Bottle from The Big Dooper. Cheers!
From a bottle into a snifter
Described as a white oaked barleywine
APPEARANCE: Pours a one finger, medium looking, off-white head with good retention. Mahogany red in color, hazy, with medium levels of carbonation. Head fades to a full foam cap and sticks to the top of the glass. A half wisp and ring remain leaving decent dots of lacing down the glass. Good looking, darker barleywine.
SMELL: Caramel, raisins with other dark fruit notes and some leather initially. Light toffee with some grapefruit and bubble gum notes as well. Spicy alcohol in the back. Decent nose.
TASTE: Caramel, raisins and dark fruit up front again. Leather is in there too, with a big finish of spicy alcohol, dark fruit sweetness, bubble gum, leather and melon sweetness. A hint of grapefruit bitterness comes through as well. Pretty flavorful.
PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. A little fizzy and light on the palate, goes down okay with a bit of a scratch at the swallow and finishes slightly sticky. A bit of a burn and some heat lingers.
OVERALL: Pretty decent brew. A bit too much leather perhaps, and it could use a creamier feel, but this is a solid effort from a brewery that is, for me at least, rather hit or miss. The oak component could be a little more present as well. Still, this is one worth checking out if you get the chance. Cheers Doopie.
