this bottle from a trade with Absumaster in NL, thanks again for the first batch of dutch beers!

pours very dark copper/orange with a very small (3mm) light tan head. nose is very malty, a bit dry, slightly sweet, and a bit bready. overall very attractive on the nose, if my description doesn't convey that. Curiously, ingredients include E150c, which single malt scotch drinkers might recognize as an artificial colorant(?).

taste is sweeter than the nose, a bit dry, with some hint of a very dark sugary or sweet taste. This is quite distinct from a belgian brune or dubbel, and works quite well.

Overall a very pleasant beer. Until I scrolled up to make a comment on the alcohol I had assumed this was a 5-6% beer based on taste. I had absolutely NO idea this was a ten-percent ABV beer! You cannot tell at all.

very clear copper body and massive fine head

aroma is dominant alcoholic, dark fruits, and oxidized Madeira notes

Taste is a combination of sweet, sour and Rum that is rather harsh

Body is medium to heavy, oily and has fine carbonation

lots of rather harsh alcohol and still quite flat, would probably need more aging but already tastes and smells oxidized. Not nice.

Nice fully head, what will fade away in a couple of minutes, very good almost black colour. But when you look good, a pure dark ruby colour is in it classy beer of Hertog Jan.

This Grand Prestige, have a red fruit like cherry smell, also some redwine/port elements in it. Roasted barley, and hints of syrup.

a Wonderful texture of freshness brings this beer. With the alcohol of 10%, it is a very good drinkable beer. Indeed again the red fruits as cherry and berries are here as also sugary and caramel influences.

a Surely a good Grand Prestige from the masterbrewers of Hertog Jan.

I am not really sure how feel about this beers style category. Although it wasn’t bad I don’t know if I would call it a Belgian style. Maybe we should give the Dutch their own category. It was probably my favorite Hertog Jan. Very nice looking. Nice dark head and lace with a brown-red tint. The body was dark brown amber. There was cloudy carbonation haze at first that died down to nothing. The aroma was mild but chocolate roasted malt did dominate over the other esters. The flavor was very roasty at first with a lot of coffee and chocolate tones. The taste is earthy at the end. It has more of a medium mouthfeel and the alcohol in not that apparent.

A cola like beer with an offwhite head.
No hazy, this is a macrobeer so filtered I guess.

Also uses artificial colouring. Shame.

Smells a bit like a doppelbock or a dark weizenbock. Reminds me of Aventinus actually.
Wheat starch is used as a brewing ingredient. The banana character must come from that.
As for the rest lots of caramel sweetness, spice, some alcohol and a bit of dark fruits.

Tastes nice even though a tad simple prehaps. A nice full caramel maltiness with dark fruits and spice. The alcohol is pretty well hidden.

The mouthfeel is medium and the carbonation is medium to low.

Overall a very solid beer. Hertog Jan has the best selection of beers (other that their flagship lager) of all the Dutch macrobrewers. Out there with La Trappe in the easily available good Dutch beers section. Cheap also, like € 1.30/40 a bottle or so.

Had this one after a Hertog Jan Karakter.
The similarities are quite clear. It has that same sweet caramel / brown sugar base with spices like clove, but all more subtle and more balanced. It's like a more aged Karakter somehow.

It has a higher ABV, although you don't get much of that. It's still easy to drink, although not as easy as Karakter. Also i'm unsure i like this more or not. People probably will call this one more balanced. It's not as sweet and less malts and yeast. This one comes with a mellow bitter hop kick to balance out the flavors better, but also making it somewhat more neutral.

Also a bit thicker. It's just the "sipping version" of Karakter. I like it, but it depends on the mood which one i prefer.

My second bier at Café 't Arendsnest on 02OCT12 was the 2008 version of this, at €4.00 for a 0.25l glass.

It was a deep garnet/ruby color - lovely! It was clear, and had a 1/2" creamy layer of tan foam. The head lasted well and left nice lacing. Aroma was of dark fruit and some semi-sweetness. It was medium bodied and quite unoffensive on the tongue.

Flavor was fruity and leaned towards the dark side. Had some semi-sweetness but no tartness or sour notes. Had some cherry action and a bit of raisin/date stuff going on as well. A bit on the simplistic side but still quite refreshing. Prosit!!
