Pours an incredibly cloudy brownish amber with glistening maroon hues and topped with a small, pillowy, off-white head; retention is short, reducing to a thick collar; a great deal of yeasty sediment floats around for a bit before settling.
Aromas of fig, raisin, plum skin, smoked toffee, sticky caramel, faint booze, and dark fruits; builds to a subtle, semi-sweet finish.
Taste brings a nice harmony of raisin, fig, and plum to start, with subtle clove and banana esters in the background; herbal and very woody, along with hints of sweet caramel on the finish.
Mouthfeel holds a light-medium body with noticeable but unobtrusive carbonation; almost heavy bits of toasty yeast verge on robustness and add some weight to the palate for a short time; somewhat watery, just faint enough to show and hold this back from being more well-rounded.
A solid quad showing the beginning stages of complexity expected from a heavy-hitter, but too inconsistent throughout to create any balance, ultimately holding it to the ‘solidly drinkable, but nothing too special’ territory.
