Enjoyed in a snifter at Firkin in Libertyville, IL...
Appearance - Arrived with about a finger of rich, thick dark cinnamon brown head, color of the stout was an opaque sienna brown/black, and left thick cinnamon lacing after each sip.
Smell - deep roast, rich molasses, semi-sweet black licorice, smells amazing.
Taste - wow - amaretto, black licorice, ripe dark fruits, dark chocolate and roasted coffee. These flavors are full, complex and extremely well balanced. The semisweetness of the fruits, amaretto and chocolate are present through midsip, slightly bitter and dry roast finish along with a touch of plumskin/anise tart-sourness.
Mouthfeel - just above medium mouthfeel, creamy and silky, low carb lends a smooth foaming feel that compliments the creaminess vs. and palate scrub. A wonderful sipper.
Overall - What a nice treat to enjoy while out with friends on a cool evening. Complex, balanced, sweet, bitter, dry, tart - it's all there, try this if you get the chance.

Served in a snifter today at the brewpub in West Dundee.
Inky black orb topped with a dark brown layer of foam that has a charred black tint to it. It has great head retention, the foam leaves drippy lacing all around the glass, and an ever present layer of creamy mocha foam obscuring the surface.
Intense roast and chocolate, dry and lightly charred. Smooth and subdued at first, becoming more full of character as it warms.
Big dark chocolate flavors, dry and bitter roast, with a light amount of sweetness too. Charred toast, silky melted dark chocolate, vague coffee elements. Smooth and creamy body, a fine slow sipper to spend an afternoon with.

Served in a snifter at Emmett's 2/7/07.
A: Jet black with a dark brown one finger head. Major lace as the head recedes.
S: Coffee, roasted malt, and bitter chocolate.
T: Bitter roasted coffee, baked bread, roasted malt, with bitter hops and tart fruit in the finish. Coffee flavor becomes more prevalent as it comes up to temp.
M: Dry yet very thorough. Mouthfeel felt thin like a porter.
D: Very good when the proper temperature is reached. Too cold upon initial pour. This one really comes alive as it warms.

Served in a snifter at the Palatine brewpub.
Finally setting foot inside this Emmett's after nearly a year. Right on. This stuff pours a straight obsidian topped by a finger of thick burnt sienna foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, cocoa, light sweet molasses, and rich toffee. The taste brings in more of the same, with the chocolate coming through richer, smoother, sweeter. Nice. The body is a light heavy, with a light moderate carbonation and a lightly chewy feel. Overall, a very nice impy stout, one of the best beers I've yet had from any Emmett's location. Get some!
