Notes/Commercial Description:
Rich, Smooth, and Tasteful. Yes George Clooney is a good actor, but we're speaking, of course, about our Black Silk Stout! With a smooth texture and aroma of roast coffee and cocoa, this fine OATMEAL STOUT is just waiting for the lads to toast a pint, or to end the evening as a dessert beer or velvety nightcap. Perfect on cold New England nights, so stop in and kick your legs up on a warm barstool while you "sip the silk."

I enjoyed this beer on my second trip to City Steam. As I perused the beer selections, I noticed an oatmeal stout and my mind was made up quickly!

As my beer was served, I noted that it was a deep, deep brown color with tan/creamy colored head. It smelled of chocolate and oatmeal (appropriate, being that it WAS an oatmeal stout) - sweet and delicious.

The taste was also sweet but with just that hint of bitter that balances the beer perfectly. This was a smooth and filling beer. It went down nicely, leaving me eager for the next sip! It was so smooth that I barely noticed how quickly and easily it went down.

Overall, I was very pleased with this local brew and will have it again on my next trip to City Steam.

Inky black with a low and foamy brown head, that leaves fine lacing down the glass. Smell is dark roasty malt with hints of cocoa and caramel. Mouthfeel is a bit tingly and thin. I expected it to be fuller and richer. Flavor is rich and intense with hints of burnt coffee, brown sugar, molasses, and cocoa. Flavor seems to be focused on the upfront, with little in the finish and aftertaste.

On tap. Pours a basically black color with a thin frothy head. Some lacing. Aromas of vanilla, molasses, mocha, and some hops. Flavors of more vanilla, light coffee and somewhat bitter. Kind of a light mouthfeel but a bit creamy. Decent offering but nothing special here.

On tap at the source.
Comes to the table a solid black with a small tan head that seems perpetual. Smells of caramel coffee and a hint of chocolate. Little if any hop is present in the aroma. The flavor is roasty with coffee and burnt sugar with just a hint of chocolate and a light fruity tartness. Medium body with a moderate level of carbonation and a slick sweet mouthfeel. Good stout, but lacking something that I can't quite put my finger on. Needs a bit more creaminess in the mouthfeel for an oatmeal stout too.

A: Pours very dark with about a finger of off-white that demonstrates poor retention. Some foamy lacing on the sides of the glass.

S: Coffee and cream mixed with a lot of chocolate and coco powder. mmmm.

T: Much different from the nose; it's not really sweet at all. Bitter espresso and baker's chocolate are the two dominate flavors here. The finish is very bitter, almost as if too many bittering hops were used. Or perhaps way too much black patent malt.

M: Lots of carbonation, but a pretty smooth medium body nonetheless.

D: The flavor of this one lacked complexity and was way too bitter for me. Their ingredients list for this one needs to be reevaluated IMHO. If they could bring some of the sweeter aromas this brew has (and move some of the bitterness to the background) into the taste this would be a much better brew.

Served on tap, poured in a 12 oz. glass.

Appearance--Very rich, deep brown, almost black color. Tan frothy head.

Smell--Deep malty aromas of cocoa and faint coffee flavors. Quite nice.

Taste/Mouthfeel--Smooth going down, not overly carbonated. I was quite impressed with the taste, very rich and complex. Toasted malts dominate but don't overpower. Yum.

Drinkability--Next time I'm there I'll likely pick up a growler to enjoy at home.

No, this isn't the best stout I've ever had, nor is it the ideal representation of the oatmeal stout style. It is a good beer, though. I'd certainly be happy to drink this regularly.

A couple of notes about what doesn't work for me. First off, it's a little too carbonated. I've had other stouts where the carbonation is a tad bright. It comes across as unpolished to me. A stout, particularly an oatmeal, really should be smoother IMO.

That said, the aroma is dynamite coming fresh off the tap, clean and chocolatey without being too cloying. Flavor is very good, not too sweet, just the right mix of malt and yeast, chocolate and hop.

So yeah, not a bad entry from City Steam.

Served on-tap in a nonic pint glass at City Steam Brew-Ha-Ha in Hartford, Conn.

A: Black in color with a two-finger head of ivory foam which retained fairly well and left a bit of weak, soapy lace on the glass.

S: Sweet and hearty like a bowl of oatmeal with hints of toffee, chocolate and caramel malt. A faint, herbal hop essence spices up the nose.

T: Very smooth and sweet, milky oat malt flavor backed with subtle chocolate and vanilla notes. A grassy, licorice and mild tobacco leaf hop bitterness cuts the sweetness a bit and leaves the palate silky with a touch of bittersweetness.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth and very drinkable, this stout goes down incredibly well-balanced.

O: A sessionable, sweet American stout that captures the hearty essence of oatmeal and brings in some dessert-like qualities with the chocolate and lactose elements. Well-balanced and highly drinkable at 5.25% ABV, Black Silk Stout is just as enjoyable on its own as it is with a creamy dessert.

Reviewed on 9/30/08. On tap at City Steam. Pours a dark brown with a thick tan head. Aroma of sweet roasted malt. Flavor of coffee, roasted nuts, roasted malt. Very light bodied, almost like a Schwartzbier. Nice and pretty tasty. Definitely must be a new batch/recipe because I don't understand why the beer I had would get such low scores.
