Had a couple beers here in Sept 21. I chose to drink outside, didn’t even see inside but the vibe of the street was pretty sweet. Hacker contends for my fav Bavarian brewer, so expect just a few beers that are extraordinary. One of the best places in Munich.

This one of my favourite spots in Munich apart from the Weisses Bräuhaus. Here has a very good selection of many Hacker-Pschorr beers and some tasty food. I had the Schweinshaxe which was delicious. Service was good and price was pretty fair. Highly recommended.

The last stop in Munich before taking a night train to Amsterdam. Hacker's "other" beer hall, though unlike Der Pschorr, I wasn't here to eat; a beer or two on the patio and I'm out. In this case, I made the right choice.

The Hackerhaus offers more of its beer than at nearby Der Pschorr. 11 total beers, some on-tap, some from the bottle, including a brewmaster pilsner, dunkel, dunkelweizen, dunkelbock, kellerbier, sternweisse, and two low alcohol beers. Half-liter pours are still a bit expensive even for Munich at €4.30-4.50. Appropriate glassware is attempted here, beers aren't served ice cold, and the bee is very good, three qualities that I have come to expect from Munich's beer halls.

I killed some additional time here not just from drinking beer, but running into a small group of friendly Spainiards and a Venezuelan who lived in Munich. "In Munich, you have to drink helles!", one joked. Before I knew it, I had a train to catch, but I will walk away from the Hackerhaus not only with another fond memory, but a place to visit again shall I return to Munich.

This review is from my last visit to Munich during Oktoberfest, on 24SEP07. Unsure why I hadn't input it back then, but...

Had just left a bookstore at the Marienplatz with daughter Caitlin and we were headed back to The Fest. Hunger got in the way, though, and we happened to be near the Altes Hackerhaus. I'd been by it before, but never in. That's now changed...

Coming from the Marienplatz, the Haus is about 1/2-way down Sendlinger Strasse on the right, heading towards the newspaper district of the city. The facade is ornate, faded white stone, with a large archway framing big, green doors. An elaborate wrought-iron sign hangs above the door bidding you enter for some fine food and drink. A Hacker stube has been here since 1838, though earlier brewing operations have long since moved elsewhere. Along the street are a dozen tables of varying sizes, with large umbrellas shading the diners. Entering the large arched doorway, you are plunged into an old-world labyrinth of rooms, with dark wood tables and chairs spread about the various dining areas. The light colored walls are festooned with antique bier memorabalia, antlers, knick-knacks and fading pictures of brewers (and quaffers) long past. The lighting is low and incandescent, lending a warm feel to the place. There is a small courtyard in the rear for additional outdoor dining, and the stairway leading to the basement restrooms has walls adorned with fantastic tin bier emblems and ads.

Caitlin and I opted to dine outside, in the front. Service was typical Germanic efficiency, with the basic amount of friendliness thrown in. I had the pleasure of downing a great Maibock, while there was also their Helles, Hefeweizen, Pils and OFest available. A platter of Würst and kraut hit the spot for Caitlin, while a plate of superb Spätzle filled me up nicely.

Altes Hackerhaus is a great, and often overlooked, oasis of good food and bier right in the center of the city. I'd recommend a visit if possible. I'll be back.

Zum Wohl!!

This restaurant on Sendlinger Strasse, is only a few minutes walk from Marienne platz and the Town Hall, or a few minutes walk from the Sendlinger Tor U-Bahn station.
It is more of a restaurant than bar, but the food is very good and good service, and whilst a little more costly than some places, worth it for the cosy interior, good food and service. The restaurant area is several small interconnected rooms with 4-6 tables in each, the walls covered in historic photos of Munich and the Hacker brewery and its history. An English Menu was available. There is a beer garden at rear, though did not get chance to see it. In fine weather tables are outside in the street. This is a little more "up-market" than most of the brewery bar/restaurants in Munich, but worth visiting if you plan to eat as well as have their excellent beers.

This is a 'quieter' and less-touristed Munich "beerhall" serving the entire range of Hacker beers in a traditional atmosphere of vaulted ceilings and a comfy courtyard (covered during my last visit, and I liked the way old copper rain gutters were affixed to various interior locations to drain-away any precipitation).

I have visited this place on two occasions, mostly for a relaxing late-lunch and beers. I notice that the locals also come here mostly for food -- not that beer in Munich ever appears to be an afterthought! They do pour a variety of styles from standard, Helles to light and dark wheat beers.

Perhaps not a place to seek out as a 'must,' but if strolling in the area (near the Sendlinger Tor) and a bit famished, worthy of a stop. I like the courtyard area the best.
