Lucent dark bronze that betrays a deep orangish crimson hue when backlit. The malted milk ball colored cap is at two fingers after the pour, deflates a mite too quickly and leaves a high collar of sudsy lace on the glass.

I could tell when I popped the top that the nose was a good one. It's powerful enough to appreciate when pouring, which always wins favor with me (provided, of course, that it's enjoyable). The beer is intensely fruity and pungently sour with a funkiness that reminds me of Belgian yeast, but is tangential to it in a way that I can't adequately describe. I hope it tastes like it smells.

Not quite, but close. The bold flavor is all the more surprising since this is a relatively light-bodied beer. Mestreechs Aajt is impressively tart. It tweaks the salivary glands with gusto and doesn't let up until well after the swallow. It's also intensely fruity (sour cherries, sour grapes and fermented Granny Smith apples) with a light dusting of nutmeg and allspice. Although not overly so, it's also a little woody from its one year confinement in oak.

The unquestionably light body doesn't degrade within each mouthful or with warming. Thanks to an abundance of flavor and a trivial amount of light syrupiness, the beer is able to maintain its composure in the mouth and to last beyond the swallow.

I bought this little stoppered, swing-top bottle because I thought it looked interesting. Even though I'm not yet well-versed in the Flanders red ale style, I consider Mestreechs Aajt to be uncommonly good beer. I love rewarding impulse purchases.

No dating. Deep chocolate brown that you cannot see through unless you hold the bottle up to the light, then you catch glimpses of ruby at the edges. Rich and creamy coffee ice-cream head. My god, such an insane scent! This one just freakin’ blows me away... Deep ripe dark berries. It is like I am licking a bowl of raspberry preserves... and I have not even brought my lips to the glass. -Makes me salivate from just the aroma. Wonderfully sour! I can barely stop smelling it to start tasting it! The first sip just grabs your taste buds and shakes the hell out of your tongue and nerves a bit, then everything calms down and becomes all so lovely. The smooth silkiness and medium bodied goodness flows in. Such wonderful soured flavors. Gueuze-like with a nice woodsy oakiness that is in the background, not too strong. Bit of plump blackberries jumping out. Great sipper, highly enjoyable one that I could sit back and enjoy a few of.

11.2 oz, squat, brown bottle with "ceramic" flip top. Ingredients: malt, water, hops, yeast.

This Flanders red (or is it a Flemish brown?) ale poured a clear, dark, coffee brown color with light brown foam that settled leaving suds on the surface but clinging to the glass a bit in clumps. The smell was sharp and tart and even a bit sour, with a wild, citrus and cherry aroma going on -- I love it. The taste was tart to sour but with an underlying sweetness especially towards the finish. There were woody notes and some wild funkiness, and a fruity, cherry flavor (where does that come from?), and a base maltiness under it all. A great flavor that really grew on me from the first time I tasted this beer. The mouthfeel was wonderfullly tart with medium body and modest carbonation. The malt and tart flavors lingered in the aftertaste. This is a really great beer, and when it is fresh, it is incredible. But when it is old (especially on tap), it loses its luster quickly.

pours a dark brown with hints of ruby. No head to speak of. Aromas are more like a cider than any malt or hops. The flavors are very muted, nothing really stands out. Some granny smith apple flavors, some crispness, grass and lightly soured. There is a little sourness left after swallowing, but overall, very little aftertaste. The mouthfeel is crisp, lightly carbonated and quaffable, inoffensive. I wuold not buy this again, but was a decent enought beer - unobtrusive.

Pours a deep red, the sort that brings to mind more elaborate descriptions but I'll leave the color at very deep and lusciously red. Almost brown in tone. Surprisingly good lacing though the head was non-existent.

Smells lightly of vinegar over bare fruit tones. Very malty but quietly so due to the lack of carbonation.

A balanced and easy-drinking take on the style, round and strangely malty with little sour character besides licks of lemon in the finish. Seeing as this beer is a blend of a Flemish Red and a Dunkel this version seems tipped toward the latter. Very malty and lager smooth, incredibly so for the style and thus lacking the sour and semi-roast complexity found in the scions of Flanders. Mouthfeel is round and full but dead flat, killing any complexity that the beer might have had. Might.

Smooth easy-drinker with little spunk. Not a beer I'd buy again.

My first ever Flemish Red Ale. I've heard some bad things about this one, but overall I guess I liked it, sort of. Nice hearty nose with woody and malt tones fading quickly into nothing. No aftertaste to speak of, but overall this is a nice sipping ale despite being distinctly sour.

The lack of complexity suprised me considering this style's reputation for it, but I was fairly satisfied overall.

I was excited to try a new Flemish red ale, but this really didn't cut it for me, and yes it was the 5% US version. A dark reddish plum with a small head of off-white/beige. The aromas were of several malts, a bit of oak, some funk, and no hops. The taste was quite malty but pretty one dimensional with a bit of oak in the mix as well. This was OK, but bland for a flemish red, and nowhere near a rodenbach level of complexity. The mouthfeel was medium bodied and decent but the drinkability was not the best. Decent for a flemish red, but there are many better examples, imho.

Was able to give this brew a try last evening while at Mahar’s. What a fantastic brew! It poured to a reddish brown color and left a fair sized off-white head that had nice retention and left very nice lacing through out the whole brew. The smells where very aromatic with dark fruits, mostly sour cherries being predominant. The taste is fantastic, sourness is very pronounced from the get-go along with a rich malt flavor. Also can notice yeast like flavor with this brew that seems to give it a bread like note. The sourness is very smooth and goes extraordinary well with this brew. This is an extremely easy drinking brew and I must say has become one of my favorites. If you can give this brew a try, matters if you enjoy this class of brew but if so I think you will be very happy!

Thanks Terry at Mount View for putting this in my basket. This style is relatively new to me, the only other sour beer I've had is Dutchess.

It pours a lively copper-red with a hint of cloudiness and a massive marshmellow fluff head, wicked lace and head retention. Aromas of musty earth, apple-cidar, muscat grapes, candy-apple, and pickled fruit.

Flavor is initially cidar-sweet with a very musty barn-yard note, almost Bordeaux-like followed by sour grapes and faint vinegar. There is a great balance between sweet and sour that makes each sip a pleasure. Mild malt is in there somewhere, and no hops that I can detect.

Mouthfeel is somewhat grainy with a medium body and active carbonation. Wierd, but definately grows on you. I saw it on tap at Delaney's ( New haven, CT) but didn't try it. Now I wish that I had!!!

Somehow this one doesn't seem to appear to have any carbonation. Turns out it is very light, but the dark deep ruby tones fail to make up for the lack of head or lacing. The nose is slight soysauce. No, cherry cough syrup. Woody with the faint nose of actual cherries. The aroma of them just sitting in your bowl as well as the medicinal flavor of cherries.

It begins with this intense sourness that just gives way completely to a cherry note that ends with the cherries almost leaving and no sourness or tartness. It is quite incredible that this happens as the sourness just kind of kicks you and runs away rather quickly. Getting used to this one is amazing. I love the way it comes down. I don't think there should have been huge bubbly carbonation, but the slight carbonation is less than amazing. Good beer, though. Maybe some more tartness and some more carbonation next time.

Poured a deep red,almost translucent maroon, with a short lived creamy white head that left sparse lacing on the glass.

The aroma is fruity ripe apples, plums with almost a cider vinegar like quality.

The taste is refreshingly sour, wow what a refreshing taste. This cleanses your palate and your sinuses. No lingering aftertaste to speak of. No heavy maltiness nor even a hint of hops.

Mouthfeel was good, light carbonation coupled with the sourness made for a well balanced sensory experience.

If it was not so pricey I coul make this a regular "after yardwork" beer.

Lots of difficult to read writing on the bottle. Pours a brownish red with small 1 mm wisp of foam on top.

Smell is sour cherry quite acidic and like musty wood. Taste is very sour but it finishes dry and has a slight tingly bite to it.

Mouthfeel is very dry and fruity and the drinkability on these Flanders sour reds is never that high anyway. This one is not as good as some others of this style I have tried. I would probably not buy this one again.

Label Lingo and Bottle Babble: Intriguing mini flip top ceramic 11.2 FL OZ. Dual labeled with a logo neck label and the mail body label containing a medieval sketch of brewing and a town landscape. Ingredients: Malt, water, hops, yeast.

Dark ruby and mahogany yet clear pour into a slender pilsner with a jagged spotty khaki head cover leaving a thin collar ring and some top level foam lace.

Highly pungent mouth watering sour Granny Smith apple tartness. Plenty of funky Grandma’s attic and redolent dark fruit scents.

First Swigs: Cranberry and plum tart. Finishes dry. A bit Earthy and mineraly. Plenty of sour citrous lemony peel notes. Fruit pucker is endless. Plums some under-ripe peach. Good amount of barnyard and Pez candy powdery sweetness. Delicious.

Crisp clean ginger ale body and feel. Highly drinkable but to be picayune on such a fine beer, a twinge more lemon lime would have been exquisite. Still, an excellent style.

Last Swigs: Plum flavored 7-Up. Practically took out my eye with the Fssst! Pop opening. A new favorite style for me. Light 5% ABV. Thanks to Beerookie for the bottle. Usually goes for $3.00~ a bottle.

Beer is good. Happy sour beering.

Grabbed this brew from New England Beverage in Orange. I am drinking a chilled sample in a snifter. The bottle opens with a pop and release of mist. Pours a clear chestnut with deep ruby tints. A small frothy off white head foams up and fades quickly.
Aroma is sour cherry dominant but also allows some vanilla sweetness and a bit of biscuity scent as well. First sip reveals an average body fine prickly carbonation. Flavor is very tart with sour cherries and white wine characteristics dominating. The beer is very dry and again I think of white wine/white grapes while drinking.
I also get some banana as the beer warms a little. This beer is very enjoyable and I will definitely buy it again.

The beer poured crystal clear deep amber brown with a tan head which rose slowly but had staying power to last at it's low level and lace the glass.

The aroma was acetic and lactic sourness followed by a malty floral aroma. Cherries and oak also dominated the aroma.

The flavor was soft, only slightly sour with a grainy flavor that tickled the tongue. The vinegar sourness that was pungent in the aroma was noticeably subdued in the flavor. The flavor contained a complexity of oak and cherries and a fruitiness that was very well done. Tart would be a good way to describe the flavor, but not in a harsh way at all.

The finish was just dry, slightly grainy, and with a subtle sour yet malty cherry impression lasting long into the aftertaste. The body was medium and nice for the style.

11.2 ounce bail top bottle. No sediment in bottle...none. Purchased at Greens Warehouse in Columbia, SC. Very complex and interesting, I am glad I made this purchase.

Appearance: Ruddy chestnut with light carbonation and a small head. Sticky spots and streaks of lacing.

Smell: Funky lambic-esque aroma, with wine-like qualities. Tart cherries with wood and leather in the mix.

Taste: Surprisingly un-funky considering the smell, but still sharp, tart, and acidic. Some sweetness remains, but is quickly swept away by the acidic, bone-dry finish. Quite vinous after the swallow, oddly reminiscent of red wine.

My first Flanders Red, and certainly an enjoyable experience. A big thanks goes out to HumblePatience for the chance to try this.

Gulpener was my favorite brewery during my trips to the Netherlands, several years ago, but I don't remember sampling this Flanders Red ale. What a treat to find a Gulpener offering of any kind just a daytrip away from home.
This pours a clear and shimmering, dark mahogany body in the goblet, appearing garnet when held to the light. Small, ivory head quickly fades into collar and film lace.
Oak wood aromas hit the nose first, but I'm not certain this is barrel aged. Tart cherries quickly emerge, with a sourness that is suggestive of a flavored vinegar. There is also a distinct, barnyard chickenhouse yeasty presence that is very similar to a Lambic.
The mouthfeel is soft and satiny, with a medium body and low carbonation.
The taste is divine. Some toffeeish malt flavors around the edges envelop the essence of this nectar, the tart, fruitiness that is mouth puckering. Sour cherries seem to combine with green apples plucked from the tree several weeks before they're ripe. Woody tones are noted as well, suggestive of oak barrel aging. The yeast is more prominent in the nose than the taste, but offers a welcome earthiness. The complexities combine for a subtle and well balanced palate, that is exceptionally drinkable. This ale is not heavy, at all, and is anything but cloying. I could have several of these at a sitting. I don't mean to imply that this is not a sipping ale, for it most certainly is. I can't believe that I only bought a single bottle. Another beer road trip is definitely in the near future, in order to acquire a decent stock of this fine Flanders Red. Gulpener, by the way, is brewed in Netherlands' Limburg province, very near the Belgian border, so this one can lay a good claim to regional authenticity. An excellent experience here! I need more.

Presentation: From the bottle @ Anam Cara.

Appearance: Crazy bubble fest shows off a light tan lace after it drops out, dark tan leather hue has clarity.

Smell: Solid tartness, juicy fruitiness with suggestions of buckwheat honey which clash against the brashness of oakiness.

Taste & Mouth Feel: Restrained pungency, ripe cherry in the front with a ghost vanilla within the woody puckered character. Lots of brown bread on the palate as well.

Drinkability & Notes: Extremely drinkable and surprisingly approachable. Quite awesome and balance to a T.

Pours a deep reddish auburn color with a medium beige head. Thin and quick lacing. The aroma is strong sour apple along with vinegar and spice. Medium-bodied and smooth with tart fruit (apple again), yeast and some malt tastes. Also a little bit of a Cabernet or Concorde grape wine flavor. The finish is fruity and earthy and maintains the sourness. I am still having trouble appreciating this style but I would probably try this again.

Had this on tap at Redbones his weekend hanging with David and Uncle Jimbo. Pour was dark garnet in color, faint low tan head that went away leaving me with a small Rorshach (sp?) pattern on top. I had three of these in a row, and picked up different aromas in almost every glass, ranging from a sour fruit/kriek-like one, to concord grapes, to some musty barnyard aromas. I have to say, I haven't had a beer this good in a while, and it was definitely a real pleasure. Medium mouthfeel and fine carbonation add in making the taste last. The balance of sweet to tart is perfection, and both sensations are not over the top. Main flavor notes were low malt backbone, with really just sweet and tart fruit notes (one minute kriek, the other grape). There was some lingering astringency in the finish. Outstanding.

Appearance – This one was almost black in color with a dark purple hue around the edges and a modest head.

Smell – The big, malty sourness was prominent in the nose. I couldn’t really pick up much else except that. It was primarily cherry.

Taste – The sourness was much lighter at the taste. It was well-mixed with some darkish malts and a light yeast flavor.

Mouthfeel – This one was light to medium-bodied with some subtle carbonation that tingled the tongue.

Drinkability – This isn’t my favorite style but they pulled it off well enough.

Vinous and sour aroma. I have a bit of apprehension about the first taste, beers that smell like this have a first sip like jumping into a cool pool on a hot day. Its a shock at first, but its nice once you're in. The first taste is actually quite refreshing. Grape pop, but with a sourness. Very dry finish. It has a thin sweetness like a sour candy just dusted with sugar. Mouthfeel is a bit watery, but I think if it was much thicker this beer would be less quaffable. I'm honestly shocked at how much I like this beer. I'm straining to keep myself from just pounding the whole bottle.

Edit: Is this the same stuff everyone else tried? Wow, no cloying sweetness at all. This seems to me like the closest a sour beer can come to a session brew. Crazy.

Great treat on draft at the Exton PA Drafting Room. Nice looking beer. Deep mahogany red with a light beige head that left scant but noticeable lacing. Smell is nice and funkified. Definately pick up the lactic sourness, but a distinct mustiness is present also that is also present as a flavor component. Something that I found ever so slightly amiss in this beer. Nice sweet component to the beer which balances the strong sourness, but that dirty kind of musty taste didn't sit right with me. I think I like a bit cleaner sourness in a Flander's Red. Perhaps it was just the rather strong sourness that makes me think its a bit musty. Decent mouthfeel. I wouldn't drink more than 2 or 3 of these, but all in all pretty good.

Presentation: Funky 11.2 fluid pounce swing top bottle. Cost $3.19 for the sample. Main label is per the BA Avatar in the Database. The top left of the label confirms that this is the 5% version brewed for the USA.

Appearance: Burgundy red with some polished chestnut brown hints. Off-white head that is a decent volume at first but settles to a thin covering, eventually resting as a broken covering with some halo-head character. Light lacing and average carbonation.

Nose: Funky dark fruits and a sharp aged burgundy character. Has a sweaty malt odor that is light in strength and which adds a balance to the sharp fruits, sour cherries, sour plums and a trait of farmyard lambic-ness in the back end.

Taste: Fantastic start, from the get go this is “in yer face” and makes no bones about its style. Tart Burgundy, sourness tingles twixt the malts and dark fruits. There is a very interesting balance between the caramel malts, and the fruity part of this brew which has a sharp funky sourness. Light yeast on the tongue with a mild textured sugar feel at the back end, yet all the while retaining a dry finish. Allegedly peppered with lambic yeast during the maturation process, it certainly exhibits some sour farmyard dimensions that make for an excellent Flemish Red/Brune with bags of flavors and layers to unwrap with your tongue.

Mouthfeel: Light in feel, but with a decent sour body that fills the gaps. Nice carbonation lends vitality and a vivacious feel to the sourness. Backbone is assisted by the caramel malts and grapey feel.

Drinkability: Bloody Heel, it is a long while since I had a Sour Flemish Ale that was this drinkable. What is lacks in mouthfeel, it more than makes up for with its killer Drinkability, and on a hot day, this is a real thirst quencher. Wet, Funky and Wild – just how I like ‘em.

Overall: I happened to have this on draft at the Spuyten Duyvil during the NYC BA “get together” on July 24 this year. It seemed to have a tad more complexity and bite on draft from memory, as well as being a little sourer. This is rather strange, because I find the exact opposite for the Duchesse. Regradless, the bottle is still great though, but lacks a little when compared to the draft version. Nevertheless, this is an accomplished Flemish Red style ale for sure, and well worth seeking out.

Smells like a stinky sour cherry lambic, looks like a dark brown ale. The color of red-tinged bark with a miniscule but solid white head, left a good snail trail of lacing behind. A smooth chocolatey-malt taste of black cherries, sugar, caramel and overripe sour berries. Great light and silky mouthfeel, very drinkable beer. Free of aftertaste and very refreshing, we drank Spuyten dry of this stuff.
