I stopped in here while waiting for a table at Sunset, next door. (I believe this happens a lot!) It has a cool "city" feel while still being comfortable. I sat at the bar, and I did not order any food. However, it smelled delicious from those sitting around me and I didn't hear any complaints from any one! They had quite a few beers on tap, including my pumpkin seasonals and Jinx from Magic Hat (currently still somewhat hard to find). Bartenders were friendly - it was hard to determine their knowledgeability since I went in knowing what I wanted. Still, I was impressed with the variety of choices on tap. When you sit at the bar you can see all the taps, too, which I like! The bar runs some good deals, such as Pizza, Pool, and Pitchers, a $20 charge for all three on Sundays, Mondays, and Tuesdays. If I'm ever in town on one of those nights, I would certainly consider it!

to echo a common sentiment of Big City, it's a decent plan B option when Sunset is at capacity - which was exactly the case last night. considering sunset was 3 deep at the bar we were surprised to find seats upstairs at big city. beer selection is decent - nothing compared to sunset, but then, what is? while you lack the prolific menu sunset boasts, many major styles are represented so there is probably something that will suffice. had a harpoon leviathan DIPA and triticus and a sculpin. service is decent, and there are also pool tables if one is so inclined. all in all a decent place but not one i'd trip over myself trying to get back to.

Big City is the alternative to the overcrowdedness at Sunset, downstairs.
Although it's quite similar, I'm growing quite sick of Big City. The area is huge, but in actuality, the capacity is probably half that of Sunset when accounting for the pool tables. You can't reasonably expect patrons to stand and drink between pool tables. There's usually only about a dozen or so tables, and the side room often has one or more birthday parties.
The beer list...well, after you've been to Sunset or if you were expecting the Sunset menu, you won't find it here. Unfortunately, although the menu is extensive for your run-of-the-mill bar, it doesn't hold a candle to Sunset. Only a fraction of the beers are even on tap!
Big City is a nice place with good beer, but it happens to suffer from a relativity complex. It is right upstairs from probably the most extensive beer bar in all of Boston, so it will always pale in comparison. Unfortunate, but true.

Having left the Boston area before I was 21, I really knew nothing about this place until this past weekend.
While I was visiting some friends in Brighton, the plan was to go to a couple bars for the evening and after a 20 minute walk we showed up here. The name sounded familiar to me, probably from this site, but I was skeptical going in whether or not it really was a beer bar like the sign in the window claims.
Well one look around when we got upstairs rejected any skepticism I had. I was truly surprised to see the tap selection, and the fact that this group of friends would be going here. Unfortunately they only wanted to stay for one drink there, but the Allagash White I had was truly exceptional, and at a reasonable price.
The biggest downside was the number of empty taps at the bar. Clearly there was room for much more, but for whatever reason, they were not full. Obviously they will never all be full because it would be impossible to keep everything fresh, but I think there could be more.

Big City is a good alternative if Sunset is too busy. I have been there a number of times, including for brunch today. Never felt compelled to complain about the service; it's just a little bit slow. No biggie. Lots of fun if you like pool. Although there is one table that is pretty unbalanced, all of the others I've used have been fine.
I do wish their beer selection was a little bigger. Why have 80 taps if you're only going to use 40-50 of them?
The current Hop Head flight is pretty good: Harpoon IPA, Bear Republic Racer 5, Dogfish Head 90 Min., and Southern Tier Oak-Aged Unearthly.

Pool hall first beer bar second. Big City and Sunset have horrible hours, meaning they need to be open one more hour until 2. However, beer selection is good much smaller than sunset. Only got food once and I was not impressed. crowd is a mix of yuppie to college crowd depends on whether or not colleges are back in session or not.
Service was fine not the fastest or most beer knowledgeable staff however all orders were correct with a group of 7.
good for pool beers okay better beer bars around.

Tried this place as we waited for a table at the Sunset Grill. Lots of pool tables and foosball tables. Good beer selection, had a Brooklyn Lager on tap, didn't stare at the rest of the menu, but it seemed very good.
It was cool, the a/c was working well which I like.
Long story short, I wished we had stayed here and not gone to the Sunset grill. where we had a not so good meal and was CROWDED. Plus there is really no place to sit and have a beer at the sunset grill without eating. The beer menu is too big.
We liked Big City.

Youre much better off just going to sunset, the only thing that saves this place really is the pool and a few good beers. Quality is definetly not as good as sunset; most of the beers are poured right to the brim of the glass with no head. Also sometimes they'll give you a beer in a plastic cup, which is fine for the bud and stuff, but not great divide hercules ipa. Service isnt bad waitresses come aroudn while youre playin pool and ask if you want another drink. Selection doesnt compare to sunset. I think this place would definetly be better if they cut down some of the taps and just concentrated on a few really good session beers. They are often out of what you want too. Not a bad place to play some pool and have some beers, but really could be much better than it is.

I know a bar that won't see me again. There are just too many ~good~ bars (downstairs is Sunset, same owner, different vibe, too bad).
I was struck at the weird layout of the place at first, then just shrugged off the multi-room, pool hall thing they had going on and decided to sit at the bar.
Overly perfumed ladies and macho "ya doods" were my company and I just didn't have a good time. It took about 10 minutes to get my beer and, although the beer was delicious, I didn't have another. I went downstairs to Sunset.

This is the shittiest bar I've ever been to expecting something good. They claim to have 80 beers (fine print: 40-80 beers) and these include lots of American light lagers (Coors Lite et al) and other crappy macros. The place was like a frat house inside--puke all over the bathroom and I was honestly concerned about the cleanliness of the sofa we were sitting on (and I'm usually quite comfortable with things like that). Ther service was okay and the waitress was nice. She didn't come by frequently, but the place was crowded (also a drawback) and I don't think it was her fault. Still, not only did our waitress not know anything about beer--neither did the bartender! The food was completely bland at best and plain bad at worst, and it was overpriced. As were the beers. As I've found is typical of shitty frat bars, the prices were outrageous. Had we not been there for a friend's birthday, I would have left immediately upon walking in. By far the worst bar I've ever had the displeasure of being in. I wouldn't wish a night in this place on my worst enemy.
