330ml bottle from local bar in Calabria, Italy. Pours a golden copper with a medium slowly dissipating white head. Aroma of toasted double malted malts, barley, grains with some strong tones of fruity alcohol esters. Palate is a medium to full body, slightly astringent dry mouth feel with moderate carbonation. Finish is a combination of toasted malt, grains ending with a good amount of boozy alcohol fruity notes. Overall a bit boozy and sweet, an interesting brew to try once

Draught in some random bar, Rome, December 2013.

Needed a 9% ABV blast after drink sour craft beers all afternoon elsewhere in Rome: this did the trick.

This is just a hangover in waiting really: however I'll be fair with my scores and words.

Looked good, clear, bright and clean: a true golden brew with a full if thin white head.

Grainy nose and taste, the alcohol barely hidden within the weak flavour.

This is the sort of beer that gives Scotland and Tennent's a bad name.

Tennent's Super Strong Lager may be "Scotland's No. 1 Beer" (as the can claims), but this can was brewed in Maharashtra, India, where the brand enjoys a loyal following. It pours a very pale translucent golden color with a short-lived fizzy white head and lots of carbonation.

The nose is grainy and very sweet. Ethyl alcohol is up front.

The taste is more pleasant than I expected it to be. Bitter alcohol flavors begin to emerge in the middle of the palate, but are quickly masked by barley and rice malts, whose sweetness outstays its welcome. There's not anything special here, but neither is there anything offensive. The sweetness makes the brew quite drinkable. In fact, this strong lager may be too drinkable for its own good. My 500 ml (16 oz.) can disappeared in a matter of minutes.

Overall, Tennent's Super Strong Lager is not a beer I'd recommend to beer drinkers who have access to superior representations of the strong lager/malt liquor styles. But if you find yourself in Delhi with 65 rupees (about $1.25/€1) in your pocket, you might pick up a can. You could certainly do a lot worse here.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a hotel water glass. Bermusian liquor store acquisition.

Pours darker golden brown, head of white foam. Active bubbles. Beer smell, notes of straw and glass. That was the best I would feel about this beer.

Acrid bitter lager taste. Not clean, dirty and damaging. Boozy and bitter. Offputting.

Very difficult to drink. A real downer. Drain pour.

330ml bottle

A- Somewhere in the middle between golden and amber. Nice and decently dense two finger head that has nice retention, though it leaves no lacing at all. Strong carbonation is visible

S- A strong alcoholic feel, with not much besides. Just some nice undernotes of bready malts and fruit (apple, orange)

T- Strong grainy malts with a slightly metallic feel and maybe some hints of caramel. Some plain alcoholic notes can be easily felt, though they never really get too annoying. Slighlty fruity (mainly apple) on the palate. Finishes with a hint of bitterness

M- Quite dense body and carbonation. Nothing really interesting, but the full mouthfeel fits nicely with the beer's strong feel

O- This is no more than a classic, uninteresting industrial lager that has been on steroids. That alcoholic feel does not help drinkability. Overall this is still a fairly decent beer, mostly due to it's strong body and feel

It pours a transparent copper-orange with a 2 mm white head.
The smell is like a delicious, if somewhat sour malt liquor.
Taste is stupendous. It beats the hell out of American malt liquors and high gravity lagers. Why can't they just make stuff like this in America? How hard would that be? Are our brewers just so unskilled that they don't know how to do it? Is there no market for decent strong lager?
Anyway, the taste is not what I expected considering how much the smell resembled American malt liquor. It's more like someone actually took the time to craft a good tasting malt liquor, while still capturing everything a malt liquor should be. It's like those that brewed it actuallly TASTED it before putting it out on the market. It's got malty sweetness and surprisingly, some hops to balance it out. But it's also got that alcohol bite that I just love in a strong, transparent lager like this. That alcohol taste's got nowhere to hide. It has just a hint of a fusel bite on the finish with caramel sweetness in the aftertaste. It's the way a strong lager should finish. Once, again, American macros are beaten into the dust by their European competitors. Will they ever learn?
