Poured from a huge 750ml bottle into a straight sided pint pot to reveal a red hued beer like diluted cola with a big bubbled frothy head that soon goes but with the big bottle is soon back.

Smells of malts, toffee apples and roses in bloom

The taste is a well rounded affair staring quite sweet with caramel notes then becoming hoppy and intensely bitter with grapefruit aspects but there is something perhaps in the depth that is missing.

Fairly flimsy mouthfeel and quite lively on the tongue that makes a thirst quenching half decent brew.

Cork and caged 0.75 litre bottle (Greenwich Red Ale, formally known as Yakima Red I believe): best before 02/2013, poured into three chalices in 08/2012 at home.

Looks good colour wise: a red/amber blend, with an off-white covering of bubbles.

The aroma was thin: hops (piney and citrus) just about sniff-able as the beer warmed, add some red berries to the esters.

The taste was a mixture of flavours: red berries, yeastiness, semi-sweet molasses and mixed spices all wrapped up in a mild hop bitterness.

Well carbonated but a little on the weak side of body strength: flavours strong enough but it just seemed a bit watery towards the end of each sip. I enjoyed my third, but didn’t need another.

Clear leathery amber that is ruby in light with loose parchment froth that holds longer than it looks like it would and trails a bit.
Hoppy resin and red grapefruit on the nose but caramel, toast and red fruit, too - layered and bright.
Pecan, dark toast, and dried apricot with wood oil, pine sap and a touch of grapefruit rind hops to end.
Concentrated OJ finish and red currant linger. Light leaning towards medium, fizzy, crisp, soft stick.

Malts slightly over hops, which I have to question - why use 5 kinds from Yakima Valley if they're playing second fiddle? But they do show themselves, giving some balance and nuance. Trouble is the thin body and weak ABV. I get what Meantime is doing - a quenching table beer for English palates - and it is what it sets out to be. I just wish it were... something else. 5AM Saint, probably.
