On tap at The Herkimer. This beer arrives a dark brown color. The head is one inch of dark tan foam that sticks around until the beer is gone. The aroma is of dark chocolate, roasted malt, caramel, raisins, and hints of strawberry. The taste is similar to the aroma. The mouthfeel is full bodied with moderate carbonation, and a chewy texture. Overall, this is a first class doppelbock. It almost comes across as being a cross between a doppelbock and a Baltic porter, but I think that works really well. I will certainly drink this beer again when it is available.

Served on tap in a tulip glass, this pours a hazy brown color, with a small white head and ample white lacing on the glass. The smell is faintly sweet. The taste is amazing. I tasted caramel, toffee, a slight cherry brandy flavor, chocolate, and a crispness with a hint of hops at the tip of the tongue. The mouthfeel was rich, smooth, and creamy. This is the highest alcohol brew at Herkimer and that only sightly mars the drinkability of this marvelous creation. This is by far the best beer i've ever had from Herkimer. The new brewer is working wonders here. Get it before it's gone!

Snifter. 10 ounce, 12, 8? They didn't tell me...

Dark mahogany hue, slim ring of head, soon disappeared.

Muted caramel malt aroma, nutty notes, with a trickle of maple. Good...-ish.

Sweet and slick in the taste, toasted caramel is king, drying at the end. A bit grainy in the mouthfeel, but over-archingly candy-ish. Well-textured, medium-bodied, tasty, but very mellow for the style. A good doppel, but not very good. Almost smooth, lays languidly on the tongue, imparting flavor, but not sticking hard enough on the palate.
Could use more depth, some greater heft in the body...definitely could be chewier, rather than sliding flavor softly on the tongue.

But for a middle-of-the-road doppel, thumbs up.

Pours to a ruby-brown color with a small tan head. Leaves a bit of lacing when sipped down. The aroma is of caramel malts and toasted malts. Has a slight bit of huskiness as well. Nice German malt characteristics.

The flavor is malty and toasty, with a slight bit of nobel hop spiciness. It is full bodied and smooth drinking. A nice brew. My Christmas gift from Stubob. Not bad.
