Blend of "Hollandish" Oud Brouin {around 3.5% alc/vol} , "Dortmunder" lager bockbier {around 6.5% alc/vol} and the "primeval" beer. The "primal" beer has been aged in traditional wooden barrels. It introduces lactobacilli, Brettanomyces and other microflora into the very complex blend.

had on tap at monk's cafe.

for the abv a superior flemish red. and the great thing is they server a pint that goes perfect with their duck sandwich. nose is tart with a significant doughiness quality to it and a nice balance of earth and wood. the smell of pipe tobacco in there a in the undertones... turgid malt has a stale sweetness to it. palate is a bit tart but equally so balanced with a quality of breadiness. earthy bitter and cherry tanin grippy. astonishing quality.

i would drink this regularly if i could.

Appearance: Poured a dark ruby/burgundy with a small white head which quickly receded wihtout any lacing.

Smell: Dark fruits hit the nose with a slight alcohol tone. Along with these tones arises minor malt tones and furthermore grapes

Taste: This light to medium bodied beer smacks the pallate with tart grape tones and a bit of slight sourness which follows with some caramel malt tones. Following these flavors comes a cherry/grape like burst with further tartness, dryness, and some yeast like flavors. Though all these flavors create something quite complex they go along smoothly with one another to produce something fantastic.

Mouthfeel: A nice light carbonation with a well rounded beer. This beer feels great in the mouth.

Drinkability: For such a wild taste, this beer just begs to be drank. All the flavors along with the right amount of carbonation makes this beer go down like candy.

I really love this style of beer. Although not quite as good as the Duchess but still a great representation of the beer style.
Mestreech poured to a beautiful ruby red with a slightly tannish head. Distinct berry aroma with a sharp tangy taste that seems to be a bit to tart but certainly a beer worth looking for.

Gulpener was my favorite brewery during my trips to the Netherlands, several years ago, but I don't remember sampling this Flanders Red ale. What a treat to find a Gulpener offering of any kind just a daytrip away from home.
This pours a clear and shimmering, dark mahogany body in the goblet, appearing garnet when held to the light. Small, ivory head quickly fades into collar and film lace.
Oak wood aromas hit the nose first, but I'm not certain this is barrel aged. Tart cherries quickly emerge, with a sourness that is suggestive of a flavored vinegar. There is also a distinct, barnyard chickenhouse yeasty presence that is very similar to a Lambic.
The mouthfeel is soft and satiny, with a medium body and low carbonation.
The taste is divine. Some toffeeish malt flavors around the edges envelop the essence of this nectar, the tart, fruitiness that is mouth puckering. Sour cherries seem to combine with green apples plucked from the tree several weeks before they're ripe. Woody tones are noted as well, suggestive of oak barrel aging. The yeast is more prominent in the nose than the taste, but offers a welcome earthiness. The complexities combine for a subtle and well balanced palate, that is exceptionally drinkable. This ale is not heavy, at all, and is anything but cloying. I could have several of these at a sitting. I don't mean to imply that this is not a sipping ale, for it most certainly is. I can't believe that I only bought a single bottle. Another beer road trip is definitely in the near future, in order to acquire a decent stock of this fine Flanders Red. Gulpener, by the way, is brewed in Netherlands' Limburg province, very near the Belgian border, so this one can lay a good claim to regional authenticity. An excellent experience here! I need more.

Drank in small flute glass.

Pours out smoothly with a small head which disapated shortly, leave nice lace on glass rim. Apears a reddish brown color.

At first it tastes of sour fruits, with a floral back, finishes with a oak barrel and extremely lite honey taste. super smooth.

smells of sour cherries and floral aromas, with an acidic tinge.

drinkability : could drink till I need a new liver

overall: one of my favorite sour reds out there

Presentation: Funky 11.2 fluid pounce swing top bottle. Cost $3.19 for the sample. Main label is per the BA Avatar in the Database. The top left of the label confirms that this is the 5% version brewed for the USA.

Appearance: Burgundy red with some polished chestnut brown hints. Off-white head that is a decent volume at first but settles to a thin covering, eventually resting as a broken covering with some halo-head character. Light lacing and average carbonation.

Nose: Funky dark fruits and a sharp aged burgundy character. Has a sweaty malt odor that is light in strength and which adds a balance to the sharp fruits, sour cherries, sour plums and a trait of farmyard lambic-ness in the back end.

Taste: Fantastic start, from the get go this is “in yer face” and makes no bones about its style. Tart Burgundy, sourness tingles twixt the malts and dark fruits. There is a very interesting balance between the caramel malts, and the fruity part of this brew which has a sharp funky sourness. Light yeast on the tongue with a mild textured sugar feel at the back end, yet all the while retaining a dry finish. Allegedly peppered with lambic yeast during the maturation process, it certainly exhibits some sour farmyard dimensions that make for an excellent Flemish Red/Brune with bags of flavors and layers to unwrap with your tongue.

Mouthfeel: Light in feel, but with a decent sour body that fills the gaps. Nice carbonation lends vitality and a vivacious feel to the sourness. Backbone is assisted by the caramel malts and grapey feel.

Drinkability: Bloody Heel, it is a long while since I had a Sour Flemish Ale that was this drinkable. What is lacks in mouthfeel, it more than makes up for with its killer Drinkability, and on a hot day, this is a real thirst quencher. Wet, Funky and Wild – just how I like ‘em.

Overall: I happened to have this on draft at the Spuyten Duyvil during the NYC BA “get together” on July 24 this year. It seemed to have a tad more complexity and bite on draft from memory, as well as being a little sourer. This is rather strange, because I find the exact opposite for the Duchesse. Regradless, the bottle is still great though, but lacks a little when compared to the draft version. Nevertheless, this is an accomplished Flemish Red style ale for sure, and well worth seeking out.

Had this on tap at kickbacks jacksonville, where else would I get to try something so rare? This beer was hyped up alot and I actually made a trip especially try this.. Usually when I do this and gaer this muvh about it, its a let down. The best thing was the appearance. Loved the dark body, almost stout like, with nice white fluffy head. Poured inna tulip glass it looked like a sundae. Great aromas and flavors of dark malts and a nice medium body. Not overly sour and I loved the balance of sweetness. Near Perfect!

What happens when an importer gains the power to make changes in a brew house thousands of miles away? We get a US version of Mestreechs Aajt, with no saccharin and 1.5% more alcohol by volume. Woo-hoo!

Presented in its own glassware (a wide and short flute), the beer has a mesmerizing dark ruby color to it with black edges. An off-white, tight, creamy lace crowns it and retains a decent level of lace throughout the experience.

Aroma is sweet & sour, like a pack of Smarties, with distinct black cherries and fruity berries.

Body is a bit light and the mouthfeel smooth, with a gentle tartness that segues into a sharp, lime and rind bitterness. As the bitterness comes down, the palate is treated to an amazing juicy black cherry flavor that dominates and clings to the upper palate. The black cherry / lime flavors are very refreshing and work well together (literally think "black cherry juice with lime squeezed into it"). As the beer warms, a thin caramel sweetness pulls through, followed by a lingering purple grape finish that's a bit vinous. All of this happens in mere seconds as the flavors are very quick and short lived, leaving an extremely clean, dry, more-ish finish.

Despite the quickness on the palate, this beer could quite possibly be one of my top picks of the year. It's highly refreshing and packed with simple, bold and clean flavors. Simply an amazing beer.

A - Deep reddish brown body, with some light glowing through the bottom of the pour. Big, sturdy head for a Flanders Red. Excellent retention.

S - Tons of vinegar and sour acidity present. Dry cask, tangy fruit, wine like. Mild spices balance the tart nose.

T - Huge sweet and sour bite. A big kick of tart fruit and tons of raw, sweet honey. This beer has character. The vinegar like acidity and sour fruit profile are well balanced by the sweetness. Mild dry red fruit lies in the finish.

M - This beer puckers the mouth some but is so clean and fresh. Some drying at the end but the tart-sweetness make you want more.

O - This beer is incredibly well rounded with all the right flavor notes. Simple yet complex. A true flavor explosion with the body and mouth to make you want to slam down a few more. Superb.

I’d only had this in bottles and have had a hard enough time finding it, but leave it to Monk’s to have it on tap. <insert appropriate prostrations, bowing and scrapings here>

This beer came a glowing orb of cranberry in a tulip glass. This was absolutely stunning, but there wasn’t a speck of head to be seen.

Smelled of raspberries and cranberries with a smooth buttery straw and a funky, musky snap.

Tasted of raspberries and tart tingly cranberries that were blended into a musky funky yeast and a buttery straw.

The mouth feel is light with a great swarm of bubbles that really helped stir up the tangy elements of the beer. Nice!

This one’s simply a must; bottle or tap. It’s really a delicious and appealing rendition of the style.

11.2 oz, squat, brown bottle with "ceramic" flip top. Ingredients: malt, water, hops, yeast.

This Flanders red (or is it a Flemish brown?) ale poured a clear, dark, coffee brown color with light brown foam that settled leaving suds on the surface but clinging to the glass a bit in clumps. The smell was sharp and tart and even a bit sour, with a wild, citrus and cherry aroma going on -- I love it. The taste was tart to sour but with an underlying sweetness especially towards the finish. There were woody notes and some wild funkiness, and a fruity, cherry flavor (where does that come from?), and a base maltiness under it all. A great flavor that really grew on me from the first time I tasted this beer. The mouthfeel was wonderfullly tart with medium body and modest carbonation. The malt and tart flavors lingered in the aftertaste. This is a really great beer, and when it is fresh, it is incredible. But when it is old (especially on tap), it loses its luster quickly.

Had on tap at The Beer Run in Charlottesville, VA ($11/16oz).

Appearance: Served in a 16 oz. pint glass (meh). Looked like cranberry juice with very little head to show.

Smell: Red wine vinegar, YUMMY!!!! I had a friend unfamiliar with the style take a whiff and he was quoted as saying "really? you're gonna drink vinegar?"

Taste: bye bye vinegar, hello flanders! Sweet, tangy and refreshing. It's a classic flanders style. Again, said friend quickly changed his tone when he tried ... he regretted not being open to trying it.

Overall: this was my first experience with this brew. Always up for sours/flanders/flemish yada yada, I'd order this beer again in a second.

Served on tap at Chicago's Local Option; admittedly, a few months ago. This has to be my favorite sour ale, and I believe the first of the style I ever tasted.

A: Pours a nice dark amber/brown - chocolatey. Half inch head that lingers a bit, unlike some other sours I have tried (especially krieks).

S: You can smell the sour, right up front. A little bit of funk as well, like an old cellar. Some cherry scent.

T: Complex. Sweet and funky. I get raisins, then the wood, with a little bit of funk near the end. Finishes sweet and tart, but not a lingering sourness.

M: Smooth as butter. No bite from the sour, low carbonation.

O: My favorite sour, and apparently rare in that I can't find it anywhere else any longer. (if any of you reading this know of a place in Chicago that has this beer for sale, and feel like sharing, let me know!)

reddish dark brown, lazy ascending prickles of white. Aromas of sour concord grape jelly and cranberry sauce. Big, pillowy mouthful of jammy fruit flavors and brown spices melt away in a tart, airy rush. Cocoa flavored tannins linger with the pulpy mass of fruit residue. What a complete beer. Hyperdrinkable, dark, bursting at the seams with fruit flavor, dry ... pure eloquence.

It's about time!

Had this on tap at Redbones his weekend hanging with David and Uncle Jimbo. Pour was dark garnet in color, faint low tan head that went away leaving me with a small Rorshach (sp?) pattern on top. I had three of these in a row, and picked up different aromas in almost every glass, ranging from a sour fruit/kriek-like one, to concord grapes, to some musty barnyard aromas. I have to say, I haven't had a beer this good in a while, and it was definitely a real pleasure. Medium mouthfeel and fine carbonation add in making the taste last. The balance of sweet to tart is perfection, and both sensations are not over the top. Main flavor notes were low malt backbone, with really just sweet and tart fruit notes (one minute kriek, the other grape). There was some lingering astringency in the finish. Outstanding.
