Are you looking to get hammered and then have a pizza? then nicks is the place for you. in fact, you dont even have to leave the bar to get a pizza as the kitchen is open till midnight. this place gets packed during the school year and is pretty obnoxious. they have the tv sports setup going on up stairs and a bit more intimate invironment down below. I have had a bad experience with one of their bartenders who told me to go fuck myself after I told him that this wasnt the drink I ordered. but the guy with dreads who works the downstairs bar is diligent and attentive, and a good bar keep. dont bother with the food unless you are wasted, then it wont even matter: this is the system I'm pretty sure they envisioned for their bar. its also a favorite local of the professor body at IU, so especially during the summer and weekdays, prepare for an older, more mature crowd. they have guinness, macros, and one to two taps from upland. not worth it unless you answer to the question above.

I only get to frequent Nick's about once or twice a year but it is a tradition. A lot of it is the atmosphere of IU but I have always had an enjoyable meal.
The quality of the drink and food has always been on target. Service is generally good but at times it seems geared towards the regulars. The selection of beer isn't great but they usually have a few Upland beer's (wheat, ipa, etc.) on tap as well as Blue Moon, Fat Tire, Two hearted, as well as some imports. I'm a fan of the Upland Wheat but prefer it in bottle so I have to 'suffer' through the tap version.
I like the food and actually have had some very good burgers there. The Elk is rather interesting as well. I tried the Italian beef sandwich and had more than I could handle. It was piled high with nicely peppered beef. Good stuff.

I live a couple hours from Nick's and used to go to school there. I still make it a couple times a year and I usually stop at Nick's while in town.
It's a neat looking place and is generally considered THE place to be. It's like Indiana's official pub.
The food is not gourmet by any means, but it won't put you in the hospital and isn't that expensive. The beer selection is ok, but I'm usually drunk by the time I'm there.
The wait staff is mediocre, but they're always crowded so it probably is tough to keep up with a bunch of drunks.
In my opinion the place is average at best, but it has a reputation that preceeds it.

Since my brother is going to college at Indiana our family felt it was only right that we take him to the official college bar. We stopped over here for lunch. Very nice in appearance and it definitely matches its namesake its a cozy little hangout to say the least. A bit early for booze but I did manage to take a look at their selection and its pretty good overall. On tap they carry Franziskaner Hefeweizen, Bass Pale Ale, Guinness, Newcastle Brown ale, New Belgium Brewery Fat Tire Amber ale, Bell's Two Hearted Ale, Blue Moon, and they have a few beers from upland brewery and Bloomington brewery which are local to the state. They also have your standard every macro brews and they have a few beers on bottle as well. Service was good overall and people were helpful. Food wasn't to bad, I had a local farm elk burger that was pretty good overall but I wasn't really impressed with the other food they offered. Prices were good overall and the atmosphere is really nice. But, I have to say that other than history and the appearance there wasn't anything that really made it special. Its still a good place to grab a bite and/or a drink with a fairly good selection just not a stellar hang out.

Not sure why Nick's gets a bad rap. I love this place. It's a place where families can go, so if you want to get your bump n grind on then bounce yourself down the road to sports. Nick's is a great place to start the night off with friends. Cheap beer and pizza with plenty of room upstairs to talk and meet-up. Sure, they are crazy at the door about ID's, but I don't want to hang with your underage ass so props to them actually checking your fake Michiagan license. Great place and great atmosphere.

Nicks is an IU "tradition" and certainly has the kitsch and photography on the walls to prove it.
The wait for help at the oft-understaffed bar is frequently too long to bear.
The beer selection is also limited to macros and a local microbrew or two (i.e. Upland).
Prices are average to overpriced, with limited specials, from what I have experienced--but hey, it's a college town.
This is certainly more of a party bar than anything else; and if that's what you're looking for, nothing in Bloomington beats a good old-fashioned game of Sink the Biz (If you can find a place to sit).

Honestly far from the best spot if you are really trying to have a BA outing. Beyond that Nick's is a landmark for a reason. It oozes IU. The food is pretty decent and the crowd is far better than the bars around it. Besides Yogi's it is probably the best place in the area to sit and have a pint. Granted the selection isn't huge, but an Upland Wheat will do in a pinch. On game nights, or any weekend get there early or expect to wait. I can remember waiting up to 15-20 minutes to get in the door. That said, it really isn't as packed as other bars in the area, which isn't saying anything at all.
