On tap the Bier Stein the other day.

The beer pours a fairly viscuous, blackish brown color very good head retention and light, coco colored lacing. This beer has the look of one that has seen some fairly signficant barrel aging. The nose shows some nice bourbon notes as well, along with some noticeable espresso, dark chocolate, and a hint of vanilla and dry citrus. The flavor profile replicates the nose pretty closely, but as you would expect from anything made by BB, there is a goodly dollop of hoppy bitterness in this well made beer as well. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, and the alcohol is very well integrated into the flavor profile (no real heat or heaviness from the 10% abv.).

A very nice beer, no doubt, but I'm wondering if it might improve with a bit more time in the barrel. I thought this beer a bit rough around the edges, but otherwise this is another solid effort from the folks at BB.

Appearance- Was served with a thick and beautiful head which had excellent retention. The head is a dark beige/mocha while the body is an opaque, dark chocolate black. No lacing yet but it looks as if some will be left. Hints of sheeting around the the top of the foam. Lacing that is left turns out to be sheeting.

Nose- This is delicious and it might be even better when it opens up more. Dominant roasted notes. Coffee and dark chocolate. Well rounded and quite inviting. Hints of raisin and cherry. This should be a good one if it reflects the nose. After a few moments, coffee and roasted notes become even more present.

Taste- Reflective of the nose but a little more sour and a bit more bitter. Lots of dark chocolate, lots of espresso, bitter coffee. Nice flavor profile but I wish there were more complexity. A good beer, pretty much a solid one but compared to all the world class Imperials I've had, this is just above average. Slight spice on the finish (think cinnamon). Lots of balance and integration. Some oatmeal. Very nice malt bill that hides its complexity for accessibility. Some hints of smoke as well.

Mouthfeel- Between medium and heavy bodied with a slight grittiness. Some syrupy aspects and a good amount of carbonation for the style. That is neither here nor there. Reminiscent of Old Rasputin.

Drinkability- Fairly easygoing. No hint of any heat. Perhaps a little overpriced but not by much.

Overall- Solid beer. Worth a try but it won't wow you if you had a number of Imperial stouts. Probably would buy again if it were cheaper.
