burnt chocolate malt balls, aromatic darkly roasted coffee, darkly toasted bread crust and a burnt, dry, roast grain finish that is surprisingly smooth for all of its character.

Quite a tasty brew, I like how the straight forward & dominant roast notes are offset by caramelized grain notes just a touch. I did not really know what to expect here, but I am definitely pleasantly surprised none-the-less. I like the texture of this brew, it has a certain heft to it, but does not keep it from being quite quaffable. This is certainly not the most flavorful or aromatic of stouts, but the texture is nice and it is thoroughly enjoyable. This brew reminds me that I haven't had a decent regular strength stout in far too long. I definitely need to pick up a few more of those.

11.15 oz. bottle purchased at Hi-Time Cellars in Costa Mesa, CA. Served in an American 16 oz. pint glass/tumbler.

Appearance:
Dark reddish-brown color, but not opaque. Head is a dense, tan-colored finger of foam which shrinks to a thin ring of bubbles and then vanishes in a few minutes.

Smell:
Subtle aroma. Much closer to a good dunkles or even a doppelbock than a stout. Mostly caramel and sweet malt, with a slight yeasty sourness. Almost no roasty character, and no hops at all. Not a very stout-like stout at this point.

Taste:
Okay, yes, this is definitely a stout, and it's drier than the nose suggests. Plenty of roasted flavor here which reminds me of a canned espresso drink more than anything else. (Not a bad thing, really.) Slight burnt-caramel sweetness in the finish tempers a gentle acidity, like the citric note in good bittersweet chocolate. Extremely more-ish. A very genteel and soft-spoken beer that doesn't even hint at its 7% a.b.v. strength. All the flavors harmonize beautifully.

Mouthfeel:
Light-to-medium body. Silky texture. Low carbonation.

Drinkability:
The most perilously drinkable 7% stout I have ever encountered. Smooth, sophisticated and satisfying.

Coming in a 350ml can, BB 02/11/2007 and consumed just a week before this date~~ Served cool in Harvey's straight pint glass.

A: pours a very dark brown hue, topped with a huge beige creamy froth with superb retention; carbonation is light.
S: a light lager-sourness (as in Munich Dunkel), sticky caramel malts and Munich malts, Cascade peachy-fruity hops, and a rather light roastiness from burned barleys and walnuts all come together, backed by a sound bedrock of sour-sweet sticky dark fruitiness featuring dried red dates and raisins. Utterly enjoyable, complex and balanced, showing different layers of maltiness, fragrance of hops, etc.
T: a sour-bitter taste of roasted maltiness leads towards chocolates, roast nuts, then the light bitterness quickly manifests itself along with a sour tinge of roastiness; mildly chewy chocolate malts and roasted bitterness both linger in the aftertaste, where the palate is also entertained by the sour tinge as of fruits AND malts.
M&D: creamy-smooth in texture, very light in carbonation, showing no sign of alc. at all. This is a FULL-flavoured and med-bodied delicious and complex (esp. in aroma) stout that I couldn't have expected to enjoy from a can with a poor design like this! Highly recommended.

Had one of these in cask conditioned form at Popeyes while on vacation in Japan. It was very smooth, if a little light in flavor.

A - Dark brown body.
S - Hardly any scent.
T - Light chocolatey flavor. Tastes more like a nutbrown almost.
M - Flavor softly spreads over the tongue. Nothing intense here. Very smooth in the mouth.
D - Very smooth drink. Goes down the throat very easily. Good light stout. Didn't notice the apparently high ABV at all.

Appearance: Deep, dark, cola amber-black with a thick, quivering, gaseous cappuccino-colored head. Gorgeous.

Smell: Dark chocolate, anise, coffee, cola, loads of prunes, and a few drops each of vanilla extract, maple syrup, and soy sauce.

Taste: Very well balanced. Malty honey-like sweetness is nicely countered by a nice burnt edge, herbal/estery hop bitterness, and a grand finale of rich, bitter dark chocolate.

Mouthfeel: Somewhat thin bodied for the style, but the excellent carbonation inflates it into a soft, cushiony, mouth-fillingly chewy mass. Finish is quite clean despite the malts' viscosity.

Drinkability: This stout is simply good fun to drink by itself, and it's also very versatile with cheese. It worked wonders with my three-year cheddar, Dutch goat cheese, and of course, gruyere.

the nearest thing to a stout i've had in a long time is guinness... that's it. so this review is almost a comparison. but keep in mind that this review is of a japanese beer.

dark nearly black, reddish brown on the edge, nice big beige head that settles to a thin frothy layer. decent retention and lacing. the appearance is really on the fine line between above average and good.

wow, lots to smell. butterscotch coffee. some biting coffee bitterness but also some caramely malty sweetness. the smell is intriguing, but the taste is satisfying. after a sip, you just want another. feels nice and smooth, medium body, tasty and quite drinkable.

i do not taste a 7% abv here. echigo stout is really well-made, the ideal japanese beer to pair with cheese.

Poured in to a pint glass.

A very nice offering. If I am ever in Japan this will be a beer I will seek out.

Pours a nice dark brown. A decent frothy beige head with some lacing down the glass. Scents are nutty with chocolate, some mild coffee and anise. The scents are not over powering but blend nicely on the nose.

Flavors have a mild burnt quality to them. Some dark chocolate, a bit of coffee and a slight hazel nut to provide some sweetness. There is a mild bitter hop bite but the malts really take command. There is no alcohol burn. It is well hidden. The flavors control themselves and blend well together.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied. Nothing too heavy. Very smooth and enjoyable. It drinks easily and one could drink a few in a session. This stout would go well with a chocolate dessert in my opinion. A very well thought out stout.

This is apparently the standard by which all craft beer stouts in Japan are judged, and believe me this is an amazing beer.

Big fluffy tan head on a jet black body.
Chocolate and cola aroma.
Crazy complexity, burnt caramel, with super citrus and floral hoppyness. A dry european youth hostel coffee flavor (y'know, with the little grains in it).
Creamy long lasting bitterness.
The alcohol is seemless and perfectly balanced.

Blackish, dark-brown hue, with a tan, billowy head. Good lacing. Smell is sweet and permeating, notes of caramel and molassas.

The taste is wet and clean, highlighted by the soft and creamy mouthfeel. The slightly high, 7% alcohol, is hidden nicely by the excellent hop finish. The ending is a complex mix of sweet and bitter, like a high percentage cacao chocolate. Good stuff.

Both barley and wheat malt is utilized, which is pretty cool. Hops round out the ingredients list.

350ml can, brought over from Japan.
Appearance: nearly black color, with a big, bumpy, brown head. Spot on look for a good stout.
Aroma: very nice! Rich, delicious, redolent with complex combinations: cocoa, coffee, anise, raisins, sweet and toasty at once.
Marvelous texture, giving, rounded and warm. Malty as can be, with only a trace of bitterness, and a very resilient flavor. Tasty, to be sure, and a reward for the senses everytime the beer revisits the lips. I quite liked it!

330 mL brown glass bottle with a tabbed peel-off cap. Freshness date stamped on the label. Obtained at Popeye in Tokyo.

This stout poured a clear, dark mahogany brown color (almost opaque) with creamy, light brown foam that clung to the glass and left some lace. The smell was mild: malt, coffee, chocolate. The taste was sweet malt (coffee and chocolate) balanced with a mild bitterness (hops, chocolate malt). A nice flavor. The mouthfeel was smooth and creamy with medium-full body and moderate carbonation. There was a pleasant lingering dry chocolate and hop flavor. This was a drinkable and enjoyable stout.
