Colorado Kölsch – Kölsch (4.86%) – Steamworks Brewing Co. (Colorado)
☆½

App: Extremely pale, with a slight straw yellow in the center. Looked almost like water when poured. Okay one finger head that goes soapy pretty fast with big bubbles, but boasts some retention. Even lighter than a many AALs, which is not something I typically expect from an ale.

Smell: Grainy and uninspired. Slight chalky smell. Not a lot to say.

Taste: Totally bland, but not “bad” per se. Essentially a better crafted american lager. Slight hop bitterness and a little bit of malt, but neither is prominent or complex. Lazy.

Mouth: Decently carbonated. Light, no lingering sensation.

Home tasting, 12oz can into Stem Glass. 1/2/14. (728 characters)

This pour was a pale straw yellow almost urine color with a weak head at best with similarly weak carbonation. The head is thin and provides a sparse lace. The aroma is nearly nonexistent and only toward the end of the pint can I detect any hint of beer scent, and even then it is generic. There is a dryish hop finish on a bland intial taste. Toward the end with a determined tongue and nose, I can detect slight hints of grass and grain. This is medium bodied and lacks a requisite crispness for this style. This brew was too much work to only moderately enjoy. (563 characters)

Clear straw yellow color with a fluffy white head, decent retention and lacing. Biscuity/cracker aroma, very little else. Taste is grainy, light malty, just a slight hop bitterness present. Mouthfeel was pretty light, but fairly normal for the style. Overall, this one really didn't appeal to me, probably wouldn't buy again. (325 characters)

A small to medium white head settles into a thin lacing above a clear straw golden colored kolsch.

Some sourish grains, very light citrus, and a little sweetness in the aroma.

Light citrus lemonish hops with an almost grassy or straw taste coming through.

A dryish aftertaste that seems to have some light bittering aspects to it on this well carbonated light bodied beer.

Light but decent tasting, worth a nod if you like beers of this style. (447 characters)

Steamworks- Colorado Kolsch

A- Light clear bright yellow with a small soapy white head.
S- Light sweet bready malt with a sweet touch of butter.
T- Sweet malt, bready buttery and light earthy dry hay/ straw hops.
M- Light and watery up front with a sweet malty body. Dry earthy hops poke through while this finishes off sweet and malty.

Overall- Easy drinking and refreshing. (377 characters)

I had this one at a Mexican restaurant at Denver's airport.

A - Crystal clear and solid looking with a thin white cap that left a lot of lace on the pint glass and showed some really nice retention. My fiance thought that this one "just looked like Bud Light," but then I pointed out that appearance is more than just color and clarity. She's used to seeing something dark or cloudy in my glass, and thought it strange that I would order something so clear and yellow. Admittedly, kolsch isn't the most exciting looking style, but the lace left on this glass was really pretty.

S - Light summer fruits (honeydew mellon), with some floral hops. Very fresh and summery...like girly shampoo.

T - Again, summer fruits and flower garden flavors. More assertive than the weakish nose, but still pretty mellow.

M - Light and fluffy with a mellow carbonation that matches the gentle nose and flavor perfectly. Soft.

D - Other than a hefe, you really can't beat a good kolsch for hot weather drinkability. I had a spicy venison sausage and this really slaked my thirst, but was a little too gentle to stand up to the peppers. Session beer fo sho. (1,142 characters)

The pour yields a beautiful light golden draught with a half finger of white head that quickly retreats for no lacing...

I'm picking up some grass and citrus in the aroma but nothing else
honestly it kind of smells like the yellow fizzy stuff

Slight hops and malt hits the palate.... it actually tastes like the big beer as well..not bad, its just nothing.

Light body like water with a soda pop carbonation

Ok this beer is not worth more words but I have to hit the minimum so here it is. If you are looking for any sort of flavor do not hit this. Save your money for keystone light as it is the same to my mouth. (617 characters)

Clear bright gold in color with white fluffy head that rises a good inch above the brew and decides to hang out for a while, slowly leaving a nice lacing.
Aroma is dominated by fruity esters as well as a little peppercorn or coriander-like spice. A very slight grainy aroma peeks through these fruit esters.
Flavor contains very little of the aroma. It is thinly sweet and has a little bread crust yeasty flavor. A slight hint of sulfur or SMS that is a little weird for an ale, but I guess it's kind of a cross style.
Moderate to high carbonation helps to sell the crisp flavor of this beer as well as keep any sweetness from becoming cloying.
Drinkable from a purely "sex in a canoe" standpoint but without much to draw you in for a second. This is just flavorful enough to satisfy craft drinkers while being light enough to convince macro drinkers. (852 characters)

Had this on tap at kinfolks.

Poured light golden with less than 1/2"of white head. Average head rention & lacing

S: Slight citric hops & bready malt

T: Lemony & grassy hops up front. Slight grainyness & lemon tarts follow as this warms. Finishes slighly lemony & floral with dryness

MF: Spritzy & very light, not thin for the abv

Drank too easy, a little more fruittyness & this would be spot-on as a Kolsch IMO. One that needs to be enjoyed when fresh (468 characters)

Woodychandler comes through again with this beer. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a light golden color with a 1/2 inch head, lots of carbonation. Smell is malty, grassy. Taste is crisp, grains, malts, light and easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a decent beer. (286 characters)

Look: Clear, pale straw. two fingers of bright fluffy white head dissipates slowly. No lacing.

Smell: Light tinny hoppyness that exemplifies so many great German beers. A little wheat, a little bready malt

Taste: Bready malt up front, light tinny bitter finish. A little lemon zest in there. Crisp and refreshing.

Feel: Really light body. Medium Dry finish. Pretty watery

Overall: Not really indicative of the style. It drinks more like a watered down Pilsner. Meh. It is a crushable sixer that would be pretty good for yard work but there are much better options. (568 characters)

12 oz can pours an uber light yellow color with a fizzy cap of white head. Poor retention and little lace.

Nose is light and grainy, very faint....not much going on here, nothing offensive either though.

A little more on the flavor with a light floral hop and decent little zest from the kolsch yeast. Clean and fresh, it goes down easy as intended. The yeast doesnt have as much influence as most in this style, but you go do worse for a 12-pack chillin outdoors. (466 characters)

On tap at steamworks, the color got me really excited, straw yellowish. Smell was decent and faintly sweet could not pick out anything in particular. Taste was a little sweet for the style.

Overall its not a bad brew but there isn't anything that is very special in this one. Would drink again but I'm not going to be hunting it down by any means. (349 characters)

Poured in my stange glass (yay, I like to use the glasses that I don't often use). I poured this into a pint glass also and I must implore you to use a stange glass when drinking this beer, or you will miss out A LOT.

Straw yellow color with a good head that leaves trails of lacing on the glass. I've never seen a kolsch with this good of an appearance.

Smell is hugely grassy with a lemony citrus twang. I never used to be a fan of kolschs, but the smell drive me wild. I want to go mow a lawn so that I can come in and whiff this and be in heaven. I'd like to give a higher score here, but I'll balance it out later. It's not quite a 4.5

Taste is just clean refreshing kolsch. The malts are very pale and have a citrusy twang. There is that slight sourness that one gets from citrus that is left on the tongue a tad.

I'll add points to the mouthfeel here, but the beer just isn't as crisp as I would like it to be. If this beer was more crisp the drinkability could even be higher. However, the flavors are on and this is a pretty decent kolsch. Give it a try. (1,068 characters)
