Deep and dark in colour (yet still somewhat brownish) with a beige head that is quite small, yet very persistent and attractive to the eye because of its rocky texture. Great lace.

Smells very much like cacao, but with a sweet chocolate-like undertone to it. A rather dry, esprosso-like roastiness brings the nose into balance with the help of a refreshing, sweet fruity note. Little hops noticable, but enough to make for a minimal herbal contribution.

Very dry and bitter when tasted, with much less sweetness and a clear trace of flowery hops towards and in the finish. Lots of burned qualities and a slight sour/acidic twist that truly adds to the overall taste. A clean malty finish with a hint of vanilla and an even drier aftertaste, a faint hoppy recollection and something like a woody impression. Very bitter with a slight buzz from the alcohol.

Mouthfeel is somewhat smooth, but also moving into a thinner direction (which I personally like very much). Carbonation is perfect: both fine and strong. Medium body.

An outstanding and mature stout, very dry and burned.

Best by September 2014.

Served in a Sam Smith imperial pint.

A - Mostly black with deep ruby edges and small off white cap that left OK lacing.

S - Dark spfruit and mild roast. A really nice balance between the two. I'm wishing I'm poured in a more aroma flattering glass.

T - Roast character takes the front seat and some dark fruit notes round it off, just a hint of cocoa powder as well.

M - drying dissipating finish.

O - A solid bear, great transition for the Guiness drinker. Only knocked for the diacetly and mediocre head retention.

From bottle. Uncapping releases a pronounced dark chocolate aroma followed by expresso and dark roasted grains. The sweet and inviting aroma has some burnt toast too, but minimal burnt grains in the flavor. Rcih flavor with near full body and near medium carbonation. Lingering flavor of dark roasted grains, coffee and a hint of dark chocolate.

O: recommended.

Yes, it sounds pretentious but I'm drinking this from a goblet-flute glass.

The beer pours out pitch black and there's a nice thick head that fades slowly.

Nose is subtle chocolate with a whiff of roasted light coffee. It's a very good balance between the two. I'm looking at the bottle as I write this and I've decided to name the logo of the man with the hammer Bart Jopenkerk, of the Clan Jopenkerk.

Bart Jopenkerk feels that there's a thick, milky velvet mouthfeel to this stout. It tastes true to its scent: a light chocolate coffee with roasted elements. Disclaimer: I'm partial to stouts so I may be biased but this beer is good. I like it and so does Bart Jopenkerk.

Bottle drunk at In De Wildeman in Amsterdam.

Again big pillowy head fades semi slowly with tons of lacing, very dark beer with some light sneaking through.

Nose nice dark malts, cocoa powder, light roast and faint roasted coffee, just bordering over roasted char but not quite there, which also brings a salty soy sauce character, layers of dark malts, besides the cocoa also black malt and roast, etc.

Taste lots of choc, dark choc, cocoa powder, nice melting Swiss choc, bitter roast and almost soy sauce bitterness, light caramel and toffee too, quite dry and bitter overall. Touch of a metallic twinge and very light acrid. A nice bitter earthy like hop comes through as well. Light oats maybe, chewy and bitter profile lingering on the finish, fairly dry but sticky, little coffee coming through on the finish with the roast and plenty of dark malt flavors lingering. Long lingering Belgian choc flavor.

Mouth is fuller bod, decent carb. Light warming booze.

On-tap at Café t' Arandsnest, Amsterdam, Netherlands

A: The beer is essentially jet black in color - traces of brown are visible near the edges of the glass when it is held up to a bright light. It poured with a finger high foamy light tan colored head that has excellent retention properties and hardly died down.
S: Light aromas of dark malts are present in the nose.
T: The taste has flavors of dark roasted malts with hints of coffee beans and a slight amount of carbonation.
M: It feels light-bodied and a little airy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: The light-bodied nature of this beer makes it very very easy to drink but isn't very flavorful.

Bought this at the Bierkoning in Amsterdam. Poured into a Jopen stemglass. Best before 03.10.14.

Pitch black body with visible carbonation and a fine bubbled two finger beautiful beige head that reduces slowly to a not too thin layer leaving great lacing.

Smell is chocolate, a little yeast, toffee, milkchocolate, vanilla, plums

taste is immediately bitter, espresso, no sweetness, little chocolate and aftertaste is slightly sour.

Creamy foam, quite a lot carbonation for a stout, bit watery feel to it.

Taste is a slight disappointment compared to the almost perfectly complex nose. The appearance is good too, but the mouthfeel could be more creamy and less carbonated as this is a stout.

I will let this warm up a bit and eat some dark, fair trade, locally produced, artisan, blablabla chocolate in the meantime. Well the chocolate enhances the flavor of this stout like any other, but the two do not really harmonize due to the sourness in the beer.

All in all, this beer could be improved but it is still good.
