Sierra Madre Brewing Co. is located at the base of the foothills in the small town of Sierra Madre, just east of Pasadena. It's situated at the town's restaurant and shopping area. The brewpub is a long, narrow establishment with 4-5 tables outside and about ten tables inside. The bar runs down the right side once you enter. The place isn't long on ambience, sporting a utilitarian look that basically is for people who are only coming in long enough for a bite and a pint.
SMBC offers five house beers: a pilsner, ice house lager, hefeweizen, red ale and bock. Guest beers were Guinness, PBR, Hansa, Stone Arrogant Bastard, Rogue Brutal Bitter and Craftsman Orange Grove, with Chimay Red in bottles and assorted ciders and non-alcoholic brews. I had a sampler of the five house beers. Each sample was 7.5oz. and the cost was $7.50. By in large, the house beers were average, with the red ale topping the tasting and the hefeweizen bringing up the rear.
The food consisted mainly of burgers and sandwiches, all priced around the $7 to $10 range. I ordered a fish sandwich which came with fries and was quite large and pretty good. The wait staff consisted of one waitress who was friendly and attentive even with a steady flow of patrons.
Sierra Madre Brewing Co. is a small brewpub that has a certain "mom & pop owned" charm to it. I'd probably go back to get a pint of that Craftsman Orange Grove or their red ale and something to eat.
