Got this at De Bierkoning in Amsterdam. This brewery is apparently trying to make a comeback, so here's hoping for the best.
From a bottle into a snifter.
IBU: 40
Series Nr. 593
APPEARANCE: A brown pour makes a one finger, medium-thinner looking, fizzy, light brown head with decent retention. Noisy one. Dark brown body, relatively transparent, with no carbonation evident. Head quickly fades to a wisp and ring. Only a ring remains until the end and leaves dots of lacing down the glass. A little under par here.
SMELL: Lighter nose of dark malts, roasted notes, light licorice notes and some dark chocolate. A decent nose to be sure, just a little mute.
TASTE: Dark malts, roasted malts, and some sweet caramel malts up front. A good dose of caramel, bitter chocolate and coffee in there, and even a hint of vanilla at the swallow. A bolder and lingering aftertaste with sweet dark malts, some bitter chocolate, and an odd bitterness that kind of dominates and doesn’t fit. Besides this, it is quite the tasty treat.
PALATE: Medium-full body, medium carbonation, and very creamy smooth on the palate. Goes down smooth and finishes with a touch of dryness on the palate. Very nice indeed.
OVERALL: This isn’t a bad brew, but it is a little lacking on the look, a little weak on the nose, and the odd bitterness after the swallow was a definite detractor. There is also a lot of positives in here, such as the nice initial flavors and big, robust palate, so there is a sold base to work with. I look forward to trying more of this brewery in the future. Give them a go if you get the chance.
