12 oz. bottle purchased in Chile as part of a four beer sampler pack. Given to me as a gift. No freshness dates or batch markings.
A: Pours straw yellow with a small but lasting off-white head that leaves attractive lacing. Looks highly carbonated, nearly champagne-like, bottle conditioned with a light haze.
S: Sweet lager malts smell slightly of honey. Mild floral hops add just a bit of bite.
T: Simple lager with a slightly sweet honeylike malt backbone and a very mild floral hop balance. Mild with no discernable off-flavors. Better than a lot of mass marketed European imports. Simple, easy, and nothing wrong with that. The biggest flaw is the lack of excitement.
M: Light to full bodied with medium carbonation. It looks a lot more carbonated than it feels. Pretty nice. For a beer as mild and easy as this, it is surprisingly well bodied.
D: Not particularly interesting as a brew, but pretty easy to deal with. This is something that could easily be drank in any number of situations.

A CAN from Chile for the CANQuest (TM) to try! CAN you dig it?!?
From the CAN: "En 1896 Jose Fischer, Maestro Cervecero Aleman, funda en Puenta Arenas 'Cerveceria La Patagona', actualmente Cerveceria Austral. Cerveza Austral. Hecha en Punta Arenas. Visite nuestra planta. Elaborada y enlatada por Cerveceria Austral S.A. Patagonia 508, Punta Arenas, Chile. Tradicion desde 1896 - Punta Arenas./In 1896 Jose Fischer, a German Brewmaster, founded in Puenta Arenas "Patagona Brewery", nowadays the Austral Brewery. His recipe still exists today thanks to the perfect mixture/combination of hops, the best malted barley and pure water...making it therefore the world's southernmost beer...Austral Beer. Made in Punta Arenas. Visit our plant. Brewed and bottled by Austral Brewery S.A Patagonia 508, Punta Arenas, Chile. A tradition since 1896 - Punta Arenas."
My pour created just better than a finger of bone-white head that did not hold up well in the northern hemisphere. Color was a golden-yellow with NE-quality clarity. I am really digging the nose on these adjunct-free lagers! They have a sweetish maltiness that is really specific to a decent lager, but I find difficult to otherwise quantify. It is like pornography - I know it when I [smell] it. Mouthfeel was medium with a clean, lager-like sweetness, free of adjuncts and very refreshing. Finish was slightly dry and highly refreshing. Do they have coolers in Chile? Put some in yours!

Golden color with a thin head with short retention.
Aroma of grainy malt, some sulfur and grassy hops.
Flavor of sweet pale malt, lemon, mild diacetyl, minerals and herbal hops. Dry aftertaste with mild bitterness.
Light body with medium carbonation.
Decent Lager, though there are best local offerings. Their Calafate Ale was much more interesting.

12 oz. bottle purchased on a rainy day at a bar on Chiloe Island, southern Chile.
Appearance: Poured very pale yellow with thick effervescent white head. Low head retention.
Smell: Sweet, grainy malt smell. Little to no hops in aroma.
Taste: Light body with crisp malt flavor, very little hop bitterness, finishes fresher than your typical South American lager.
Mouthfeel: Light body, high carbonation.
Overall: Light malty taste and crisp finish makes Austral better than your average South American macrobrewed lager.

A - pours with a small, white head on a clear, deep golden body. Low retention and little lace.
S - Grainy malt, some grassy hops, and a hint of sulphur.
T - very light malt with a hint of corn and some musty, slightly skunked hops.
M - medium body, moderately high carbonation, and a dry finish.
D - an average adjunct lager, as expected in these parts. The slightly rotten, light struck hop flavor is reminiscent of heineken.
