Had this guy at the Hood River Hops Fest.

appearance - orange with good lacing that lingers

smell - bountiful fresh hops!

taste - wow, so smooth, so hoppy

mouthfeel - medium to full body, very smooth with some boldness

overall - one of my top fresh hop beers of all time and of the 2011 hop fest. well done.

This, along with Killer Green from Double Mountain, was my favorite DIPA at the annual wet hop festival in Hood River.

The beer pours a light orange color, with very good head retention and excellent lacing. On the nose this beer has an intense aroma of pine and citrus, with a hint of leafy tobacco. Very, very impressive. On the palate one gets a huge blast of pine and bitter citrus. However, the flavors are much better preportioned/balanced then the Killer Green, with a bit of malt to help with the hops. The beer still comes across as very light and dry, though you can tell the abv. is in the 8% to 9% range. For all that, this beer is quite drinkable, and I would love it if this beer were more readily available. This beer reminds me very much of the Tricerahops from Ninkasi, but with a bit more earthiness and leafiness from the wet hops.

An absolute gem from Big Horse Brewing. I had no idea they were capable of making beers of this quality, not having had anything that stood out the one time I visited the brewpub. This was an absolute revelation. Excellent beer.

Edit from 10/2/11. Have been told that Big Horse makes this every year during fresh hop season. Unfortunately, it's fairly limited and it's only available at the brewpub. The 2011 version is better than ever, although the alcohol is now up to 11.1% according to the specs at the brewpub. Was also told that they use only simcoe hops for this beer, which given the outrageous aroma, is easy to believe. Just an altogether fantastic dipa.
