Served in a shaker pint glass at the Schaumburg brewpub.

I remember some sort of "pumpkin ale" here last year, which was just a blonde with some pumpkin spice liqueur plopped in at the bar, but this was stright keggin', so maybe they've got their act together. We'll see... This stuff pours a clear pale brass (emphasis on the pale) topped by a finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises very sweet pumpkin pie spices (I think we've all seen the lists by now, so let's just forgo the specifics and head straight for the final pie product), light maple syrup, and some mild caramel in the background. The taste brings in more of the same, with the biscuit toasted (not unlike baked pie crust), a vein of vanilla extract, and a definite increase in the overall sweetness. The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a slick feel. Overall, I actually really enjoyed this beer. It may come off as too sweet for some, but it was just up my alley with its liquid pumpkin pie qualities.

32 oz growler poured into a Sierra Nevada imperial pint.

A - Shockingly blonde, this beer is a shimmering golden wheat color with a firm white head. Thin, wispy lace has a tough time sticking to the glass.

S - Ram's Pumpkin Ale is fascinating in that it smells very similar to Pumking, though only in the odd artificial regard. Steamed wild rice and cooked noodles with oil block out the muddled spicy nose and artificial pumpkin puree while grainy pale malt backs it all up.

T - Notes of blond root beer poke through the jumbled and timid pumpkin pie spice adding to the interesting, though subdued, rice and pasta attributes in the flavor. Sweet pilsner malt seems to overtake the grainy pale base on the finish, giving this a sweeter feel.

M - Bright carbonation sparkles through this crisp medium-light bodied pumpkin beer and, while the spice doesn't manage any definition in flavor, there's a distinct spicy feel and dryness along the finish, again almost like a root beer.

O - I can't help but feel that this beer is nothing more than a feeble attempt at creating a fall seasonal last minute by taking one of the recipes for a base beer, perhaps a blonde, and adding some pumpkin and spice flavors to it. Ram's Pumpkin Ale feels much more like a lager and isn't executed very well with awkward artificial flavors resulting in a growler I think I'll have a hard time finishing.
