11.2 swing top bottle pours a deep clear reddish brown color with a nice creamy light brown head that leaves a sticky lacing in my glass. Fruity vinegar aromas, cherry, sour apple and vinegar flavors. Medium bodied with a smooth and creamy mouthfeel, finishes sour, very delicious.

Appearance – This one was almost black in color with a dark purple hue around the edges and a modest head.

Smell – The big, malty sourness was prominent in the nose. I couldn’t really pick up much else except that. It was primarily cherry.

Taste – The sourness was much lighter at the taste. It was well-mixed with some darkish malts and a light yeast flavor.

Mouthfeel – This one was light to medium-bodied with some subtle carbonation that tingled the tongue.

Drinkability – This isn’t my favorite style but they pulled it off well enough.

Yet another very cool looking swingtop bottle. The top comes off with a super loud pop that makes me flinch. Whoa! Pours a nice dark brown with hints of red and a good bubbly off white head. When held up to the light the brew looks blood red, quite nice. The aroma starts with a sour cherry along with molasses, chocolate, caramel, raisin and an underlying woody funkiness that has a slight vinegar twang to it. Funky chocolate covered cherries....yum! I really enjoy the nose here and it keeps me coming back for more.

A dark sweet and sour cherry flavor flows over the palate along with a healthy maltiness that has notes of sweet caramel and chocolate. Hints of wood and vinegar peek through with each sip. The brew is quite a bit sweeter than the nose led on, however there's still a nice sour/bitter component that helps to balance it out. Lingering funky yeast notes and acidity make me think of a lambic. Overall, I find this to be quite a tasty brew.

Mouthfeel is fairly thin, but it's smooth, refreshing and enjoyable. Each sip is quite complex and keeps me coming back for another. This is very drinkable...I could easily have sat down to a 750 no problem and I wish I had more than 11.2oz. I will be seeking out more Flanders Red Ales and I would recommend this one as well.

Slightly chilled 11.2oz. swing-top bottled served in a wine glass.

Pours a medium brown color with a touch of red. Quite highly carbonated. Interesting grey-brown head.

Smells of tart cherries and lime with faintly earthy and grassy aromas.

Tart cherry and lime flavors somewhat overpowering the more complex woody and earthy components; not particularly balanced. Very subtle vinegar flavor. Dry finish.

Good mouthfeel and quite easy to drink and quite refreshing.

Not my favorite Flanders Red Ale, but worth a try.

What happens when an importer gains the power to make changes in a brew house thousands of miles away? We get a US version of Mestreechs Aajt, with no saccharin and 1.5% more alcohol by volume. Woo-hoo!

Presented in its own glassware (a wide and short flute), the beer has a mesmerizing dark ruby color to it with black edges. An off-white, tight, creamy lace crowns it and retains a decent level of lace throughout the experience.

Aroma is sweet & sour, like a pack of Smarties, with distinct black cherries and fruity berries.

Body is a bit light and the mouthfeel smooth, with a gentle tartness that segues into a sharp, lime and rind bitterness. As the bitterness comes down, the palate is treated to an amazing juicy black cherry flavor that dominates and clings to the upper palate. The black cherry / lime flavors are very refreshing and work well together (literally think "black cherry juice with lime squeezed into it"). As the beer warms, a thin caramel sweetness pulls through, followed by a lingering purple grape finish that's a bit vinous. All of this happens in mere seconds as the flavors are very quick and short lived, leaving an extremely clean, dry, more-ish finish.

Despite the quickness on the palate, this beer could quite possibly be one of my top picks of the year. It's highly refreshing and packed with simple, bold and clean flavors. Simply an amazing beer.

No dating. Deep chocolate brown that you cannot see through unless you hold the bottle up to the light, then you catch glimpses of ruby at the edges. Rich and creamy coffee ice-cream head. My god, such an insane scent! This one just freakin’ blows me away... Deep ripe dark berries. It is like I am licking a bowl of raspberry preserves... and I have not even brought my lips to the glass. -Makes me salivate from just the aroma. Wonderfully sour! I can barely stop smelling it to start tasting it! The first sip just grabs your taste buds and shakes the hell out of your tongue and nerves a bit, then everything calms down and becomes all so lovely. The smooth silkiness and medium bodied goodness flows in. Such wonderful soured flavors. Gueuze-like with a nice woodsy oakiness that is in the background, not too strong. Bit of plump blackberries jumping out. Great sipper, highly enjoyable one that I could sit back and enjoy a few of.

Presentation: From the bottle @ Anam Cara.

Appearance: Crazy bubble fest shows off a light tan lace after it drops out, dark tan leather hue has clarity.

Smell: Solid tartness, juicy fruitiness with suggestions of buckwheat honey which clash against the brashness of oakiness.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Restrained pungency, ripe cherry in the front with a ghost vanilla within the woody puckered character. Lots of brown bread on the palate as well.

Drinkability & Notes: Extremely drinkable and surprisingly approachable. Quite awesome and balance to a T.

Gulpener was my favorite brewery during my trips to the Netherlands, several years ago, but I don't remember sampling this Flanders Red ale. What a treat to find a Gulpener offering of any kind just a daytrip away from home.
This pours a clear and shimmering, dark mahogany body in the goblet, appearing garnet when held to the light. Small, ivory head quickly fades into collar and film lace.
Oak wood aromas hit the nose first, but I'm not certain this is barrel aged. Tart cherries quickly emerge, with a sourness that is suggestive of a flavored vinegar. There is also a distinct, barnyard chickenhouse yeasty presence that is very similar to a Lambic.
The mouthfeel is soft and satiny, with a medium body and low carbonation.
The taste is divine. Some toffeeish malt flavors around the edges envelop the essence of this nectar, the tart, fruitiness that is mouth puckering. Sour cherries seem to combine with green apples plucked from the tree several weeks before they're ripe. Woody tones are noted as well, suggestive of oak barrel aging. The yeast is more prominent in the nose than the taste, but offers a welcome earthiness. The complexities combine for a subtle and well balanced palate, that is exceptionally drinkable. This ale is not heavy, at all, and is anything but cloying. I could have several of these at a sitting. I don't mean to imply that this is not a sipping ale, for it most certainly is. I can't believe that I only bought a single bottle. Another beer road trip is definitely in the near future, in order to acquire a decent stock of this fine Flanders Red. Gulpener, by the way, is brewed in Netherlands' Limburg province, very near the Belgian border, so this one can lay a good claim to regional authenticity. An excellent experience here! I need more.

On tap at the Blind tiger, NYC. Pours ruby red with a reddish medium bubble head. Nose is clearly of spicy old stinky feet/cheese. Sharp, fruity,sour, cherries, plums and other fruit flavors in the mix. Malty flavors come in later and make this more user friendly. Sourness not overwhelming. Take some getting used to, but clearly an interesting, complex creation. Have an open mind and give this stuff a try.

On-tap at the Brick Store.

Pours a dark ruby color with a tan head that leaves decent lacing.

Smells of moderately tart raspberries backed by slightly sweet medium malts.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Slightly dry medium malts up front are joined quickly by tart raspberries and cherries and slight musty flavors. Midway through the flavor profile sweetens a bit, carrying through to a mildly tart finish. Mouthfeel is good, with active carbonation.

Overall this was one of the least-sweet Flanders Reds I’ve had in a while and it was certainly enjoyable. Worth a shot.

A- This beer pours a dark mahogany brown body with a fizzy light brown head that turns rocky very quickly. There appears to be lots of carbonation of tiny bubbles.

S- Even as I pour I detect an odor of red wine vinegar. On closer sniff, I notice hints of cherries and a faint note of fresh bread.

T- The flavor starts with a soft mild sour note that has a faint cola hint. In the finish there is a very soft old oak note that has a slight sweetness to it giving a note of cherries and vanilla.

M- This beer has a medium mouthfeel that might be a bit more full from the fizz in the texture. There is no alcohol warmth or astringency at all. The sour notes are very gentle.

D- This beer is a gateway beer to the Flanders Reds. It is very soft and mild leaving me wanting more pucker, more sour and more oak notes. I think it needs more of everything but it is pleasant to drink if I wasn't hoping for a big Flanders.

Served in a oversized wine glass at the Holy Grale in Louisville, KY.

A - Deep Ruby. Looks a dark brown or black until held up to the light. Frothy, off white head, one finger worth, holds steadily. tiny little bubbles of carbonation. lots of lacing.

S - Awesome sour notes. granny smith apples, vinegar, wine, cherry, grapes

T - Starts sweet, ends sour. Excellent blend. very mellow. slight acidity on the tongue initially. all mentioned smells- very complex.

M - Frothy, fruity, viscosity is high, leaves a light soft and fuzzy fruit flavor to savor.

O - Delicious. Keeps you wanting more. never to sweet - but personally i could have it more sour - maybe too mellow? I would certainly buy this again tho.

Enjoyed on tap at Blue Monk. Very dark head with lots of lace and a quarter inch of retained head. Sour cherry and wood aroma. Medium bodied. A bit of vinegar in finish. Comes across most as a mellowed Flanders Red. Satisfying, very good drinkability.Wood taste is only nominal.

I really love this style of beer. Although not quite as good as the Duchess but still a great representation of the beer style.
Mestreech poured to a beautiful ruby red with a slightly tannish head. Distinct berry aroma with a sharp tangy taste that seems to be a bit to tart but certainly a beer worth looking for.

The Meestrech's Aajt is an impressive example of the Flander's red style. This version is unsweetened, and I assume their European version is more like the Duchess de Borugone.

It pours a reddish-chestnut brown beneath a short lid of creamy tan foam that drops shortly to a standard collar with just some spider-web surface covering (which is common for the style). It does, however, leave some nice splashes and spots of lace about the goblet.

The nose is grape and cherry-like, with some earthy character (muddy barnyard), and some mild acetone. It's medium-light bodied and gently effervescent. The flavor is a bit more intense than the nose suggests, and includes a wider range of fruit (some plum), more tartness over some sweet caramelish maltiness. The bitterness is limited, as it should be, and the tart character over-rides its sweetness to become acidic and dry in the finish.

Refreshing and exciting!

Almost opaque from the side, a deep, deep ruby under the light. A finger give or take of large-bubble offwhite head. Laces decently.

That signature tangy sour smell of a Flemish sour; more vinegar than citrus or anything. Sort of an apple cider vinegar nose.

Taste is remarkably rich, smooth, and balanced. The vinegary, kombucha-esque tartness, sure, but balanced by a ton of sweetness and some malt character that reminds you that in fact the lovely fermented beverage in front of you is beer. Grape tanginess overtones, especially on the finish. Remarkably sweet start, date-like or pruney. There's something very faintly vegetal here, but I can't put my finger on it. Possible rotkraut. The aftertaste is a bit sticky, so consider having with a glass of water. Magnificently complex for a style I had almost written off as one-dimensional.

Mouthfeel is good, a bit prickly, but nothing objectionable. Pretty average.

Overall, this is the best Flemish sour I've ever had. It has a complexity and balance that a lot of sours lack.

Served from tap into a Trappe Door tulip. Poured a deep yellow reddish brown with a half finger light tan head that remained throughout. Maintained nice lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, raspberry, strawberry, sour, wood, and sugar. The flavor was of sweet malt, strawberry, raspberry, fruit, sugar, wood, and subtle tart. It had a light feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a good brew. I went into this one not really knowing what to expect at all. What I found really wasn’t too bad. There was a huge amount of sweetness going on that made this one quite refreshing and easy to drink overall. This nice touch of tartness going on really helped this aspect as well to make it fairly well balanced. It would definitely be easy to drink quite a bit of this before realizing you had done so. Definitely worth trying if you get the chance.

Recently sampled this on tap, after it's extended hiatus from the US. Haven't seen any bottles show up yet.

Dark brown body with tan suds that lingered for awhile. Astringent tart and sweet grape aroma, seems backsweetened. The taste confirms this, it's a bit thin and caramelly sweet, with a muddled grape/cherry tartness to it. Some cardboard notes hint at oxidation. Not as good as I remember, little to no acidity here, no oak woodiness or anything remotely wild. Seems dumbed down from the old version, little more than a second-rate Duchesse knockoff. Wouldn't be surprised if this had saccharine added. Can't say i'll be drinking this over Rodenbach/Jacobins anytime soon.

Poured from an 11.2 oz. flip-top bottle. Carbonation forces a cracking sound once the seal is broken. The ale pours a deep garnet hue, capped with khaki foam that rises and falls to a patchy film. A swirl of the bottle adds another finger of dense aromatic foam.

Aromas are strongly of ripened cheese, and sour funky fruit. This heightens the tastes, which seem to follow the aroma further into sweet and sour territory. Oak, cherry, malt, and leather interplay for a brief moment before it's tart and dry finish closes out. Mouthfeel begins a little thin, but is balanced well by the rich flavors. A sipper for me, but it would be a sure session candidate.

Not as sour as Rodenbach, or as woody, sweet, and complex as the Duchesse. Overall, a solid Flanders Red, balancing the best qualities of the style. Try to find a fresh bottle, it doesn't age so well.

11.2 oz. swingtop bottle. Very dark brown burgandy color. Some hints of ruby around the edges, but mostly very dark. Thin white head disappears quickly. The nose is very wine-like. Grapes, oaky, other fruity smells. Very tart, acidic and sharp. The tartness drops off at the end. Dry, no bitterness. Medium body, very low carbonation. Some good flavors picked up from the oak. Very interesting beer. Not the most drinkable, but very good.
