SLO Brewing is like a lot of other brewpubs in California. It has a fairly varied selection of tolerable food and a fairly varied selection of tolerable brews. The food is the typical stuff: burgers, salads, sandwiches, pasta. The regular rotation beer styles are also pretty typical: pale ale, IPA, stout, amber, porter, stout. On a recent trip, the selection was augmented with an imperial stout and a chocolate stout. The service is acceptable. If you have a guy serving you, be prepared to wait while he spends time taking care of the coeds. This provides a nice seque to the crowd. SLO is a college town, and SLO Brewing pulls in its fair share of the younger crowd. However, it's not the type of place where you'll find lines of frat guys getting shit-faced on $2.00 pitchers. The crowd's lively enough to keep things interesting, without being a real pain in the ass. It's definitely worth a stop if in SLO.

This is named the best small brewpub by the GABF. This place has a billiards area on the first floor, and the restaurant/bar on the top floor. Has a large black board with the house brews. They were out of their saphead imperial stout, but had lots of others. I brought home a growler of their porter which was very delicious, but a bit pricey.

Good pub atmosphere, but the focus here is giving the college crowd in SLO a good time. At night, there is always a good sized crowd from Cal Poly. Oddly though, they still have some great brews on tap.

They offer many different sizes and samplers and growlers to go. Definitely worth a stop when you're in SLO.

If you do not live in SLO then this is a great stop for lunch when a road trip requires one to travel the 101 freeway from soCal to noCal or vice versa. I have never been here at night but I have been here often for a pint or two at lunchtime.

The SLO brewery is located in the main shopping district of SLO. A real enjoyable part of town to walk around and take in SLO and check out the shops.

The establishment is in two parts. A down stairs and an upstairs. First the down stairs, which I have never been to for a drink. Always closed when I visit because it is for the night time crowd and I am always traveling by day. A very long bar with no stools. Colored lamps hang from the ceiling. A stage for bands and an open space for dancing. This is what I saw through the window.

Now the upstairs. This is more of a restaurant feel than the down stairs. The building is brick and the upstairs has a very worn in wooden floor. Signs of SLO's beers cover the walls. A medium sized bar with seats is opposite the stairway. Tables and chairs fill out the middle of this large room. On either side there are a total of seven pool tables. All in good condition. Five or six t.v.s display sporting events. A huge window next to the bar allows a person to view the brewing equipment. If I had a major complaint about the decor or architecture it would have to be with the mens room. Remodeling is in definate need. It is not unsanitary, it is just hard to move around in the room. The doors hit and one can get smacked by another door. Also the graffitti on the wall is in poor taste and written by blatherskites who have no imagination and could not conjure up a quality crude soliliquey if their lives depended upon it. Alas, the dumbing down of the restroom wall poet.

This place has a full bar of spirits, wines and the macros are in bottles.

Their own beers are on tap. They brew much of the beer here but bottle their few bottled selections elsewhere. I have had a couple varieties of their IPA here. The Cole Porter is very good. A good bite to this one. The Amber and Extra Pale are very good session beers. My girlfriend had the Wheat beer and really enjoyed it. They have an Imperial Stout on tap now. I did not try it because it is 10% ABV and I was driving but I hear it is damn good. They have about ten of their beers on tap all of the time.

The food is good. Bar food mostly. The nachos were okay. Good toppings. Weak chips. My girlfriend recommends the burgers. The menu has plenty of items, mostly in the bar food range but a few dishes that are outside the pub grub realm.

Service has always been good but not overly superb. They take good care of you here but are not all that interested in really being overly friendly about serving a person.

This is a great stop for those on a road trip through California either south or north.

Notes: The upstairs does allow families. You do not have to be twenty one.
They have a growler take out service.
The downstairs has a Mardi Gras night and a Coyote Ugly night for extreme partiers. This is partially a collage town and therefore the parties can be pretty crazy. Check the photos on the website.

Overall this is a very well run establishment which caters to all types. The food could be better but I recommend giving this place a try.

Two floors of beers, billiards and music in sunny SLO. What more could you want? The preceding is a very easy conclusion to walk away from this pub with.

A sunny afternoon midweek: I didn't love the set-up of the place, and BA's who like their bars and pubs to be intimate and full of nooks and crannies may agree with me. There is definitely a live music venue feel to the upstairs with the stage at one end dominating the architecture. I just looked at the website and Pato Banton and Robert Bradley are playing there this month, putting it in the realm of Annapolis, MD's Ram's Head and the defunct Stone Coast in booking good names while brewing good beer.

But the bar down one side of the room has a whole bunch of choices. Sampler, sampler sampler. I either lucked into tasting the best of the lot, or they do an awful lot of things right. Nice to have an imperial stout on draft, and I did like the IPA and Extra Pale Ale.

So I guess an establishment that started as a brewpub with entertainment and that is now working hard to be a great beer bottler can still pay attention to the details at their original home base. SLO is the kind of place that you wish you had in your town, even as it's not 100% a beer lover's dream.
