Pours a solid finger of yellowed-light brown head over clear dark brown-mahogeny liquid. Smells chocolate, nut, slightly overcooked pancakes, grassy from hops, lightly of coffee, and a very tiny hint of nutmeg. Tastes dry dark chocolate, burnt nut, breakfast-roast coffee, black-strap molasses sharpness, caramel powder. Medium-light in the mouth. The slightly too much carbonation contributes to an astringent drying finish. Lightly of clean alcohol and grassy hop bitterness. Nice beer.

Very enjoyable Porter. I had it in a 22oz bomber. Bought this back in July 2013; however, just enjoyed it. Malty with a slight hoppy flavor. Great flavor and kick at 40 ibu and 6.0% abv. Slight coffee and chocolatey flavor. Great overall balance of flavor.

On-tap at Island

Pours a dark brown color with a creamy khaki head. Roasted malt, coffee, toasted nuts, and a light toffee sweetness. Some toasted bread, a light burnt note, and a hint of earthiness. The flavor has a bit of a burnt nut thing going on. Roasted malt, a bit of coffee and chocolate, and some earthy hops. Sort of watery with a light toffee sweetness.

Thanks to BigTuro for sharing this at Oneinchaway's tasting.

Pours a clear orange-brown with a foamy khaki head that settles to a partial film on top of the beer. Small streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of toasted malt, cocoa, char, and slight cardboard aromas. Taste is much the same with slight acidic cocoa and char flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roast bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is an average beer that is drinkable but it's too acrid and acidic in my opinion.

It really blows my mind that I'm the first to review this beer. Mainly since this brewery is by no means new (opened in 2000) and this beer has been one of their offerings, both on tap, and in bottles, for years.

Anyhow, first need to thank Chris, or Chewy as we call him for first exposing me to Island Brewing company, which is apparently Carpinteria's best kept secret based on the small amount of reviews.

Review is from notes

A: From the 22 oz bomber, the beer pours black, with a cola brown hue. Little to no light penetrates. A quarter inch of tan colored head rises, and slowly settles.

S: Fresh roasted espresso, roasted chocolate malt, & a kiss of vanilla.

T: Espresso, roasted malt, dark coco, biscuits, cream, and just a touch of bitter dryness on the finish.

M: Light to medium carbonation, mild coffee like acidity.

O: Very good porter, especially the coffee notes.

Also of note on this beer, per the Brewery's website, and I quote "A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the Blackbird Porter are donated to the Land Trust for Santa Barbara. " That's cool.
