This a very unusual DIPA. It has a very orange hazy look. The weirdness comes with the smell and the taste, both of which are initially malty in a manner unusual for a California style IPA. The hops come out in the back of the mouth, and they are very dry. Overall the taste is unexpected and kind of uneven, especially when compared to its stylistic counetrparts. Sometimes I like the dry and malty taste, and sometimes I think it really misses the mark. The maltiness did make the beer feel especially heavy, which is not the best attribute for an already heavy ale. Overall it's kind of a hard beer to drink and nothing about its taste makes it redeemable enough to keep drinking. Don't necessarily avoid it, but perhaps don't go out of your way to get it.

Tropical fruit up front with dank hops on the finish on the dry side. Alcohol is not overpowering at first but it sneaks up on you. Great sipper by the beach on draft at the brewery.

13oz tulip at the brewery.
I ordered based on the description. Pine and citrus were subdued and tropical fruit was non existent. It was a solid beer. However, it wasn't great. The lack of dominant flavors and a muted nose make this a little forgettable. A touch boozy as the lack of bracing bitterness made this smooth, if not a little underwhelming.
Would I order something different next time? Yes.

Pale/Orange with with a foamy head and decent retention and lacing. Some nice citrus fruit, bread and a whiff of alcohol on the nose. Taste is balanced citrus, some tropical notes, mild bitterness, malty bread and alcohol. Mouthfeel is a little thin and harsh. Overall it's still very drinkable and fairly balanced for a 9% IPA. Good effort. I hope to see more of this hop forward theme from them.

On tap at Newhall Refinery in Newhall, CA.
Pours a clear yellow with a foamy off-white head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus fruit, citrus zest, and alcohol aromas. Taste is much the same with citrus zest, floral, and perfume flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium bodied mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer that is tasty but slightly boozy.
