Served on tap at the brewpub.
Appearance: Dark brown-twinged crimson, transparent at the edges. Topped by a healthy dark tan head that receded to a small layer of bubbles. Specks of foam and such were left on the glass.
Smell: Pruny and raisiny malts with caramel undertones.
Taste: Uber-sweet caramel and fruity malts. Presence of alcohol on the finish. Maltoliciousness. I detected some hints of smokiness and earthy-type flavors as well, but they were lurking in the background.
Mouthfeel: Thickly medium bodied.
Drinkability: Bill Madden sez this stuff will improve with age. I can't wait to see what a few months in the basement will do to this as it's damn fine already. It's maybe a tad overly fruity at it's current age (about a week or so old), so maybe some aging will add some welcome depth. Very drinkable now and oh-so hearty.
Other: Winner of a Silver Medal at the 2004 GABF competition.

Had this on tap at the brewpub. This had a dark brown body with reddish highlights in the light. The head was a decent size and tan and left a good bit of lace in the glass. Aroma was of dark fruits with and under lying caramel sweetness. There are also notes of earthiness and alcohol in the mix. The taste was of dark fruity sweetness with a bit of caramel to it. There was a good amount of earthy hops present and a slight smokiness. The after taste was fruity sweet and had a slight alcohol bite to it. Mouthfeel was medium to full and had a sticky sweetness about it. Great drinkability here as the sweetness never becomes cloying. I would go there just to get this beer, this is very tasty stuff.

Enjoyed on-tap at the brewpub. Presented in a pint glass.
Smallish 1/2" light tan head above this translucent dark amber/light brown brew. Laces nicely, with a rich grain aroma, and hints of alcohol. Taste follows the nose very nicely, no false advertising here. Mouthfeel could be improved a bit with a tad more carbonation, but this is splitting hairs for a brew so easily drinkable. Nice example of the style.

Sampled on tap at the brewpub. Deep brownish, approaching black with some deep reddish notes on the fringes. Creamy tan head that lasted indefinitely. Enticing, rich malty sweet aroma. Flavors of intense rich & well-blended malts. Deep malt blend of caramel & alder. Some mild fruit blending with roasted, but mildly sweet nutty malt. Alcohol makes its presence felt in this somewhat dry, delicious brew. Full bodied & meaty with a bit of warming alcohol. Deep roasted, smoked, complex malt profile is impossible to deny. Chewy. Downright Delicious.
