A very good imperial IPA. The smell of the beer is inviting even before the first sip. I would recommend food with this beer as it is powerful(8.8%) on an empty stomach. The color is outstanding and the beer is very drinkable. I think most it not all hoppy beer enthusiasts would really enjoy this beer.

On the light to median of the color spectrum for a DIPA, it's a thick, opaque dark yellow leaning toward orange. It grows a sizable whitish head that sticks around and drops plenty of nice, patchy lacing.
The nose has lots of tropical fruits and citrus with some pith and zest. There's a dry, grassy quality to the malts. Unfortunately, there's also an off-putting funk that's quite strong. It's not skunky, exactly, though close to that sort of a smell. It's really out of place and mars a good aroma, especially with a nice candied sort of sweetness working with the bitterness.
The sweetness translates, and all the juicy tropical and citrus notes are also in the flavor, reminiscent of dried candied apricots and orange. Orange peel and a bit of something raw add a hint of pith. The grassiness is lighter, while somewhat more biscuity comes out in the malts. It could be a little more on the hop-heavy side, as the balance swings a little malty overall for the style, but this is tasty stuff. Alcoholic heat sneaks in and lingers under every sip, warming as it does.
The body is medium with a nice heft and a creaminess under the big, crisp bite.

Poured a medium copper hue with a one finger frothy white head. There was very good retention and lacing.

The smell featured a balmy citrus hop and a hefty pale malt.

The taste featured a robust orange and piney hop and a full doughy and sweet pale malt.

The mouthfeel was typical of the style.

Overall a well made and tasty DIPA.

Nose: Hops, duh. Citrus and pine resin immediately noticeable. Hints of alcohol poke through. Smells very green and is enticing. Sweet highlights like sugary lemon rind.

Appearance: Honey gold with a strong ruby inflection. Forms a big, ivory head which lets up fairly quickly but settles around .75 inches pretty well. A little cloudy, even at warmer temperatures, but clear enough. It laces well.

Taste & Feel: The first thing that hit me was actually fruitiness. The hops build quickly, and get big, but not overwhelming. A light alcohol heat lifts towards the nose as the bitterness digs in. It almost approaches sour as the hops and alcohol start to balance. A very mellow, raisiny sweetness smooths it out. It's not super-carbonated and feels smooth and substantial.

Overall: Complex subtleties make this a very worthwhile beer.

On-tap at Steelhead Burlingame

A: The pour is a murky golden orange with a white head and some mild lacing.

S: Starts off quite grassy with a bit of body odor to make things interesting. There's a strong aroma of fruit juice, especially pineapple and papaya juice.

T: Luckily, the flavor lacks the B.O. qualities present on the nose (Hurrah!). This tastes like a tropical fruit punch: mango, papaya, passion fruit, and pineapple fruit juices blended together. There's a moderate bitterness, but this is on the sweet side with just a touch of grassy hops.

M: Medium bodied with a moderate carbonation and a hint of bitterness on the finish.

D: The flavor was pretty good, but the nose was definitely off-putting, at least to an extent. I had some trouble getting past that initially.

A: Pours copper with a very short white head.

S: Citrus peel, orange and berries in the nose.

T: Orange, grapefruit peel, berry, different, but not super interesting. It tastes good, though.

M: Medium bodied, typical IPA carbonation level.

O: Recommended if you can find it. I'm assuming it's only available in Burlingame.
