A half inch of khaki colored head rests on top of this deep brown colored beer. The clarity is light with haze. Light Brussels lacing is present. Aroma of dark malt with notes of pumpernickel. That pumpernickel flavor is dominant in the palate and gives it a bit of gentle bitterness at first. The mouth is fairly smooth and crisp.

Dated best before 4.27.14. So it's creeping on 4 months past.

Steam Engine – Amber Lager (5.5%) - Steamworks Brewing Co. (Colorado)
☆☆½

App: Pours a resilient copper with a tight two-finger head of small bubbles. Head dissipates fairly quickly, but doesn't totally evaporate. Lacing is loose, but present. Slightly hazy.

Smell: Malt totally dominates nose with a severe husk-like graininess. Smells unfermented, with a distinct cereal aroma. Hop bitterness faint, but not totally absent. Like having your head in a grain bag.

Taste: Tastes slightly over boiled. Husky astringency noticeable on the first sip. Not a whole lot of character. Malt body is light, slightly sweet, and very grainy. Was expecting more caramelized notes based on the color. Overall, this beer is fairly clean on the palate, but it does have some lingering grain astringency that's a little off putting. That being said, the pale malt character that dominates this brew is nice if you like that flavor. Hops bitterness is minimal, with no discernible taste. Cracker like toastiness, slightly sweet, and somewhat astringent. Reminiscent of Kentucky Common without the esters.

Mouth: Light bodied, right for style. Less carbonation that your typical lager. No lingering sensation, save a slight, lifting bitterness long after the swallow.

Home tasting, 12oz can into Tulip Glass. 5/3/14.

amber lager, the can says something like "quite possibly the best american amber lager in the world", which is a rather bold statement, but maybe they arent that far off. its richer than most, rust colored and heady, with a nose of copper and nuts and clean lager yeast, exceptionally nutty really, with more going on than most. the flavor too is quite robust. malty as heck but not sweet in the slightest, frothy expansive feel makes it seem big for a lager, and the finish is clean. properties of a nut brown in here, protein heavy and a little chocolate malt maybe, but its powered by big amber malt that hasnt left much sugar behind. sessionable because of its cleanness, and its not boring. a well made beer from steamworks, maybe its time i revisit some of their brands. its been awhile and this was pretty solid for what it is.

Clear, copper-colored body with an initially thick, white head that gradually fades to a thin foamy layer. Light roasted grain scent with a touch of mown grass. Light malt character with a corresponding balance of hop bitterness. Medium-light body, smooth feel, crisp and dry finish.

A decent lager with a good balance of malt and hop characteristics. Nothing earth-shattering but an overall likable thirst quencher.

Small light tan head settles into a thin but decent lacing above a crystal clear bright copper colored lager.

Light aroma consisting of citrus to piney hops and a bready to caramel malts.

The taste is on the lighter side with light roasted caramel malts with just a hint of the citruspine hops coming through.

A light dryish aftertaste with just a hint of malts sticking around on this light to medium bodied drink.

A light taste, not bad but not a lot there either, I think I'll look for something with a little more snap to it.
