apologies ahead of time as i do not know how to use european kezboards well. nice location in the absolutely beautiful town of salzburg. nice looking place with wooden interior and clean as well. sat behind the haus at a table viewing the plaza behind. the view was great, but the service was awful. inattentive and unhelpful waiter. did not order food, but the beer was decent at least. still probably the worst place i have been to while traveling through germany and austria. i have read good things about augustiner and am hitting that one up tonight.

Visited the Zipfer Bierhaus on 27th Nov 06 about 5pm. Entered from Sigmund Haffner Strasse into a very nice room with vaulted ceiling. Wooden panelling separating the wooden tables (with table cloths). The room had a nice airy feel to it, nicely lit and the pleasing sound of chat from the customers. No TV or piped music. Excellent attentive service from the waiters. No great selection of beer (obviously), they had 4 taps; Zipfer Urtyp Pils, Kaiser kellerbier, Heinekin (?!) and a Weizenbier hefetrub. Zipfer Pils on tap tastes much nicer than the sad version I had from a bottle in Dublin. Nice place to visit for a brew.

The Zipfer Bierhaus is situated in the centre of the old town, the premises having entrances both on the narrow Sigmund-Haffner Gasse, and from the Universitatsplaz (where the Collegiate Church is situated, and the market stalls) where, in good weather, they also have chairs and tables outside. Inside at the Platz entrance is the more upmarket restaurant area, and from the Sigmund-Haffer entrance is the more beerhall side, but you can walk right though. They have there own Zipfer pils beer, as well as Kaiser pils and the Kaiser Edelweiss Wheat beer. Zipfer beer is a simple crisp easy to drink light beer on tap, not outstanding but tasty and enjoyable, a shade sharper and drier than Stiegl, but more body and taste than the Kaiser pils beer. The Edelweiss is a pleasant wheat beer, drier than some.
Good service from the staff, most of whom have some English, and the menu is easy enough to understand. The food range is simple but good, and fair value for a bar right in the centre of Salzburg old town, no complaints at all. Beer price is average too at 3.40 a half litre in March 2006. Mixed range of people use the Bierhaus, though it did tend to be more mature guys drinking beers in the Bierstube. Can be busy mid-day with tourists, but quiter in the evenings, and we found it handy to be able to call in for a beer and get a table and seat easy in the evenings. Does not open on Sundays.
The premises are not that spacious, so fills up quickly, and you may have to share a table with others.
Worth a visit if you fancy a reasonable beer and something to eat in the centre of the town at fair prices and can get a table.
