Nice comfortable place in a bit of a tough looking location. Service was very attentive even though there was only one person on at the time we were there. The beer selection was overall good with many great beers in bottles. I only wish the draft selection was on par with their bottle offerings. The food was near perfect with their claim to fame being the burger list. Many unique combinations. All the menu items looked great and it was hard to choose, and, each item was paired with a recommended beer. I would return there anytime I was close by on the merit of the food and bottle selection.

I can imagine that back when "Friends" was leading the must-see TV lineup this place was probably a standout. In 2010 -- whoops, 2011 -- having a couple dozen tap lines and lots of stuff in bottles does not make a good beer bar. Especially when neither the waitresses nor bartenders have any idea about the beers they serve nor can describe them beyond insightful lines like "It's medium-bodied." (Really? Wow, that helps so much, thanks). Too add insult to injury they charge you $6-$7 for pints that should be $4-$6 at most.

This place is a college bar with better-than-average food and a lot of uninteresting, over-exposed beer. Should be called "The Flabby." Places in Providence with a real craft selection on draft include Harry's, Abe's, Wickenden, Luxe, Union Station, and Wild Colonial. Don't waste your gas getting to this place.

Decent little beer bar out side the rush of Providence. It takes me 5 minutes to get there and I have been going more often to watch some games on Sunday. I went last Friday night and it was relatively quite. The Celtics were a disappointment to say the least and the Bruins, well no need for comment. The food has been great every time I go. Great portions for any hungry appetite. The burgers are awesome and I suggest the onion rings. Huge homemade battered rings that are nice and crispy. The wings are great too. I am really impressed with the food for such a small dive spot. Great beer paraphernalia on the walls and other sports stuff.
The beers on tap are not bad at all. Some decent selection for tap brew like the Otter Creek Imperial IPA and Magic Hat Circus boy. Harpoon had a couple taps. Sam Adam's seasonal and the regulars. They cater to the college crowd so lots of malt tails as well for the chicks. There have been some nice looking ladies in there as well from time to time so that is an extra point from me. They do have a good selection of bottles and they mix it up with different deals. I would say they certainly have something for all types.
Service is friendly and they know a thing or two about hat they serve. I was impressed with one of the bar tenders knowledge. She did not seem like she would know her beers but she surprised me with that! Overall I would recommend giving this bar give it a shot as I have been enjoying my visits and I plan to keep hitting it up when I can.
Although they have the shot machines and a lot of College directed drinks there are some hidden treats to be had. Some of the other reviews I have read really make this place out to be horrible but it really is not that bad I have been to much worst locations with a much worst selection!

i would not consider this a "beer bar." the bottle list is bigger than the tap selection, but there is absolutely nothing unusual or hard to find on there. when i was there the draught offerings were minimal: miller lite, summer shandy, newcastle, guinness (a poorly built pint), SA, etc.

however, if you're content with those choices, this is a great neighborhood spot. sure it can be filled with college kids, especially on tuesdays for wing night, but it wasn't all that loud and the inside has a very comfortable feel to it. i haven't been there enough to sample all the food, but the wings looked great and the sandwiches are pretty good as well.

definitely check this place out if you're looking for a new spot to grab a burger; just don't hold the unimpressive beer list against it.

It is a very small bar, literally a hole in the wall. But with the right table it is very cozy. They recently changed their food menu as well adding some new stuff and stepping up their old stuff. They have always had great sandwiches which are served an a delicious sourdough bread. Their appetizers are always on point as well. And now they have some good dinner options like Fish & Chips

Now to the beer. I know it's limited and their menu has a ton of beers that shouldn't be on a craft list like Mike's Hard Lemonade and Narragansett, but they have my favorite Unibroue's, Orval and Chimay, Duvel, Dead Guy, Sam Smith, Ayinger and few other Germans. I go there for what is now excellent food, and some great beers. A personal favorite

I've driven by this place a million times and I finally stopped in.

The atmosphere and decor is nice and comfortable. It's got a good sized bar on one side and a fair number of tables filling the rest of the floor space. They used dark woods and the walls are covered with beer signs and paraphernalia. The kitchen is somewhat exposed in the back and it made me think about eating. I went on a weekeday afternoon so it was pretty quiet as far as the crowd goes.

The selection and quality were mixed. I was very disappointed with the tap selection. For a place called the Abbey, I expected a Belgian on draft. No such luck. They were mostly the usuals (Harpoon IPA, Guinness, Smithwicks), crap (Miller Lite & Blue Moon) and some locals (two from Newport and one from Wachuset). It was tough to find one worthwhile. I went with a Newport Isabela, a Belgian knock off I suppose, and it was OK. They had about 60 in the bottle with some good ones (Anchor Steam, DFH 60, several by Sam Smith's, a few Belgians) and a fair amount of crap. Overall, the beer list, while numerous, was disappointing.

The service was average. The bartender I had didn't seem to know much about beer.

It's not a bad place if you're in the area but it's not what you'd expect from the name and exterior.

This place for a long time was the hang out for a few of my close friends and I. We sat at the same table every Monday and Thursday. The owner is never seen there and from what I have been told by Phil, the kitchen manager, he has only step foot in the place like 3 times in the last 5 years.

The Abbey is definitely more of a college hang out than a beer lovers haven. The beer list contains approximately 70 beers or so, with roughly 9-10 on tap including Bass, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams seasonal, Smithwick's, Guinness, Blue Moon White Ale, ad from time to time Stone Arrogant Bastard just to name a few.

The food is very good as well, the wings are nicely spiced but were not uite as meaty as I would have hoped although they did taste wonderful. My favorite burger that I had nearly every time I went was called the Tiajuana Burger, which was a cooked to order burger with guacamole and marinated banana pepper rings.

It is a nice and relaxed atmosphere that I still enjoy going to today, mostly for the fact that it has a few good beers that I enjoy and it has become for me, as well as many other, just like cheers was ... the place where everybody knows your name. For those of you who have had trouble with the service i cannot say that they are great, in fact I would agree that the bartenders that they staff are not very experienced in any other place than this so they are used to serving the regulars like you would expect any other restaurant. if you are new you may have to take some initiative and try to get the bartenders attention like you had to do when you went to a crowded bar.

Visited on 1/11/07. The crowd seemed like it was a mix of college kids and upper-middle class and the selection reflected that the place is trying to appeal to both crowds. It seemed more like a place for friends to get together and hang out, rather than a local watering hole. Service was good; nothing good or bad stood out there.

The beer selection was very good. About 10-12 taps, Magic Hat seasonal, Sam Adams Boston Lager, Sam Adams seasonal, Old Speckled Hen (nitro), Harpoon IPA, Newport Storm RI Blueberry, Guinness, New Castle, Blue Moon White & Blue Moon Winter. A good variety, but not the most highly rated beers overall. The bottle selection is where the good stuff is. The cooler is difficult to see from the bar, but the have a well-put-together beer menu with approximately 50-60 different bottles, many of which from reputable breweries like North Coast, Unibroue and others as well as several regional brews. I didn’t try the food, but I plan to the next time I go there. I had two pints and my bill came to $9.00, so the prices are reasonable, but slightly high.
