Notes/Commercial Description:
Rich, Smooth, and Tasteful. Yes George Clooney is a good actor, but we're speaking, of course, about our Black Silk Stout! With a smooth texture and aroma of roast coffee and cocoa, this fine OATMEAL STOUT is just waiting for the lads to toast a pint, or to end the evening as a dessert beer or velvety nightcap. Perfect on cold New England nights, so stop in and kick your legs up on a warm barstool while you "sip the silk."

I enjoyed this beer on my second trip to City Steam. As I perused the beer selections, I noticed an oatmeal stout and my mind was made up quickly!

As my beer was served, I noted that it was a deep, deep brown color with tan/creamy colored head. It smelled of chocolate and oatmeal (appropriate, being that it WAS an oatmeal stout) - sweet and delicious.

The taste was also sweet but with just that hint of bitter that balances the beer perfectly. This was a smooth and filling beer. It went down nicely, leaving me eager for the next sip! It was so smooth that I barely noticed how quickly and easily it went down.

Overall, I was very pleased with this local brew and will have it again on my next trip to City Steam.

On tap at the source.
Comes to the table a solid black with a small tan head that seems perpetual. Smells of caramel coffee and a hint of chocolate. Little if any hop is present in the aroma. The flavor is roasty with coffee and burnt sugar with just a hint of chocolate and a light fruity tartness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Good stout, but lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. Needs a bit more creaminess in the mouthfeel for an oatmeal stout too.

Served on-tap in a nonic pint glass at City Steam Brew-Ha-Ha in Hartford, Conn.

A: Black in color with a two-finger head of ivory foam which retained fairly well and left a bit of weak, soapy lace on the glass.

S: Sweet and hearty like a bowl of oatmeal with hints of toffee, chocolate and caramel malt. A faint, herbal hop essence spices up the nose.

T: Very smooth and sweet, milky oat malt flavor backed with subtle chocolate and vanilla notes. A grassy, licorice and mild tobacco leaf hop bitterness cuts the sweetness a bit and leaves the palate silky with a touch of bittersweetness.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth and very drinkable, this stout goes down incredibly well-balanced.

O: A sessionable, sweet American stout that captures the hearty essence of oatmeal and brings in some dessert-like qualities with the chocolate and lactose elements. Well-balanced and highly drinkable at 5.25% ABV, Black Silk Stout is just as enjoyable on its own as it is with a creamy dessert.

L: Pours a nice dark black with a thick and fluffy tan colored head that laces the glass all the way down.
S: Smells of sweet roasted malts, nice oatmeal aroma, mixed with a hint of chocolate, coffee, and caramel.
T: Tastes of sweet toasted and roasted malts, a nice silky oatmeal taste, followed up with hints of chocolate, coffee, and caramel to end it.
M: Extremely smooth, rich tasting, but not too heavy or boozy. Perfect amount of carbonation.
D: Overall this was a really nice beer with a great feel and flavor mixtures, well worth a try.

On tap. Pours a basically black color with a thin frothy head. Some lacing. Aromas of vanilla, molasses, mocha, and some hops. Flavors of more vanilla, light coffee and somewhat bitter. Kind of a light mouthfeel but a bit creamy. Decent offering but nothing special here.

On tap at City Steam on 3/3/10.

A - Appeared a very blackish dark brown with deep garnet and ruby hues around the edges and a finger's worth of frothy tan head on top that produced quite a bit of sticky doilies around the glass.

S - Roasted malt with an apparent coffee presence and some sweet chocolate notes. There is also a hint of nutty oils, which impart a slight astringent character.

T - Medium coffee roast provides a dry bitterness and works nicely with the chocolate sweetness. Some earthy bitterness works its way into the mix, while the middle ground is dominated by a hazelnut character.

M - Medium bodied and robust with a slight chewy texture and moderate carbonation resulting in slight prickle on the tongue. Finish is slightly dry and bitter on the palate.

D - Very good example of the style with equal parts roast, bitterness and chocolate sweetness with a prevalent nutty quality. This was a nice first impression on this brewery.

A: Pours very dark with about a finger of off-white that demonstrates poor retention. Some foamy lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Coffee and cream mixed with a lot of chocolate and coco powder. mmmm.

T: Much different from the nose; it's not really sweet at all. Bitter espresso and baker's chocolate are the two dominate flavors here. The finish is very bitter, almost as if too many bittering hops were used. Or perhaps way too much black patent malt.

M: Lots of carbonation, but a pretty smooth medium body nonetheless.

D: The flavor of this one lacked complexity and was way too bitter for me. Their ingredients list for this one needs to be reevaluated IMHO. If they could bring some of the sweeter aromas this brew has (and move some of the bitterness to the background) into the taste this would be a much better brew.

Reviewed on 9/30/08. On tap at City Steam. Pours a dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt. Flavor of coffee, roasted nuts, roasted malt. Very light bodied, almost like a Schwartzbier. Nice and pretty tasty. Definitely must be a new batch/recipe because I don't understand why the beer I had would get such low scores.

Served on tap, poured in a 12 oz. glass.

Appearance--Very rich, deep brown, almost black color. Tan frothy head.

Smell--Deep malty aromas of cocoa and faint coffee flavors. Quite nice.

Taste/Mouthfeel--Smooth going down, not overly carbonated. I was quite impressed with the taste, very rich and complex. Toasted malts dominate but don't overpower. Yum.

Drinkability--Next time I'm there I'll likely pick up a growler to enjoy at home.

Inky black with a low and foamy brown head, that leaves fine lacing down the glass. Smell is dark roasty malt with hints of cocoa and caramel. Mouthfeel is a bit tingly and thin. I expected it to be fuller and richer. Flavor is rich and intense with hints of burnt coffee, brown sugar, molasses, and cocoa. Flavor seems to be focused on the upfront, with little in the finish and aftertaste.
