Poured from 500mL green bottle into a tumbler. Bottled 7/15/22, best by 11/15/22.
Appearance: pours a hazy medium yellow hue with a thin finger of frothy white foam. Head is pretty low but otherwise nice!
Smell: fresh and yeasty with a light maltiness. I really dig the zwickl aroma! There was a hint of skunkiness when I opened the bottle but it dissipated quickly.
Taste: malty and yeasty with a bit of hop bite at the end. The flavor seems a bit unbalanced at the end, but in general it’s a tasty beer.
Mouthfeel: medium body with a big carbonation and a lovely creaminess.
Overall: this beer isn’t perfect - I feel like the finish is a little rough - but it is super refreshing. Good stuff!

Schwechater Zwickl
,5l green glass bottle, €1,69 @ Julius Meinl Am Graben on 02.01.14
"Abgefüllt Am: 12.11.2013 / Mindestens Haltbar Bis: 12.03.2104"
... so 52 days old but still 69 before best by date.
Notes: Very hazy with yeast. Straw-gold body appears almost lemon-yellowish because of the yeast. Massive, rocky bright white head. Head retention and lacing are very good. Surprisingly not skunked in green glass! Aroma is floral with malt sweetness. Yeast is not really noticeable. Flavor displays grainy malt that's sweetish but really well balanced by floral hops with an herbal background. Round with an infused, very firm bitterness. Finishes almost as it started, just going from "bold" to "polished/smooth" in the finish. Body feels medium. Soft, fluffy carbonation that gently bristles. Almost creamy; smooth. Bright, flavorful, clean. Remarkably drinkable.
Also vom fass @ Zum Leupold, .3l for €3,90
Notes: The bartender told me that this was new on tap, I assume meaning fresh. Cloudly like a weizen, similar color. Tighter head. Retention is very good, and lacing is just as good or better. Clean fresh malt with noble hops (apologies for not doing better but they're cutting limes behind the bar, and smoking always throws me off). The flavor offers balanced malt and light hop with some minor yeast flavor. Firm bitterness. Dry finish with some lingering malt, yeast, hops and gentle bitterness. Fresh. Alive. Drinkable!

Jein...
A fairly average Zwickel. Grapefruit juice like color with thin and short lasting head, aroma full of biscuit, zest, dry herbs. Biscuit malt dominates flavors, a little bit of lemon and dry bread crust in background. Flavors are bit messy but nevertheless interesting. Mouthfeel is clean and would go well with a summer cook out.

I found this in the fresh juices section of a large Vienna supermarket. It comes in a green half liter bottle with an elongated neck, a pull top cap and a red, gold and white label. No ingredient info. Best before 10/13/06, it was bottled nine weeks earlier - a bit long for a Zwickl, but OK. I opened it on 10/2/06.
Pours a very cloudy very light whitish yellow hue under a one finger off-white head with good retention and generating a couple lines of lace. The nose is crisp and hoppy, almost metallic, with a touch of lemon. The mouth is light and very prickly. Stark dry espresso bitter hits from the start, surprisingly strong adn bitter for such a pale beer. Not much in the way of malt, and the lemon is elusive. Just raw espresso bitter flavor. It's interesting, but way too one-sided. Not particularly good, either.

Hazy orange appearance, beautiful foam, beige, compact.
Delicate malt in the smell, breadcrust, yeast, quite pleasant. And there is also some hop. Delicate and inviting.
Same for the taste, quite yeasty and breadcrust. Even some light spicy notes (orange peel? Anise?). In any case, good.
In the aftertaste there is a comebacking of the hoppy bitterness, and then again delicate malt and yeast. Again a little spicy (pepper?).
