Served in a Sam Adams sensory pint glass at the Schaumburg Whole Foods.
What, no fresh smoked bock? Anyway, this stuff pours a clear amber-russet topped by a finger of off-cream foam. The nose comprises light hickory-smoked bacon, light maple syrup, and light candied orange peel. Somehow, all of these factors seem fairly muted. The taste holds notes of dried maple syrup, toffee, very light candied orange peel, and some mild smoke in the background. Once again, most elements are kinda muted, save the bock-y toffee and syrup. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda slick feel. Overall, a solid bock, though the advertised smoke is on the subtle side, and the remaining bock is closer to the middle of the road than either exceptional edge.

Poured into a 1/2 liter stein a deep garnet color with one finger off white crown that settles slowly leaving a few "globs" of lace as it settled into a frothy mass.A good amount of oak smoke in the nose along with mild toast and caramel.Meaty smoke flavors up front with a bit of tasted oak notes,the sweetness creeps giving a caramel and rumy element in the finish.Not bad,to be honest maybe better than expected,dare I say a good English lager?

Poured from a 750mL caged-and-corked bottle into a water glass.
Muddy auburn body with a soapy beige cap - weak head formation, sloppy lacing, and faint legs.
Well balanced smoked and base (Munich) malt in the nose with a touch of spicy/minty noble hops rounding things out.
Lightly sweet palate entry, bready with significant smoke flavor (never quite acrid), a gentle almost citrus-like tartness, and a pleasing grassy/peppery touch of hops, though no bitterness. Bright and hearty with an earthy tobacco-tinged finish.
Light-bodied, vaguely oily, with sufficient carbonation (it doesn't take much as the smoke contributes a certain tannic bite all its own).
A subtle very tasty rauchbier with a smooth well lagered base.

750 ml caged and corked bottle, stamp on bottle says Best Before End 16 10 14 (but it is kinda hard to read). Served in a mug, the beer pours a clear reddish/amber color with a half inch off-white head that fizzled away quickly. Not very much lacing at all. The aroma is nice, it smells like smoked malt/meats, caramel and grainy malt, and a bit of dark fruit. It tastes like smoked malt/meat, caramel malt, toffee, and some dark fruit. The smoke in both the aroma and taste is noticeable, but not overpowering. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit oily and has moderate carbonation. Overall I think it's a decent enough brew. Worth a try, but at $11.99 a bottle I'm not sure I'f I'd pick this up again at that price.

hope this is the right beer. label is different, much more modern. and they dropped the "old" from the name. 6%abv vintage date 2/11/09 and bottle #2818 of 3860
golden/copper color. very clear. medium high carbonation. nice off white head. very light and refreshing looking.
malty aroma dominates. a slight sweetness from the higher abv. smoke is understated and i probably wouldnt pick it out right away if i didnt know it was there. as it is, the smoke is a delicate mix of wood and bacon with perhaps the bacon being slightly stronger.
good malt flavor but still manages to finish clean. very little yeast or fermentation character for a bigger lager. the smoke is light but does add character to the beer. little residual sweetness to make it heavy or cloying. bitterness mixes with the malt in sort of a german pils way only with a bit of, not sure. not a lot of crystal malt if any. maybe dark munich or something like that.
glad i picked this up. very interesting beer. the light smoke mixes well with this light dry lager.

Source: 750 ml corked bottle. No freshness date.
Appearance: Pours reddish brown into an Imperial pint. Serious 1½-2 head dissipates fairly quickly to a fine light tan sheet. A few non-concentrated bubbles from the bottom.
Smell: Malty, with a hint of Im going to use this word a few times smokiness coming through.
Taste: Smoke and malt hit you up front, but not in an overpowering way; its really quite balanced. A nice hop bitterness comes through in the end, but it is again not overwhelming.
Mouthfeel: Mouthfeel is substantial.
Drinkability: I wasnt familiar with the style and thought that, even if I liked the style, it wouldnt be very drinkable. I wouldnt call this a typical session beer, but you could easily drink several, particularly if you had some nice smoked meat (maybe BBQ?) to pair it with.

A copper beer with a thin head. Very clear.
Smell of smoke and wood. A subtle English fruitiness coming from the yeast.
Taste is mild smokey with a light roast. Although the color is light for a bock, it has a dark malt taste. The smoke is not in your face, but dominates the taste of the beer. It is a sort of birch-like smokiness. The malt is a little dextrinous and has bready notes. Bitterness is clean, but has some rough raw hop notes. Mouthfeel is a little sticky but not sweet.

On-tap 3/15/2013 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a tulip glass.
A: The beer is a dark reddish brown color, with a short off-white head that fades quickly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains smoked caramelized malts, lager yeast, some fruit and a touch of hops.
T: The taste starts out bready with a hearty malt character and lager yeast. Then some somkiness come in along with a mild caramel sweetness. The hops presence is mild and brings a good balance. The after-taste is smoky and slightly bready.
M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.
O: Tasty, goes down ok, not too filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a solid smoked beer worth drinking for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

750ml bottle purchased as a single from somewhere localish, I think. Corked and caged.
Poured into an imperial pint, formed a 1/4" beige head over the slightly cloudy dark caramel brew. Head falls to a skim pretty quick, with leggy sheeting lace. Aroma is malts with a tinge of smoke.
Taste continues the sweet and smoke of the nose, a peek of fruitiness in the middle, then coasts through a balanced close, with a few wisps of smoke left in the wake. Mouthfeel is smooth, and drinkability is pretty good. Want more smoke, but just being able to note any is better than some smoke brews.

Amber/mahogany with a nice tan head and decent carbonation considering there was no real pop on teh cork ... a tiny poof from the pull. Light sweet Munich malt aromas with a little smoke character. A bit more smoke character on the front of the taste with a nice solid maltiness. Medium bodied and smooth with a dry malty finish and traces of smoke.
Very nice Bock that picks up incremental traces of smoke as it warms up...

Corked and caged bottle, refrigerator temperature with BBQ beef brisket and ribs.
A: Dark reddish brown color, short off-white head that fades but leaves a nice lace on the glass.
S: Smoke aroma with caramelized malts, lager yeast and a touch of hops.
T: Bready taste initially with malty character and lager yeast. Subsequently, smokiness comes in along with a bit of caramel sweetness. A hoppy presence is mild and brings a balance to taste. After-taste pleasant smoky and slightly bready.
M: Smooth, crisp, medium body, good carbonation, finish is dry.
O: Tasty, goes down nice, not too filling, solid smoked beer, not overpowering, worth drinking if you’re in the mood for the style.

750 ml bottle into tulip glass, best before 11/10/2014. Pours lightly hazy deep ruby red color with a 2 finger fairly dense khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, pepper, brown bread, nuttiness, raisin, herbal, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of malt and yeast notes; with good strength. Taste of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, molasses, brown bread, nuttiness, light pepper, herbal, light leather, and yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of wood, smoked meat, caramel, toast, toffee, brown bread, molasses, nuttiness, herbal, light pepper, and yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance, complexity, and robustness of dark and smoked malt flavors with yeast ester notes; and zero cloying sweetness after the finish. Light-medium carbonation and medium bodied; with a creamy and lightly slick mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice smoked bock style. All around nice complexity, balance, and robustness of malt flavors; and very smooth to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

(Bottle) Pours amber to reddish brown with a medium, off-white to sand colored head. The aroma is medium to heavily malty with a nice balance between the smoked qualities and the rather massive bready, toasted, nutty cookies and tiny caramelly notes. The undertones bring hints of spices like clove and cardamom, honey, low alpha herbal hops, dark fruits/prunes and some apples. The nose is not too sweet which I personally like. The flavour starts a bit sweet with robust malty tones of dark grainy bread, toast, nuts and just a touch of prunes. The finish is a bit dryer with a lemon acid-like sting. Spicy and herbal hoppy. The mouthfeel is smooth, round, acidic and soft carbonated. Light to medium bitter. The aftertaste is of bread, spices and smoke. Medium bodied. The acidic notes grows stronger as the beer gets warmer, it might be infected.

The colour is deep amber; the beige high foam sinks down to a finger thick head leaving lots of lacing. The liquid is hazy.
The smell got mild notes of smoked malt, a dry hoppy bitterness and chemical notes of soap and alcohol.
The taste is at first lightly smoked, and surprisingly light/drinkable. Bitter hints are followed by an interesting sour, almost tart lemon-lime flavour. Where are the malts? The aftertaste got mild notes of smoke/tar, citric notes and some bitter herbs.
The carbonation is a little odd: It is mild, yet the small bubbles are almost sharp. The liquid is relatively light.
A different beer and a very different bock. Lots of unexpected tart notes and almost none of the malty notes I expect from a bock. Still, it is quite drinkable.
Or is my bottle infected? Hmmm.

This unfiltered 750ml bottle was a beer club selection; served at 50F. Pours with a very large tan head into a pint glass, beer is a reddish-copper color.
The barely-readable front label's grey text notes that this beer was made with Rauchbier malt.
Nose is of roasted malt, just a hint of actual smoke in the nose.
Taste is another thing entirely, the woodsmoke is dominant but not overpowering or overbearing. The roast/burnt malt taste accompanies and works very well with it. The beer is mildly bitter towards the end of the taste and into the aftertaste.
The finish is not very smoky, but instead like the nose, mildy roasted, burnt taste fading away.
This beer is fabulous and very drinkable. Highly Recommended. I generally do not like to open a 750ml of a beer I have never tried if I am alone, but in this case I finished the whole thing wanting more!

Poured in a stein, the beer has a nice caramel color indicative of Bocks, with a 3/4 finger head.
Aroma: strong fruit at first, which changes to a pronounced peat smell. The beer is brewed with Beechwood smoked malts from Bavaria, which gives it a peaty smell reminiscent of the aroma of the peat in single malt whiskey.
The mouth feel is lightly carbonated, common to the style.
The taste is very "smoky" i.e. peaty. A very unusual beer, most likely very untypical for a British brewery. It is currently not brewed by Meantime. It is highly recommended, especially if one likes peat in Bocks.
Best glass:large Balloon or Stein.
