Poured from the bomber into a snifter. I believe this beer has now had 2 months to age since its arrival at my Trader Joe's.

Starts with a dark brown body with slow, steady carbonation visible. The head is two fingers thick and frothy, persists well, and eventually settles into a thick layer of lace over the body.

Aromas of sweet dark malt and molasses and brown sugar are prominent on the nose, as are some fruity esthers that remind me of a Dubbel. I want to say there's some chocolate lurking underneath as well. I detect some booze, but it's not overbearing.

Lots of rich maltiness in this beer, with some date, fig and plum flavors. There's even a candy like flavor I'd associate with a Belgian, which all make me wonder if this beer is in fact a Belgian-style beer. It tastes very much like one. With continued sips, chocolatey flavors begin to emerge, as do a hint of hops.

While the label suggests this beer is an Imperial Brown Ale, I find that much about it is truly Belgian and thus falls in the category of some Belgian beer. It's highly effervescent, creamy and sweet from the heavy malt profile, and the hops are hardly evident in taste or feel. I do get some dry bitterness at the finish, but my mind was intent on attributing this to the heat.

I could use a little least booziness, but otherwise I'm very happy with this beer. It's tasty, diverse in flavors and sensations, and above all, CHEAP. I'll buy a couple more to age.

First, this offering is quite a departure from years past, which have been somewhat similar in nature. I would call this more of a Imperial Red Bitter than an Imperial Brown ale. That said all of the years in my experience have improved after 6+ months of cellar time and I suspect this years offering will improve as well! It is good fresh... slightly hoppy and yeasty on the nose. Quite a hop presense and bitterness on first sip settling down to a more balanced malt sweetness with hoppy aftertaste. The bitterness is always in the background in a good way. I am a fan of english bitters so this is right up my alley. It is a sipper for sure not because of the abv but because it does have a robust complexity that really needs to be savored to be fully enjoyed. The flavors really come out as it warms up. I am really looking forward to trying these in 6 months and 1 year!

Poured from a 650mL bottle into a snifter. No freshness date. 2014 edition.

Presentation: Pitch dark brown body. Has a minor amber glow when held up to light. A fairly short light tan head forms and collapses quickly. Decent amount of lacing throughout.

Smell: Sweet dark fruits (pears and plums). Toasted grains. Caramel.

Taste: Roasted malts up front. Caramel. The hops are sweet and tangy, nearing a bit metallic when the alcohol kicks in.

Mouthfeel: Moderate carbonation. Not quite a full body but certainly is best enjoyed as a slow sipper.

Overall: The bottle calls this brew an "Imperial Brown Ale". Whatever you call it, it is not the worst. It does not compete well with the big dawgs of the strong ales but it is hard to ask for a better brew for such an affordable price.

Poured from a 22oz bomber purchased at Trader Joes in SE Portland

A> Mission Street's 2014 Anniversary Ale pours out dark with a small head that has decent retention. Held to the light this beer illuminates a beautiful ruby red and has a bit of a haze. Pretty good looking beer.

S> Really muted aroma, what little that does come across to my nose is sweet malt with butterscotch and a hint of cocoa.

T> A lot of flavor here, but it's a bit jumbled. The malt plays the starring role in this brew, and it comes across as sweet and toasty with the strong butterscotch flavor and hits of cocoa and coffee. The hops hit at the front, mostly grassy/earthy flavors, that help balance the sweetness of the malt. The toastiness of the malts shines through on the finish which also helps balance the sweetness of this brew.

M> A little thin and overcarbonated, given this is an "Imperial Brown Ale" I expected a little more heft.

O> Mission Street's 2014 Anniversary Ale is not a great beer, but it's alright at it's price ($2.99/bomber). This reminds me of a slightly inferior version of AVBC's Winter Solstice Ale.
