Picked an "orphan" single up from Trader Joe's. I know I've had this before but really didn't remember, so went for another.

It had very little head on its apple juice color body. A roasted malt aroma - very subtle. The taste was just plain average. Nothing terrible, nothing memorable. My score says average. Average beers are not good enough. I won't be buying this again.

Unfortunately picked up a bottle that is 11 months old at TJs. Usually look at date stamp. Despite that, this is not a bad PA and I imagine fresh it is pretty good value. Aroma: other than some oxidation which translates to a stale aroma, there are is mild bready sweetness from the malts, and a subtle earthy hop aroma as well Appearance: Pours a hazy medium amber similar to say a Sierra PA. the head is minimal as is its retention and lacing almost non existent. Taste: very nice balance between the malts and the earthy hops and their bitterness. Palate: medium body, with semi rich texture, moderate carbonation and minimal astringency. Finishes short and dry with a faint but lingering astringency on the palate

A Trader Joe's beer. Golden color, 1/2" white head. Aroma is muted.

Taste is a real mild excursion, has some similarities to SNPA the milder draught version, but like an even milder version of that, less crystal/caramel malt, less Cascade hops. Certainly freshness can impact that, who knows on these.

At the end of the day, its a relatively easy to drink pale ale that can serve as a nice gateway or cool foray when you don't want to drink something overly complex.

An initial citrus and hops crispness has a Summer-time refreshingness. But with a bitter end. This is a "house brand" at Trader Joe's and its actual brewing is done by "contract brewers". Recently switched to a session pale ale. Bottled 8/19/15. This reminds me of Firestone Walker's Easy Jack with a bit less variety of hops and additional honey malt, fantastic. Cheap and awesome.

(Copied from RB) I like this beer, as it is clearly smooth and has plenty of flavor. However, when trying it side-by-side with the Mission Street IPA, this one lacks the flavor punch I look for in an ale. Still, a good beer.

This one's in a stubby bottle.

A : Hazy yellow glow about 70% opaque. The head is rather small for a pale ale but still appreciable. It's about 1 finger and fluffy leaving light hills of lace as it recedes.

S : Some actually interesting aromas going on here. Angel food cake, strawberries, and then some creamed corn and raisin. Some orange peel, too. A bit of a vegetal snap pea aroma also can be nosed. Garlic bread? Onion? Fuck this is a wonderfully dense profile.

T : Actually very tasty. The veggie and fruit flavors come together nicely under a malty body with a nice balance of hop. I keep thinking Hu-Hot or something, like fried vegetables in soy. There's a fry-pan quality to it. And then there's typical orange pith flavor and pale malt going on, too. Snow pea, dude. Yeah, it's weird. But totally drinkable.

F : Light bodied, very electric carbonation, and a faint creaminess. Not much to write about.

O : Am I on this category already? Damn. I wish there was more to say. I'd have it again. It's a nice sessionable pale ale and it's got some weird oriental shit going on here. Have I had too many?

Bottle dated 7/24/15. Now labeled "Mission St. Session Pale Ale" and brewed by (supposedly defunct, according to BA) Four + Brewing in Salt Lake City, UT. 4.7% ABV.

Look: light orange-brown with a nice sudsy light tan head that persists for quite a while.

Smell: very mild. A bit of sweetness and citrus, and some bready malt.

Taste: lots of biscuit malt, with some grassy/citrusy hops. Reminds me a bit of FW's DBA. And oddly, something that reads as alcohol, despite low ABV.

Feel: surprisingly medium bodied. Smooth with a clean finish. Definite high point of the beer.

Overall: nothing amazing, but a tasty enough beer. Completely inoffensive, and with some downright enjoyable elements. And at $7/6-pack, a great value, as expected.

Trying Trader Joes Mission Street Session Pale Ale. The sign at trader joes said hint of malt and citrus flavor. The alcohol is session at 4.7%. There is a light color, small head and no citrus like "Go To IPA" session ale by Stone. Not my cup of tea as I love the over the top citrus of "Go To IPA" even though it is more expensive than this off brand. If you like malt and are not looking for that grapefruit, citrus flavor, for the cost, you might like, but if you crave those flavors, this session ale is not for you.

For a value six pack this is a really good beer. It's also only 4.6 % and better than most other "session" IPAs. FYI, the "Mission St." label beers are brewed by Firestone Walker for Trader Joe's.

Steinhaus Brewing Co. "Mission St. Pale Ale"
12 oz. brown glass bottle, dated "03/14/15" without explanation ("best by", "bottle on")
$1.34 @ Trader Joe's #766, Tampa, FL

Mission St. Pale Ale is a classic American pale ale that's not overdone in any way. It's clearly a Sierra Nevada clone, and they've done a good job with it. The appearance is good, holding a fluffy cap of white over its deep golden body, and leaving nice streaks and smears of lace behind. The aroma offers soft citrus and pine over a delicately biscuity malt base. The flavor combines the hops and malt almost seamlessly, and it's perfectly balanced by a very firm bitterness that allows it to finish dry and lingering with note of citrus and pine.

Well brewed and very nicely done. Given the price it's hard to pass up.
