Tried on tap at Belmont Station as part of a Barley Brown feature night. This was one of the four beers in the Sled Wreck flight. It was apparently the base Sled Wreck fermented with a Belgian yeast strain instead of their house yeast.
A: Pours a murky amber body, like the base beer. Unlike the base, it arrives with a well-formed off-white cap that retains well for at least another 20 minutes. Substantial curtains during sips.
S: Banana and coriander are immediately noticeable; I overheard a remark that this was reminiscent of a hefeweizen. I can certainly see it, though the base beer is no slouch. Its caramel-plum-chocolate nature works well with the yeast contributions.
T: As in the nose, banana is prominent, though the spice seems muted. While the caramel and plum flavors come out, they don't carry the same sweetness of the base beer; overall, this variant feels drier. Unfortunately, that exposes the hop profile quite a bit, and its earthy / dirty bitterness is poorly integrated here.
M: I like the dryness, but I don't care for the aftertaste. The carbonation is high, which is unusual for a barleywine, but it is not altogether unpleasant.
D: I thought it was an interesting experiment, and it was interesting to have it side by side with the base beer. However, it really needs some tweaks to bring out the best characteristics of this yeast.
