This is one of my favorite stops in the whole area. It's centrally located in the lower middle portion of the Englischer Garten.
Tons of picnic tables, chairs, and places to sit and relax. There's a large Chinese tower right in the middle (hence the name), and on weekends there's a band playing in the tower.
The beer served is HB, which is no problem at all. They serve the helles, weiss, and starkbier (ur-bock in this case) during the summer. All of those are solid choices, which is nice that you can't go wrong.
There's a TON of food options here. All of the typical traditional biergarten food, plus lots of snacks and side dishes I haven't seen anywhere else. They have some "country potatoes" that are to die for. They're a little like thick cut fries, but they have a dill/sour cream dipping sauce that is something I crave from 5,000 miles away. It worth going here just for those! The roasted chicken (hendl) is another excellent choice along with wursts of all kinds or pomme frites. There's also a full service restaurant that's known to be a bit more high-end if that's what you crave.
A great place to spend and entire day and in our last two visits we essentially did. You can spend the day wandering the park and stop off here (or the Seehaus if you want to mix things up) for drinks and snacks.
The place just oozes happiness and fun.
My favorite casual stop in Munich!

EDIT: They also have the HB Sommerbier (kellerbier) along with the Urbock starting in June. I find myself going back here several times on each trip just because I love the park and the atmosphere. It's one of those places that's probably not the highest scoring spot in town, but I'd choose over some other "better" places because of the vibe. On my last trip they were showing the World Cup on giant screens and even though I don't care for soccer - it was a blast.

Beer garden in the middle of a park/garden. Beer is your standard Munich fare, but its hard to complain as even the average beer in Munich is good. Food again is standard, but boy do I love pretzels. Prices are unfortunately also standard Munich tourist prices. The reason to go here is the atmosphere. Nice outdoor seating area in the middle of a park. Amazing place to relax after a nice walk through the park. An important part of any trip to Munich in nice weather.

Despite the average food and beer, the Chinesischer Turm remains an absolute must at the end of a walk on a nice day. Good memories.

Went here on a warm May afternoon and quite enjoyed it. The atmosphere was good and is what I imagine a German beer garden to be like with plenty of seats (half them or more empty but it was still quite busy). They had a band playing traditional Bavarian music playing half the time, with intervals between songs. It was different and quite enjoyable. The quality was as expected with everything being Hofbrau branded and they had a fair selection. The service was poor though as you had to go up to the bar to get a drink, no table service & had to pay a deposit on the beer glass with was annoying. It was nice, although a bit pricey & the fact there was a different queue for each type of beer annoyed me too. Doubt I would go back if I had the chance but it was about the only place within walking distance & needs must.

Went here on a late afternoon on a tuesday. It was jam-packed on a sunny day.

It was crowded and very touristy. I got a half liter of weissbier which was pretty good, all HB products.

I feel like this is the beergarten all of the smokers go to because that is all you could smell.

I had a few nibbles of food form others, the pretzel was underwhelming.

The price of a half liter was 4.90 with pfand, kind of pricey, though 1 euro for a glass isn't bad if you wanna keep it.

This is just a tourist trap, the tower itself isn't really anything to behold, I would avoid it.

Was happy to find this open on a one-day visit to Munich at the end of March; it couldn't have been more than 50 degrees (F) when I got there, but Muncheners sure do love to enjoy their beers outside.

There are few more enjoyable places to have a beer, in my opinion and if the weather is anywhere near-decent the Chinesischer Turm biergarten is a must. I suspect one reason the overall score for the Chinese Tower is fairly low is the fact it is all self-service; don't worry about that, this place is awesome.

The Chinese Tower area is HUGE - seating for thousands - and is served by a number of kiosk-style areas; some for beer, some for food, some for both. Different kiosks will have different offerings, so do a bit of surveying before you pick you seat. If you want a liter beer pick your style (Helles - light, Dunkel - dark, etc) and order it as a "Mass". You'll get a colored chip with your beer, which is your incentive to return your mug to the kiosk; when you do you'll get 2 Euros back in exchange for your mug and your chip. All the beer is Hofbrau beer, and that is a good thing; the Helles is extremely refreshing and tasty, especially, but not only on a warm day. Avoid the "Radler", which is a 50-50 mix of beer and lemon soda.

On this day in March there was just one kiosk open for beer and steering-wheel sized pretzels, but that was enough to make me extremely happy. However, on a typical summer day, you will find plenty of salty rotisserie hendl (chicken) and pork-based products to entice you to become one with your seating area, have a few liters and put on a healthy buzz while you people-watch and listen to the oompah band. Really just fantastic.

Yeah, it is a bit of a walk back into the city center (and from the city to get there), but it is a nice walk, and if it's warm out, you'll get a good view (depending on your perspective I guess) of a bunch of nude Germans (mostly dudes, unfortunately) sunbathing in the English Garden.

All in all a MUST when visiting Munich, and one of the happy places to visit in my mind when I need to....

Right in the middle of one of the biggest parks of the city. It's quite a walk from Marienplatz, though! I'd recommend getting off at a U-Bahn stop to the west and walking in.

The atmosphere is nice, as it's in a park, but it's made for lots of people. If you go when it's empty it could be a bit off-putting as then it's just a yard full of tables. Very efficient corraling food-serving system. I was there during the world cup, and they handled the crowd quite well.

Good food and beer, but not a great selectiion, as it's just HB stuff. This is one of the more expensive beirgartens, and you have to pay a deposit for the glass. Not a huge inconvenience, but something to note. I guess people want HB glasses.

A nice place but I'd pick the Hirschgarten instead for a big park-oriented place, or the Viktualienmarkt if you want a smaller place.

On our third day in Munich for Oktoberfest, we decided to take a break in the morning and stroll through the English Gardens. Pretty immense place. Just about in the middle is the Chinese Tower. Its surrounded by dozens of green table and hundreds of seats. We got there about noon on a Thursday, and it was mostly deserted. Went over to check out the cafeteria food selection. Self serve, so it's quick and offers less expensive options. Got a sandwich, fries, and a mug of Hofbrau hefe. We got a table, but beware the trees. When it's windy, you are bound to get bombed by falling chestnuts. Kind of a hike to get to, so I wouldn't recommend coming here solely for the beer garden. But if you are in the park, then definitely stop by for a beer.

Well this place is a bit touristy but not necessarily in a bad sense.
It s definitely got some good beer garden flair and I always take my foreign friends there just because...
The location in the Englischer Garten is very good and central so kudos for that.
Selection is above average just because they do a pretty good Urbock all year round and you cant argue with that.
The food is not great but as in ALL proper BIergaerten you can bring your own food without any discrimination so you can make it good.
