A: The beer is jet black in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation near the edges of the glass. It poured with a half finger high light beige head that slowly died down and left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and a large collar around the edge of the glass.
S: There are moderately strong aromas of dark fruits in the nose along with some hints of licorice.
T: Flavors of dark fruits, dark malts and a bit of sweetness are present in the taste, which also has some subtle hints of smoke in the finish (these become a bit stronger as the beer fully warms up).
M: It feels a bit higher than medium-bodied and a little smooth on the palate with a low to moderate amount of carbonation.
O: While this beer has a high alcohol content, it's not too difficult to drink because the alcohol is relatively well masked from the taste. It seems to resemble more of a Belgian Strong Dark Ale or a quadruple instead of a stout.

I had this on-tap at Max's during Baltimore Beer Week. Served in a tasting glass.

Appearance: The beer pours a reddish dark brown color with a layer of off white head on top of the pour. The head fades to a small ring around the pour.

Smell: The overall smell is rather mild. I'm getting some smokey notes with a slightly sweet dark fruit note, but overall I would say it's a bit boring.

Taste: The flavor is more interesting than the smell. Smokey roasted malt is the dominant flavor. I'm getting a sweetness that reminds me of dark fruit. There is a very mild fruity note in the mix as well. The finish is smokey and bitter.

Mouthfeel: The body is just on the thicker side of medium with fluffy head and a finish that is a bit dry.

Overall: This isn't a super imperial stout, but it was interesting enough. The smoke was nice and the overall beer was smooth. The abv is well hidden.

On tap at Max's the other day.

The beer pours a blackish brown color with good head retention and lacing. Don't get a whole lot on the nose initially, just some light rootbeer, licorice and vanilla. As it warmed, I got a smoked meat aroma as well, making for one unusual smelling (but not unattractive) beer. On the palate, this beer is just flat out odd (at least for a stout). The flavor profile replicates the nose, with the rootbeer and licorice dominating. There's also some hoppy bitterness in the finish, which helps to balance the sweet licorice flavor in this beer. Sorry, but this combination of flavors is just not what I'm looking for in an IRS. Mouthfeel is medium bodied to full, even though it also comes across as a bit thin on the palate as well. Alcohol is well integrated into the flavor profile (especially for a 10% abv. beer), and I have to say that this beer carries it's alcohol pretty well.

A decent enough beer, but just not what I want when I'm in the mood for an imperial stout.

Pours a black color. 3/4 inch head of an off-tan color. Good retention and great lacing. Smells of alcohol, roasted malt, sweet malt, smoke, and a hint of syrup. Fits the style of an American Double / Imperial Stout. Mouth feel is smooth and clean, with a low carbonation level. Tastes of sweet malt, roasted malt, hops, alcohol, hint of pine, and slight smoke. Overall, good aroma, feel, body, and blend.

11.2 oz bottle. Pours black bodied with a big tan head that's a little on the sudsy side. Retention is low and there's very little lacing to speak of. The aroma isn't particularly big or appealing; I get fumy booze, unsweetened baker's chocolate, a bit of smoky, charred malt. There's something a little harsh and chalky here, and unfortunately it continues in the taste.

The body is medium at best, too thin for the style and to support this blend of assertive, unpleasant flavors. Chalky bitter chocolate, booze, anise, burnt wood notes that linger a bit on the palate; next to no sweetness that could round the flavor off and smooth out the harsh edges.

Needless to say I wasn't a fan of this beer. Not enjoyable to drink and a disappointment when I am usually quite fond of both big stouts and smoked beers. There's little of the meaty smoked malt character one might expect and instead has a wet cigarette butt and burnt wood and paper flavor. Not very good, I'm afraid.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a brown color and a mostly cloudy consistency. There was a big, tan-colored, creamy, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A pretty good aroma of malt, chocolate, and hints of coffee.

T: Tasted of roasted malt, cocoa, a little bit of coffee, and a tinge of hops in the finish. Slightly boozy, but not enough to worry about. A decent enough flavor, but not quite balanced enough.

M: A well-carbonated beer with a sharp, prickly finish. Medium-bodied.

O: Kind of a mixed bag here. Smoking Gun is an uneven beer with some good qualities that doesn't quite make it. Nonetheless, it is drinkable.

Poured into an Elysian snifter. Pours a very dark brown, appearing black in the glass. A half finger light brown head with good retention and lacing. Aroma of dark and light estery fruit, toasted malt, light licorice and chocolate. Flavor follows with very nice dark dried, stone and light fruit well integrated with toasted malt, hints of licorice and wood. Sadly very little smokiness. Medium bodied. I would have hoped from some charred gunpowder from a Smoking Gun, but am still very pleased with the interesting flavors in this. Well balanced and well covered ABV. I hope I can find another bottle of this, I will buy it again in a heart beat.

A - Dark black with a touch of brown, finger of frothy khaki head. Fades fairly slowly.

S - Roasted chocolate malts, vanilla, smoke, coffee, dark fruits, oak, black licorice, a bit of booze.

T - Roasted dark chocolate malts, dark fruits, smoke, vanilla, coffee, black licorice, some earthy hops, a bit of oak, and some booze.

M - Medium-full bodied moderate carbonation. Smooth and a bit thick, smokey, sweet, and warming finish.

D - Nice balanced smoked stout. Big and bold but everything works nicely.

Picked up at Salud Bottle shop.
A very dark brown, there was some light that could get through around the edges. Rocky off white head, retained quite well.

Aroma, a lot of chocolate, some acidic roast. Maybe some vinuous fruit in there.

Taste, mild roast up front with some nice chocolate. A little kahlhua, and some off metallic notes in the middle. Improves with cocoa and a stronger coffee in the finish. More smoke comes out middle through end as it warms, and that weird metallic note goes away a little.

A little lighter body for the size. Maybe a tad high carb, which I don't care for but on par with others from the region for some reason. Even with the kahlhua note there is little alcohol presence. Pretty good, not overly pricey. Worth a try.

11.2 fl oz poured into a Flying Dog chalice. no bottled on date. labeled as a "smoked black saison" however doesn't state that anywhere on the bottle.

A: very dark brown. head is closer to the white side than I anticipated. retention is lacking. as is the lacing.

S: the roast is a little worn out in my opinion. slightly smoky. some soft chocolate aroma as well.

T: a certain amount of char starts things off sweet. smoky as well, but not as much as I expected/hoped for. definitely some vanilla aspects. finish has a lingering burnt flavor to it.

M: very mild carbonation. full bodied.

D: meh, not as impressed as I wanted to be. the smoke aspect was not as strong as I would have liked, and the stout body on its own did not make up for it. glad I got to try, however get's a pass in my book.
