On-tap at Island

Pours a slightly cloudy straw color with a white head. The nose is incredibly light. A weird lemon and lemon zest aroma. Minimal malt character, a touch of yeast, maybe some orange. The flavor is quite bland and very light. Mild grass and straw, a hint of malt, maybe some lemon zest in there, too. Lighter than a good deal of the light lagers I’ve had.

Reviews are from 2006, 2009, 2011 and now 10 months later in 2012. I have no idea when this beer was made but found it well stocked in a cooler at Green Jug in the San Fernando Valley. This site, and the bottle, say Limited Release. However, I must believe based on the foregoing that it has been made periodically.

Pours a solid yellow with a fast fading white head.

Nose is light corn tortilla which is nice but simple.

Mouthfeel is light, thin and rather non-descript.

Flavor profile is simple and single dimensional in it's tortilla yeasty character which then fades into a simple bitter lager finish.

Flavor, while simple, is pretty assertive and the finish is somewhat bold and long lasting. This one is a bit "watery" but with some appealing aspects.

Usually he sticks with ales, but Island brewmaster Paul Wright recently tried his hand at a lager. He calls simply enough the Tropical Lager. He wanted to model it after European lager styles and give it a Southern California kick. Not wanting to be called out on its style inconsistence by the beer snobs, he calls it just a regular ol' American Macro Lager. As such it is the best one of that sort that I've ever had. Unfortunately you can only get it at his taproom in Carpinteria, CA and he may discontinue it at the end of the batch, since it was more or less an experiment. Let's hope he changes his mind. In the meanwhile I'll keep heading back to the taproom again and again before it runs out.

A - Pale clear straw body with a thin white head. Just a little lacing.
S - Subtle pineapple scent.
T - Clear, cool, crisp! Slightly fruity pineapple flavor washes over the tongue with no cloying sweetness.
M - For the style it's got a fairly strong mouthfeel, but as a beer up against any other, it's light.
D - Absolutely the most drinkable lager I've ever had. This would be the hit of anyone's backyard bbq regardless of your usual tastes, whether you're a macro or micro drinker.

22 ounce bottle purchased for five dollars from the brewery on Sunday, drinking currently from my Stone pint glass, color is a light golden yellow, small 1/2 inch creamy white head that goes down quickly, no lacing, aroma consists of bread, toasted malts, earthiness, light hops, and saltines, flavor starts off with a crisp skunkiness, toasted caramel and loafs of bread in the middle, could not believe the chewiness I was getting from a lager, finish is slightly dry with hops but still a lot of toasted bread and grains in the aftertaste, did not change much as it warmed, toasted, dry, and crisp mouthfeel, light to medium bodied, moderate carbonation, could drink another bomber of this with ease, smooth and light, goes down very easily, nice seasonal from this Carpinteria brewery, nice session beer that is full of flavor for its style, think was listed around four percent alcohol, would drink again, worth trying

With a name like tropical lager I was expecting a nicely dry hopped off the beaten trail kinda thing. I guess that's what I get for judging a book by it's cover, or title rather. Basically this is like Corona, except that it's not skunked. Light, refreshing, crisp, clean, biscuity malt. Not a bad beer, definitely better than your average run of the mill lager. If BMC is your thing, this is for sure a step up, but still up your ally.
