On tap at Glass House Shinagawa. Nice head with slight carmel color. A bit cloudy with a nice citrus hint followed by smooth bitter taste. I like it.

No telling the age on this, as it was on clearance.

Rambunctious pour yields a murky copper with a quarter inch frothy cream head that dissipates into a thin layer of foam.

Floral hops and bready, toasted caramel malt are evident immediately. Smells very sweet, and malt dominates.

Flavor isn't as sweet as anticipated, but bready, toasted, nutty malt opens the profile, followed by bitterness, floral hops, and caramel sweetness. The finish is fairly bitter and a bit tannic. Perfume surfaces in the aftertaste.

Body is on the rich side, with low carbonation and moderate alcohol warmth. There's astringency in the finish.

Certainly malt dominant, with harsh bitterness detracting from the experience. Floral hop notes are somewhat subtle. Bitterness is too prevalent.

Poured from the bottle a slightly hazy dark coper with one finger of of rich beige head.

Not sure of the age of this bottle but the aroma was very malty with molasses and vanilla. No hoppiness at all.

The taste was as malty as the aroma with the same molasses and vanilla notes.

Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation.

Not an IPA I could really get into with the solid maltiness and lack of hops. Maybe this one is a bit old.

On tap at Popeye's in Tokyo... although it turns out I could have bought some right here in the Atlanta area!

Appearance is copper, clear, with just a ring of off-white head. Nose is mild hops, not very strong, but not unpleasant.

Taste is nice citrus hops. Slightly perfumey/flowery. Some alcohol on the finish, and the hops linger slightly. Not much balance.

Mouthfeel is average for an IPA. Overall this is a decent IPA. Nothing amazing, but not bad.

Sherlock's Cook's Warehouse in Decatur, Ga USA $4.99 / 500mL

Poured up a lovely medium orange-brown colour. Slightly cloudy body with a fantastic looking, slightly off-white, soapy head; wonderful head retention.
Big, sweet malt in the nose with mild, herbal hops. Certainly not the IPA smell I'm used to. Smelled nice, but nothing like anything calling itself an IPA I've ever smelled. Very interesting.
Taste was much less hoppy than I was expecting. Largely sweet malts in the mouth, then finishing with some pleasant hop bitterness. Very nice, but again, completely unlike any IPA to which I am accustomed.
Mouthfeel is unbelievable on this! Pillowy soft, velvety smooth, like drinking satin! Quite possibly *the* smoothest beer I have ever drunk.
A rather bizarre "IPA", but a very good beer, for sure!

A - Poured out a clear, amber color with a one-finger, off-white head of foam. There was okay retention and minimal lace.

S - It smelled of hops - I couldn't identify which ones - just hoppy. Some citrus and caramel notes, too.

T - The flavor is a nice blend of spicy and sweet. Good bitter hop bite with a citric kick and sweet caramel malt.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a very dry finish.

D - This is good. It really blurs the line between English and American IPA. Not a bad thing because it is still tasty.

500ml tapered tall bottle - about time this became available to we independently-minded beer store customers in Edmonchuk...

This beer pours a cloudy medium orange amber colour, with a stupid amount of effervescent, billowy, overflowing, counter-soaking thin foamy off-white head, which, by its very nature, takes a boatload of time to settle, eventually leaving a chain-link fence of lace around the glass. It smells of citrusy hops, pale malt, and funky yeast. The taste is slightly astringent caramel malt, somewhat bready in its demeanour, some Lost in Translation citrus flavours, bitter in their own right, and barnyard yeastiness. The carbonation is quite sedate after that unfortunate introductory temper tantrum, the body decently weighty, and just a wee bit tingly, smoothness adequate attained. It finishes off-dry, the yeast and mirror-world citrus still bringing the fruity funk.

Another welcome, but equally perplexing Japanese analogue of an American-bred style. Easy to drink, once you grind past the hard to avoid mindfuck - English, Japanese, Yankee - who, even in their right mind, really knows?

Aroma is strong and more fruity than hoppy, slightly sweet, with a floral hint - but still inviting. It pours a somewhat hazy dark amber, almost coppery, with a thick, fine-bubbled, persistent off-white head; haziness seems to increase a little as it sits in the mug I was using to sample this brewski. Flavor is quite hoppy, fairly but not fiercely bitter, with a sweet fruity undertone and a woody hint. Texture is silky-smooth with a subtle fizz, and it leaves a hoppy and rather tingly finish.

Picked this up at Mill Valley Market in the lovely Mill Valley, Ca., pretty solid selection. This is a pretty unique IPA, more of a British style, more malt dominated. The pour was a deep hazy caramel, smell was bitter and malty. This get's better as it warms, the malts begin to cover up the booze and quite tasty.

From notes:
Look:Very hazy orange with a decent head and nice lacing.
Smell: Very malty with a bit of an earthy hop note.also, a strange (as in unpleasent) funk note.
Taste:Much better than the smell. Nice and balanced with smooth, sweet malts right out front, followed by a hearty earthy and floral hop taste.
Mouth: Moderate thickness and carbonation, a bit thick for the style.
Drink: For the price of $8.49, the drinkability isn't great. It was certainly worth a try though. Wouldn't turn one down if offered.

Poured from a 500 mL bottle at O'Brien's, San Diego.

Pours a great copper color with a light white head. Looks pretty. Nice heavy aroma with some sweetness like an IIPA. Flavor is full of malts, hops, and sweetness. Nicely balanced. Perhaps a hint of alcohol, but it could just be the sweetness. Medium-bodied. Quite tasty and enjoyable.

A Japanese IPA comes in a tall, slender bottle, and I like the rather simple label.
Dirty orange pour, some shine to it. Clears up and retains the brownish hue. Not a bad foamed up head, bubbles keep coming yet seems a bit thin for all the excitement.
Hints of citrus in the nose are pounded down by a good push of caramel and malt. This doesn't smell like an IPA, though.
Aroma doesn't tell the whole story as the taste is rather large in biscuit, malt and toffee. A glimpse of citrus and earth come together with a bite, but this is a rather malty IPA. bitterness just isn't enough to justify the IPA designation. A good beer, but more of a Pale.

Picked up a bottle of this the other day at State Line.

This IPA pours an orange copper color with pretty good head retention and lacing. The nose is likewise attractive, though I can tell right off this beer is going to be on the sweet side. Along with the citrus aroma (ruby grapefruit), there is some noticeable malt and rock candy. The beer isn't quite as sweet on the palate, though it's still a bit sweeter then I normally like. Still, the beer is nicely balanced with some decent bitterness in the finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, with a decent finish. The sweetness and somewhat noticeasble alcohol in the finish are the only thinga that detract somewhat from the beer's drinkability.

Although this was nothing special, it was an interesting beer to try. Probably wouldn't get it again (the price is prohibitive given the numerous superior and cheaper IPA options made locally), but I'm glad I had a chance to try it.

Poured from "1 pint .9 oz" (500ml) bomber into a Dogfish Head signature glass (February 21, 2010). No 'bottled on' date. For a beer shipped from Japan, I'd really like to know when it was bottled, especially an IPA.

A Japanese IPA, fascinating.

Eyes: Pours a very hazy dark reddish color. A one finger head form with moderate retention and soapy lacing.

Nose: A very sweetish malt aroma with some heavy citrus, orange & tangerine. I'm looking (hoping?) for a bit more of the grapefruit and mango here, but no joy. Surprisingly complex on the nose.

Tongue: The flavor follows the aroma a bit too well. A strong malt character while a bit too weak on the hop front. I truly like the flavor, but not enough hops for me. Some notes of earthy dried fruits here, but not entirely like an IPA. It's a long way from Japan, could fading be an issue?

Mouth: Thick and full, but good carbonation for the mass.

Libation: I like this and would try it again, but not for the $9, and not when I'm craving an IPA. It's great to know here is a decent craft beer scene in Japan, and even better to know that they are available here in Chicago. Now if only they could start using 'bottled on' dates...
