Originally reviewed on September 11, 2006. Pour of mahogany-tinted red, with fringes of basketball. Head of creamy ivory. Faint malt and pizza sauce aroma. Served ice cold. There’s no carbonation in this beer, it’s becoming to be a trademark of this brewery. Maybe I could at least convince them to serve their beer on oxygen. There really isn’t flavor here, just some dryness that acts as such and there could maybe be a hint of hop sugars. Ick. I think they distilled the tannins from the river water and added it to this thing they attempt to call beer. Palate is exceptionally revolting. It has a painful scorching dryness that scours the tongue and burns the roof of your mouth. Garbage. They really need to go out of business and stop embarassing craft beer.

This beer pours light amber color, with a passable creamy head. The bouquet is weak, with hints of ice tea, perhaps due to eponymous tannins (?). My tasting of this beer was during a particularly warm day (yes, the UP of MI can get warm!). Thus, the beer went down easy, almost too easy. I believeas a general rule, part of the role of hops in any beer is to provide the punctuation between drinks. If that is the case, then this beer is a run-on sentence. It is a little like drinking malted ice tea, it has a fleeting raspberry-lemon finish. I agree with the earlier reviewer who bemoans this offering's lack of carbonation. Despite its shortcomings, however, there is something likeable about the beer. Perhaps it is due to the fantastic setting (Tahqamenon Falls state park) or that it was oddly refreshing at the end of a hot summer day, which is why I give it a passing drinkability score.
