Shared at a home brew club meeting.

A - Pours copper with a 1 fingered white head. Dissipates immediately, which left no lacing. Not very good retention on this one.

S - Honey and caramel. No other smells came out of the bottle.

T - Honey and roasty caramel.

M - Full-bodied, malt dominated, and very viscous.

D - A really good beer, though not sure if this is a bock.

Pours a nice prominent lighter brown with a bit of amber. No head whatsoever. Aroma of medium roasted grain, slight fruit and noble hops. Beer seems authentic to taste but with the big flavor of a Bock, it's difficult for me to tell if there is adjunct or not. It starts lighter than expected finishing with a medium body but with a lingering aftertaste which is unpleasant to me but others may like it as I am not a big fan of the Bock.

Review from notes taken on 7/17/10. Thanks to BA smoked for sharing.

Poured into a pint, it appears a clear amber red color with a creamy tan head. Spotty amount of lace sticks to the glassware. Very sweet malty aroma with notes of raisin and plum. The taste has lots of malty sweetness tasting of dark fruits like indicated in the aroma and sugary sweetness like molasses. Medium feel with a modest amount of carbonation. It leaves a lingering flavor of dark caramelized malt in the mouth. No indication of hops in this brew and the alcohol is masked very well. The overall fruity sweetness hurts this brews drinkability but overall it isn't bad.

Appearance: minimal head, minimal carbonation, reddish/brown in color, clear

Smell: honey, sugar, tea, and grain

Taste: honey, tea, and toasted malt

Mouthfeel: sticky sweet, low carbonation, light body

Drinkability: Super drinkable and super sweet beer. This is borderline too sweet and I almost think of this as a dessert bock. I like the honey and tea taste. I could have several.

500ml bottle from Capital Market, Salem. Mahogany dense brown colouredtight bubbly, half inch tan head. Nice Gorgeous aromas choclate, dark sweet malt, coffee, very comforting for some reason. Flavours are similar to the aroma, but with a slight fruitiness, like sultanas. Palate lets the show down a bit, quite thin and fades out too fast in the finish Overall a nice dunkler bock, I really "dig" Polish beers for some reason..

A: deep dark brown with a tinge of red at the bottom and rim of the glass. Bubbles cling to the glass and are disappointed by the lack of froth, just as I am

S: stale malts with burnt brown sugar. A bit on the bashful side for a bock

T: wavering malt flavor and medicinal syrup type of sweetness. Very apprehensive malt profile, not burly enough! Leaves a dry, sweet, pucker in the mouth. I get a hint of toffee and raisins in the finish and slight wry bread flavor

M: body is mild to heavy, carbonation is good, and this bock is smooth with a creamy-type feel

D: ahh, what can I say. I gave it a try, not sure if I will purchase this one again

Very dark brown and murky, some reddish hues when held to the light. A brown head that isn't too big leaves plenty of lace.

A thick aroma of raisins or dark fruits (very much like molasses) and of dark, slightly roasted (porter-like) malt hits the nose. The smell is also fairly salty, almost like licorice.

Flavor starts off sweet and sticky and slightly cloying, followed by a dry, coffee-like flavor and then a pretty weak finish. The saltiness lingers for quite some time.

Together with the fullness of the body and the sticky texture, this beer has a bold mouthfeel.

A decent Bock, but pretty heavy on the sweetness and the mouthfeel.

S = There was a hint of fig and dark fruits.

T = Semi-sweet, malty flavor upfront. A small amount of fig appears near the finish. No hop bitterness to be found. The finish was non-existant. The sweet flavor starts out nice, but quickly ends with no lingering finish.

MF = Body was on the light side and carbonation was moderate. Crisp and very easy to drink.

Overall, this was an enjoyable and tasty bock. I enjoyed the sweetness, but unfortunately, the the finish takes away from the score on this one.

The Boss Kozlak from Bock poured a dark brown color with a small foam head and some sudsy lacing.

The aroma was pretty dead for the most part. Even as the brew warmed I didn't get much from it. The taste was a biscuity malt with a roasted caramel. In the mouth it was thin and didn't have much feel. Overall, very average and won't buy this one again.

Pours a rich reddish brown color with a nice head and slow lacing. The smell is of a wood cask, bourbon and molasses. Tastes of molasses with a slight dried fig note and a sweet finish. Shows characteristics of a double IPA as well as a resemblance to Sherry (the drink). Has a very nice smooth, velvety mouth feel and nice carbonation.

A clear, brown beer with thin head.

Smell is strong malty with a lot of dark flavors like cacoa, wood, fresh rope, liquorice and cappucino. Some fruity notes of the yeast. No real hop presence.

Taste is malty with a big caramel malt support, which dominated most of the beers taste. Lots of dark tastes with notes of light coffee and chocolate, followed by a muted fruitiness from the yeast. No hops. Body is sweet and sticky.

Pours a reddish-auburn shade into a stange-style glass. A brief head of foam forms, and is boosted by rapid, racing carbonation. Lace rings the inside narrow perimeter of the cylinder glass.

Sweet smell of spiced cookie, maybe a hint of plum or fig in there as well. Definitely bready, and earthy, like molasses.

Fairly mild mouthfeel, sweetness keeps me from taking bigger swigs. Dark bread, cookie, with some nuttiness. No bitterness, but there's a fruit presence like fig or black currant. Butterscotch and caramel linger behind after the finish. Light enough body, with a stickiness left on the lips.

This was a nice Polish Bock, and much more preferred over the brewery's Black Boss Porter.

Pours with a brilliantly clear, burnt amber color that is topped by a frothy, initially two-finger thick, tan colored head. The aroma is quite malt focused with notes of caramelized bread crust a touch of apple cider and some toasted grain notes.

The beer is quite sweet with a lingering saccharine note. Fairly light for a bock, but it still has a light heft to it. The sweetness really gets in the way of the other flavors, and the sweetness almost reminds me of sweet cider or even raisins, maybe even something like cloves. Touches of smokiness & even some toasted malt flavors are sometimes noticeable underneath the surface. There is something about this beer that reminds me of cola, or perhaps Dr. Pepper. Not a bad beer, it is just way too sweet, though not so much that it is not drinkable.

Pours a thick looking orangey brown with lots of yeast orbs undulating back and forth and up and down among the bubbles. A big fat inch-high head rises up and slooowly recedes back to leave a thick wall of lace around the insides of the glass with chunks breaking off and dropping into the liquid like chunks of ice calving off a glacier.

Rich aroma of raisins and dark brown sugar, molasses and tangy cherry, some charred apple bark.

Flavor is surprisingly tangy upfront with bitter apple and currant, but smokey and leathery at the same time. There's lots going on here, it's full of cocoa and talc, some toasted marshmallow and bourbon. Roasted malts weave in and out. I may be rating it too high for the style, but it's flavorful and intriguing and keeps me coming back for bigger and more frequent sips to pick out more nuances.

Mouthfeel is a little thin and watery, I'd like more body.

This one's not too typical of other bocks I've had, but it's a decent beer and is surely unique.

Dark brick red with bright tangerine highlights when held up to the indirect rays of the late afternoon sun. The pale gold cap is a good color match and has an appealing texture as well. It's also sticky enough to lay down quite a bit of thick lace. I'm impressed so far.

The nose is... bock-like. How's that for specifics? It's nicely toasted rather than roasted and features aromas of brown bread and bruised apples. It smells a bit earthy too, as if hops will contribute something of value on the palate.

My taste buds aren't as thrilled, sorry to say. I had hoped that this offering would be able to hang with Browar Witnica's Black Boss Porter in terms of quality, but it doesn't look like that's gonna happen. And it isn't just because I like Baltic porters more than I like bocks.

In terms of style, Boss Kozlak strikes me a tweener. That is, it's darker and richer than most bocks, yet isn't quite as dark and as rich as most doppelbocks. The flavor profile is tough to get a handle on. I'll go with dark caramel, raisins, cocoa and charred tobacco (that sounds so much better than ash). More malty sweetness is sorely needed and would cover up some of the musty, earthy hoppiness that I'm not really diggin'.

The mouthfeel is probably par for the 6% bock course, but I still think it could stand to be more full. More bubbles might also help to make things more lively in the mouth. I get the feeling that if I take my time over the rest of the bottle, the beer will be close to flat by the end.

I really wish the label had some sort of dating system, because I have a sneaking suspicion that this bottle of Boss Kozlak Bock Beer is past its prime (assuming, of course, that it had a prime). If you have a burning desire to drink your way through every bock brewed in Poland, by all means, give this one a go. Otherwise, there are better ways to spend your money.

Boss Kozlak pours a very dark, almost-black, deep-mahogany body with glowing chestnut highlights when held to the light. The creamy, yellowed-tan head drops shortly, but maintains a wide collar of thin but creamy foam that leaves thin walls of creamy lace about the glass. The nose displays its alcohol readily, but there's also some nice fruitiness and caramel present. In the mouth it's full bodied and creamy-smooth with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation that becomes creamier and more airy as it warms. The flavor offers lots of dark caramel and scorched brown sugar. It's sweetish, and there's obviously a good deal of adjunct in use as it's not that grainy. But it's balanced and nice, even well-rounded except for the note of alcohol. But it is a strong beer, right? It finishes dry with a light spritz of alcohol and some residual caramel and cocoa. Quite pleasing, rich and satiating.

I recently found a 50cl bottle of this beer at Belmont Station in Portland, OR. Enjoyed with dinner last night, a hearty portion of sausage and potato salad. Poured into a wide-mouthed 'Chimay' goblet.

A: Murky dark brown with a miniscule white head, which quickly reduced to a weak film. Some tiny carbonation bubbles gurgle at the edges.

S: Enticing sweet smell of caramel, molasses and lots of toasted dark bread. Some ripe fruit (plum, cherry). Fairly high level of spiciness, too - mostly anise (licorice). A hint of lactic sourness?

T: Intense flavors of dense smoke, sweet caramel, nuts, brown sugar, licorice and cocoa. Very little in this beer to make it bitter - the sweetness overrules. Has many similarities to Boss Porter and other Baltic-styled beers in this regard.

M: A little thin with a sort of oily slickness. Not unpleasant, just seems a bit weak. The carbonation level makes for a tingly mouthfeel, like a soda. Finish is mostly sweet and mouthfeel and body are both middle-of-the-road.

D: I pondered this one before giving a '4.0'...not a bad beer at all. Has some delicious characteristics and pairs nicely with food. However, I considered stopping after about 25cl (~8 oz.) and finishing the rest later. Quite good in small quantities, but a little too sweet for me to drink a whole bottle in one sitting (I DID finish it however...).

Look for a bottle...I recommend a try.
