A dark brown beer with almost no head.
The smell is birch smoked malt. A grainy, malty and fatty smell. The bottom fermented character gives way to the smoke. The smoke is not ashy, but fresh and woody.
The taste is light, every sip, the smoke grows on me and the beer tastes different at each sip. There is fresh birch wood, tobacco and malt. The yeast character is nice and gives the impression of some esters, which are slightly fruity.

Dark amber colour, hazy, medium thick head, quick to disappear but some lacing was retained. Aroma was smoked malts, smoke there but not overbearing. Tasted hints of rasperry and oak, sweeter than other smoked beers, malty, smoke present but understated. Slightly thick body, not much carbonation, smooth texture. Enjoyed it, smoked beers are best when not overly smokey like this one.

Served in the Castle Hotel Burg Veldenstein, Neuhaus Pegnitz, Franconia which acts as a tap house for the Veldenstein/Kaiser Brau range.
Served in a stone/porcalain tankard so difficult to fully appreciate the colour but appeared a mid copper brown, not too dark, not as dark as other Rauchbiers I've had
Lightly smoked rauch, nowhere near as intense as the well known Schlenkerla range
Other flavours peeping through past the smoking were oaky/wood and toffee

Drinkable and modestly smoked amber lager.
Not a dark Rauchbier, but a chestnut brown that is very attractive. Average mouthfeel with a light body and somewhat watery taste. Distinctive smoked flavor that is not too heavy or overpowering. Malt taste comes through. Seems to be fairly hoppy though some bitterness must be from the smoke. Fairly sharp taste and a bit astringent.
A bit more sweetness or heavier malt would make a sensational beer, but the smokiness is restrained enough to allow other flavors to emerge.

With a moderate strengthen pour, this Rauchbier produces three fingers of tan head, and has a cloudy copper colored body.
The aroma is smoky, but not as dominant as expected. Sweet malts of caramel are notable too.
In the taste, the smoke dominates. Slight hints of toasted breads come up from behind.
The mouth feel is a little coarse, and I'd say sandy. In the middle there is a slight oiliness.
Overall a good rauchbier, but far from the best.

The beer is not listed on the breweries website and I'm not sure about the availability. I didn't want to get anyones hopes up so I chose rotating release so as not to assume a specific period of availability.
Froathy light-cream colored head left a few bubbles of lace. Full on malt beer Smokey aroma reminds me of my shirt after a night around the campfire that was soaked in a Doppelbock. Caramel, chocolate, and lightly sweet dark malt in the beginning. A nice dose of smokey flavor kicks in towards the finish and rounds out the beer. Soft and full mouthfeel. Great balance between malt flavors and smoke. Addictively drinkable. On the mild side for the style without being weak. I would recommend this for anyone looking to get into this style.
