This is basically a pretty good pilsner with pretensions. If this was in the 4.5% - 5% alcohol range it would be a top pilsner but it doesn't really have enough flavour to jusifty the 6% alcohol level. I assume the main problem is the use of corn in the recipe - corn is used mainly to increase the alcohol level without adding any real flavour or body to the beer. I think, if they just left the corn out, this could be a very good mid-strength pils instead of an average strong pils.

Malt and hop flavours are far more pronounced than the standard Hertog Jan pils - I think some Vienna or perhaps Munich malt has been used to achieve this flavour. The Saaz hops come through nicely in the flavour - the bittering could perhaps stand to be a little stronger but is certainly adequete.

This is a standard offering in the local supermarket and will probably find it's way into my trolley now and then, but not something I'd go searching for.

Luxury Pilsner, announced on the bottle and on the website, making me expect a nice beer with good hops.

Colour is full golden, with decent carbonation, a disappointing head , but ok lacing in my glass though.

Smell and taste are mildly bitterness. Some floral and citric hops, a bit of malts. Mellow and easy aftertaste, a bit watery. Very clean finish. The taste is gone quickly, so you need another sip.

All in all, a nice drink for the serious pilsner drinker.
Again Hertog Jan proves to me they produce modest, but well balanced beers.

30cl Brown bottle, the first of three hertog Jan beers I intend reviewing today, my Dutch Beer Afternoon.

Poured into a Corsendonk tulip glass.

Old gold with a good white head, it looks like a tough lager. The bottle claims it to be an 'Extra Pilsner'. It is very clear and does appear a clean, tidy lager/pils. The head soon goes, just like most lagers.

No aroma apart from the normal yeasty, beery smell pilsners give off, it gets my regular lager 3 for a score.

It tastes like a lager beer with extra alcohol thrown in, there is not much more to say on the matter.

There is some body to the beer and it does hang about in the mouth, but it just doesn't float my boat.

Nothing wrong with this beer, but there is something not right, it may be too much alcohol, or it may be the hops used, I can't put my finger on it.

A very surprising cider apple color greeted me upon pouring – topped by a small white ring of head and lace.

Aroma was mostly the European yeast skunk, Dry, earthy and woody tastes – all subtle. Very euro lager, reminiscent of a Heiny or a German lager pilsner versus a bock brew. Body is fairly thin, and one would have no idea it has 6%, this is almost a session brew.

Thanks to my great son, “studying” overseas in Amsterdam, for the unique chance to sample this brew.

This beer is a sort of pilsner on steroids, with more alcohol and bitterness than the Hertog Jan pilsner.
Appearance was pilsner style, golden with a small head and lots of carbonation.
Smell was slightly malty and I could smell some adjuncts, think it is corn. The label mentiones unmalted adjuncts, so that is probably it.
Taste is bitter, which is very nice, some maltiness and a rather thin body, like a pilsner. Yeah, this is really a pilsner+, I like it. Not as a session beer, but as a light refreshing beer. Let's call it an urtype pilsner!
