I was in Milwaukee for the weekend, and had Friday night free from obligations so I wanted to find a decent, mellow beer bar to try selections I cannot find on tap in MN. Wanting to avoid the Water/Brady/Summerfest scene, I found this place on Beerfly, and was rewarded for my search.
Romans is located in the South side of town, several miles away from the downtown scene, in a regular working-class neighborhood. The tavern itself is actually a converted home, the street level converted into a bar. Not a large bar, with tables to the side and two smaller rooms in back as well as a lovely porch to the side behind the bar. This tavern looks like many other working-class neighborhood taverns at first glance, until you notice the beer selection.
The beer selection is outstanding, including 30 taps. Every one, to my memory, was devoted to an American, German, or Belgian craft beer. I cannot obtain FFF in MN, so I was delighted to find several selections from that brewery here. Romans has a handy beer menu, it looks like it is updated every couple days, or whenever a tap runs out. The menu also lists several "beers in waiting" for when a line opens up, which I thought was a nice touch. I am not a cigar aficionado, but they also sell what appears to be a high-end selection of cigars on the premises as well.
The clientele is a nice mix of locals and other beer geeks that made the trip to the neighborhood because this place is a beer destination. Unpretentious is a great adjective for the scene here, unlike many other taverns with top-notch beer selections. The other patrons were having pleasant conversations about beer or the Brewer game on the large flat-screens behind the bar.
The owner that has been mentioned on several other reviews was not present as far as I could see. Instead a lovely lady was tending the bar. She was friendly and knew her beer as well as any beer geek I have ever met. She chatted up my wife & me about her beer vacation she had taken recently to Belgium.
Prices were more expensive than what you would expect for that neighborhood, but in line with other great beer bars in the Midwest that I have visited. Basically, you are getting what you pay for.
Overall, I love this place and wish I had one in my neighborhood. Highly recommended for any BA looking to get away from the crowds of the downtown Water St/Brady St area of Milwaukee.

Mike, the owner, is actually a really great guy and more knowledgeable about beer than anyone else I've met. When it gets busy and he's the only one behind the bar, maybe he can come off as a bit short but I've had nothing but great experiences there. They also have never hesitated to let me try a beer before committing to a full glass. I love the place and go there every chance I get.

Best beer in the City of Milwaukee. Lines are cleaned almost weekly to keep the beer tasting great. The owner knows his beer and the menu is constantly changing. Only gripe is that the bar is a bit small. This place is a must on any beer enthusiasts list.

Let me start by saying the owner is a dick. Totally rude to my friends who didn't know much about beer and asked him a few questions. He was also drunk, which doesn't bother me if it's not affecting your job.Despite this, the place has a great beer selection and one of the only places in Milwaukee to get rare/limited beers on tap. I would recommend, if you don't mind rude service.

Visited on the afternoon of June 27th. With Milwaukee's Summerfest going on the rather small place was almost empty. That was okay, because we got the owner's (Mike Roman) nearly full attention as he patiently explained the local beer selections to us out-of-staters. Must say he was spot on with his recommendations! Mike obviously takes his beer very seriously, with a fantastic tap selection and impressive glassware. He's somewhat of a dichomoty because he's not what you'd expect such a meticulous craft beer bar owner to look like (pardon the profiling here) - in fact he looks more like someone you'd expect to see hanging out with your dad in a bowling alley after a hard day driving a steamroller. Don't mean that in a bad way, he's a friendly dude who loves great beer and sharing his love for beer with his customers which makes him the best kind of bartender in my book. He does not serve food.
